We deciced to go on a fairly quiet, cheapish holiday on an all inclusive basis, and that is what we got. For the price this hotel was brilliant, the newly refurbished rooms are beautifull, and even though they are still building the disco the rooms are quiet enough to... more

Don't be too critical of the Mercure ...
Have just returned from this hotel and, despite one or two gripes, I found it pleasant, and value for money. The positives: the hotel is literally on the beach, most of the staff are helpful and accommodating, the rooms are kept very clean; the food is ok and there are a number of different 'eateries' within the hotel. Also, you shouldn't have too much of a problem finding a sunbed. The negatives: the constant pressure to tip: I know this is customary, but it is a bit of an insult to be sneered at for not giving enough! Our towels were changed daily (a good thing, however ...) - on two occasions we had to contact reception to have fresh ones put in the room. The a la carte food was bland to say the least! Elsewhere, after about 5 days, the imited menu does begin to grate. Ultimately, don't have too high expectations and you won't be disappointed with this hotel ... they do seem to have taken feedback on board as, looking at some of the previous reviews, I can confim that many of the signs/leaflets are in English, there were many families with small children and the hotel seem to be trying to put on events to cater for all ... Above all - despite the few disappointments experienced at this hotel, you can't beat sitting on the terrace, cold drink in hand, and looking out to the sea - this more than makes up for any small problems, and is a feature that many of the more expensive hotels don't have!
So and so
The hotel is closely located to the Marina (20min on the beach or 5min by taxi from in front of the hotel) where you can see some nice boats and a European priced (supposed to be high class) restaurant. The nearby town is a 15min taxi drive and excellent if you wish to take a look at the Tunisian lifestyle. The hotel is not the 5 star described, more a 3-4 star, but the staff are trying their best. The food is very varied, the rooms are basic but large and clean, the common areas are well kept (although the front garden is so dried because of the sun), the beach is OK. Watch out for jelly fish though! OK holiday is you stay less than one week.
One of the best place in Port El Kantaoui
Mercure Diar El Andalous was great! Some of the previous reviews were discouraging but I guess things must have changed. Everything was perfect about the Diar El Andalous - the location (just 15 mins walk away from Port El Kantaoui marina), the staff, the rooms, the food, the beach - everything. They even noticed that my wife was celebrating her birthday during our stay there and room service provided us with a cake on the day!
Going back again
We booked a bridge holiday via Panorama and despite the rain (3 days) thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The hotel was exceptionally clean, the staff were extremely helpful and friendly at all times and although there was no Tia Maria to be had at the bar it was a great holiday - recommended we will be back again next March
Fabulous week away
My friend and i wanted a cheap relaxing week away somewhere hot. We actually decided to book allocation on arrival and were lucky enough to be allocated a room at the diar andalous. The hotel itself was lovely, couldnt fault any of the staff and room was very clean and the maids came in every day and made shapes out of our pj's! The pool area was very clean and the hotel has its own secton of the beach. We were told that we were lucky as we didnt have to pay for sunbeds either by the pool or on the beach but most other hotel charge for this service. We didnt know what to expect with the food but i ca say that we both found something we could eat each night. All in all we had a great time and would reccomend this hotel to all ages. I would love to go back at the height of summer as the hotel was quite quiet in October.
Good holiday
We stayed at this hotel and wanted a beach / relax type holiday and it was good. 5* start in Tunisia is 3-4 really. Lots of facilities at the hotel, but finish of room was not great but OK -rooms were in need of a refit, however were clean and good bathroom. Lobby was Ok and so were the cafe and bars. There was entertainment in the evening but it was so so. There was a good beach bar next door. Marina can be reached by walking 20 mins either by beach or road. Overall for value for money would recommend it. However you need to remember this Africa. Definately try the Desert Trip which is a once in a lifetime experience for the Sahara Desert and Atlas Mountains, great value. Would recommend it.
very enjoyable
just returned from a very relaxing week (not long enough) in the DEA the staff were friendly and polite, plenty of choice in the buffet Style resteraunt , pool area and beach very clean and i've never seen so many sunbeds no need to get up early to put your towel out. Nice walk along the beach to the marina not too far by road if its not to hot. had a great laugh on the camel caravan. would definately go back to this hotel.
One week was enough!
We stayed at the DEA for one week. Having stayed last year at the Imperial Maharba in Port El Kantoui and this being a 5star also, we didn't think there would be any difference in standards. How wrong were we!! The check in was very rushed and confusing. The hotel did not have air con and it was a relief to get into the room as this was the coolest place in the hotel. The furniture in the room was dated and wardrobes were fallng to bits with exposed chipboard. Bathroom was clean. Being a bit of a bath fanatic even in hot countries, i couldn't wait to slip into a nice warm bath after the flight and have a beer. To my horror, the tap came off in my hand so there was no water running into the bath, just the shower. Having fixed the tap problem myself , the water was now running into the bath but was green with lots of black bits floating....very nice!!! On inspection of the plug because the drainage of water was slow, i then lifted the plug to find 6 inch strands of hair that was blocking the pipe.... not good! Went to the buffet restuarant for the first evening, it was manic with kids running everywhere. The food was okay but unsure what meat we were actually eating. We soon realised that the buffet was not for us and agreed that we would try the al-a-carte the following evening. Breakfast was very much the same chaos with the food being very european. We found ourselves eating only toast, croissants and jam every day. Don't expect a good fry-up. Snack bar food during the day was very good, so we were looking forward to the al-a-carte meal as this came from the same kitchen. Unfortunately the menu was quite sparse and not much of an improvement from the buffet restaurant. From this we ate at a lovely restaurant at the Port and also went back to the Imperial Maharba's al-a-carte restaurant. This knocked spots off the DEA in every way. (We then wished we were staying at this hotel for the remainder of our holiday). Around the pool area was okay, plenty of sun loungers to go around and the pool bar was good. The bar man was friendly and would bring drinks to you at your sun bed. Overall the DEA does not warrant it's 5 star rating, it is more like a 3 star. We will not be returning to the DEA or recommend this hotel to anybody as you certainly need to stay in a true 5star hotel when you holiday in Tunisia. Nick and Kez.
which part of this hotel is 5 star?????
This is by far the worst hotel i have stayed in since i went on a club 18-30 holiday 8 years ago. I would firstly like to say that this hotel is no where nearly a 5star, they would be lucky to be given 3stars. The food was so poor that all I heard throughout my holiday was stories of people getting food poisioning. It was dirty. I had to ask the camber maid to change the sheets 3 times before we managed to get a sheet that looked white and clean. I was also told that there were not going to be many children at this hotel....hmmmm! The children everynight put on the entertanment, by singing and dancing to AGADO everynight for 7 nights. I never once got into the swimming pool as i was unable to see the bottom and I though better just to swim in the sea. Emma Burt
excellent week at the hotel DEA
