Olymp Hotel Reviews
" plesently supprised ! "
Submitted By: niggelvr6i stayed in the hotel olymp and was a little concerned after reading some poor reviews
but can honestly say i was supprised
1st yes the rooms are basic and a little worn but i had everything i needed
i met people staying in other hotels (wont mention names) but lets say better rated ones who had no end of trouble
i had a door that locked a shower that worked even if it did soak everthing but thats what a wet room does !!! a bed that was good with pillows and blankets i hurd reports form others of room breakins and bath tubs that were not attached to the floor!!
the food at the hotel was limited but on most occasion was warm and if your not fussy and after a hard day on the slopes food is food as long as its been cooked propperly and is edible if ya didnt want it then eat out !!!
as for borovets itself my snowboard equipment was good that came from the samokov hotel the sloaps were good to begin but as had no snow all week did get tired but up on the gondola runs much better and that only stopped 2 days due to high winds !
the night life is exelent the locals hastle you a bit but if your polite to them then they are back and popping in there bar for one will keep them happy afterwards and whats the harm in that
overall i has a awsome time i went alone and didnt feel unsafe or at risk at any time and would recomend it as a place for beginners to anyone just a shame the weather messed us about

" Not too bad "
Submitted By: Lucyh7Most of the hotel was vacant when we visited and although the walls are far from sound-proof we slept soundly and were comfortable. The bathrooms aren't in great shape but the shower was powerful and plenty of hot water available. Found a couple of English channels on the TV too. Overall we had a great time. We probably wouldn't go back to this resort as the runs are somewhat limited (great for first time skiiers/riders/kids)and the snow cover was really bad while we were there. Lots of grass and dirt on show and the gondola closed quite frequently throughout the week. Locals are friendly and not too pushy, though the village was pretty precarious as there was a lot of built up ice on the paths.
Advice: Great for first time skiiers, good nightlife
Activities: Katina/Mamma Mia's/Chilli Peppers/Red Dragon for food.

" Stay away "
Submitted By: Luke1987The food wasn't edible, it was either cold or undercooked. The staff were the rudest people i've met and very unhelpful. They had 2 dogs sitting outside the hotel barking all night. You may aswell sleep on the floor as the beds were very hard.
I recommend you stay away from this hotel. The only good thing about our holiday was the snowboarding and night life as everywhere offered you a free shot ;-)
Advice: Stay away from Olymp
Activities: snowboarding

" Stayed at the hotel olymp for a week... "
Submitted By: Miss N TuttyRoom was half painted and had holes in the bathroom walls. Was situated uphill from the main ski centre and slopes, and no ski bus was arranged for customers.
Definately not a hotel to visit.

Submitted By: Mrs A J SchofieldThe rooms were very comfortable and warm with plenty of space to dry your clothes after a day on the slopes.
The bathroom was adequate - clean but with a few cracked tiles. The beds were very comfy (or was I just very tired?).
In the brochure it said that there was a sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and massage - all of which were not available to us on our trip. The worst thing about this holiday was the food, it was awful, it was never hot (not even if you went down as soon as they started serving -we tried!). The variety was very poor and although I’m an adventurous eater I wouldn't try some things. The best meal was breakfast when we filled up on toast!
The hotel itself is a great value budget hotel for skiing but if like us you’re used to nice, good food then don't stay here on a half board basis. B&B would be sufficient and eat out the rest of the time it's cheap enough.

Submitted By: Mr N ClaytonBulgaria and skiing do go together but there is always a compromise in quality but never the less, Bulgarian skiing option is exceptional value. I think this too goes for the Hotel Olymp.
It is 3* -Bulgarian Standard. Food is not always too hot but where do you find hot food, buffet style in a big hotel. Staff are more than helpful. Big praise to all of them. Not so sure about some of the patrons but hey!
The kids didnt like the colour of the pool and refused to swim but it is a proper swimming pool not the 'oversized footbath' often advertised as a swimming pool. Massage was highly recommended. Bar - marvellous. Big thanks to Midko.
BUT:
Its too far from the 'resort' . Ok 5 mins down the slope in the morning but 20 mins up the road with kids after a days skiing. Not nice.
The place is a bit less attractive than the bars in town, so its quite likely that the town will attract you back at night...another walk back. And don't forget your lift pass in the morning. There is a taxi service only 10 lev (£3- £4) when you find it!
Beware of Balkan Holidays antics however. Day time flights when booking magically change to 'nasty middle of the morning flights' once you have paid the balance and guess what, they have magically added a further flight about 1 hr later than the original flight time.
Ultimately though you cant fault it for the price, its a third of its Alpine counterparts.

Submitted By: Miss L BarrettShower had no curtain so had to leave clothes outside bathroom. Room had a hall great for leaving wet clothes. Rooms cleaned every day. Restaurant was very basic plenty of fruit for breakfast and cereal but evening meals a case of try what you see. However pizzas and steaks can be found in Borovets centre for very cheap. Beware that most bars in the town don’t offer measures they just pour.
Be up for a bit of walking as hotel is situated up a ski slope (this is the quicker and lighter route than road) not suitable for disabilities. Otherwise a very basic hotel for those interested in skiing and fun.

Submitted By: Mrs K RadleyAll rooms allocated were twins, three of which were on level 3 and one on level 2.
I am happy to report that while this hotel does offer basic accommodation, fixtures and fittings, we found the hotel to be very clean, comfortable and warm throughout our stay.
The rooms are a reasonable size, with space in front of the radiators for keeping bags out of the way or drying things off (although the area is carpeted). There is a luggage stand, but we brought considerably more luggage than it could accommodate (designed to sit one suitcase on). There are two double wardrobes as you enter the room (opposite the bathroom), although there are precious few hangers, a vanity desk with mirror which the TV is located on and two bedside tables, as well as twin beds.
I couldn’t tell you personally what the TV was like as we never switched it on, however our friends managed to find both cartoon and music stations. Our phone didn’t work, but ours was the only one in the group that didn’t.
I presume we were in a non smoking room as our room smelt fine, although the corridor outside did smell quite heavily of smoke.
Having read strange things about the bathroom before we went, I thought I’d add a bit about it. The room is completely tiled; therefore the shower is not separated by cubicle to the rest of the room. The room is best described as L shape, or square missing the top left corner.
In our bathroom you entered the room from the left off the “hall”. Directly opposite the door is the toilet, and shower area. The shower is not over the toilet, but over an area next to the toilet. The shower curtain has been designed to pull across the whole area though, instead of just the shower. And yes, you will need to move the toilet roll or it will get damp. The sink area was to the left as you entered the room and towel rail and heater to your right.
Best of all – there was no mould! And the bathroom appeared to be well cleaned every day.
We only ate at the hotel for our evening meal the first night. The food actually isn’t bad taste wise, but my husband is vegetarian and there was hardly anything for him to eat. Breakfast was a bit better – if you arrived very early there was tinned fruit available, otherwise there was cheese, bread, marble cake, scrambled and boiled eggs, one cereal choice and yoghurt (not pots of yoghurt but a big bowl).
The other main reason for not eating at the hotel was that there was a much nicer selection of food in Borovets centre, which was very, very cheap. Incredible pizza to be had at several restaurants, and a favourite for sheer variety and great hot chocolate was Ice Angels.
The location of the hotel does mean that you should be prepared for some walking, but as it’s a skiing holiday, if you’re not up for a little exercise, what are you doing here? What is great is that you can virtually ski in and out of the hotel, which we loved doing.
We had a fab holiday, and this hotel was ideal, as it was very cheap, very comfortable and we thought it was a good location.
" I have stayed in the Olymp quite a... "
Submitted By: Mr G. M. ConnollyI have had some of my best holidays and visits to Borovets here, and I have stayed at nearly all of the places in this resort, it being up with my very favourite ski and mountain resorts in the world.
The staff have always been pleasant and willing. Unfortunately, if you don't speak Bulgarian, it makes things a lot more difficult, everywhere in the country. People are travelling more to here though and the local people as well as visitors are loosening up together. I learnt that a good number of the maids speak good German for their purposes.
So persons whose only international language is English ought to be aware that English may not in some parts of Eastern Europe, as well as throughout the world though here particularly, be the first international language. Of course in Sofia and big cities it often is or is with other widely-spoken languages. I have experience that not only are the people so nice, but also so very educated and willing and helpful in an very aware and internationally adapted and cultured way, aware very much of the self and open.
But in the eastern countries especially in the countryside it may be as likely that the peoples also speak German and in the past have been used to conversing with most of their foreign tourists this way. This is how it has been is many places, though things have changed a lot back and forth in Bulgaria in the last century. And yet, things are still very similar in many ways.
I visited more recently and there was a good basic level of English I remember. The maids are very nice. The reception were very nice. There is nothing much to expect of them I suppose as this is a basic hotel and they are very good at allowing the guest to be aware of the normal three star facilities on arrival and afterwards if need be.
I was always very pleased. Since the renovation the rooms to me, though not in the stylish hotel class, or for everyone's benefit the expensive class, are as good as any. They are good and spacious enough whilst smallish, many with a good balcony and cosy without seeming at all basic. Recently there are a good number of rooms, I think most, with nice renovated wooden beam floors.
In The Olymp Hotel, the bar is nice and good. The restaurant is relaxed and unpretentious.
It is a happy and normal place to be with some elements of good, natural specialness, and all the people I spoke to staying here were content with their stay and evidently content in staying. One can enjoy the relaxed and unpretentious goings on of other visitors here easily in a normal way too, where for example at The Rila one is aware that the concern is more focussed on each visitor and there is a sense of greater social importance.
Though I love The Rila Hotel, The Olymp is fresh by comparison. The Olymp is better than a typical three star hotel for my money though with rooms a little smaller than usual, but with character and pleasant simplicity and service, though within a different kind of place to The Rila with it's better category facilities which are more than ample.

The rooms were very basic but reasonably clean and warm enough. The bathrooms were tiny with a hole in the floor for the shower water to go. It was necessary to remember to put your shoes on if you needed to go back into the bathroom or you would get wet feet. Rooms and holes in doors were revamped with lots of wood effect sticky backed plastic!
Staff on the desk were very unfriendly, they didn’t like to be bothered to get you your key and huffed and puffed a lot.
Room walls were pretty thin so I got woken up at about 3am each night when revellers returned after a night on the town.
I took my son to kindergarten at the Samokov which was quite a distance from the Olymp but at least a downhill walk. The lady instructor there was a nightmare and never smiled. I went back to collect my son early on the first day, he had spent most of the day colouring pictures indoors in a room that looked out onto a stone wall. The outdoor play area was minimal with a rotating gadget that the children could walk round pushing, similar to a gadget pushed by donkeys to pump water out of the ground. The instructor instantly made my son hate skiing as she was not encouraging. She was off-hand and hard. On day one there were about 11 children in the ski lesson, by the end of the week I saw one little lost soul being escorted by the straight faced lady, shuffling along on skis still on a flat piece of snow. Other parents had similar experiences. In tears, I complained in resort and I warn in advance that if you get a negative feeling on arriving at the kindergarden not to bother booking. The reimbursement was a very convoluted affair which left me out of pocket even more and worked in favour of the Bulgarians and I was charged extra for drinks each day ontop of what I had already paid. Even when I changed my booking to half days in the Samokov kindergarten my son remained very sad and did not want to return. Hi is normally an independent and confident little boy. There was no time for me to go in ski school and return in time for collecting him at lunch time so it messed up my own ski package. I do not recommend at all and I would suggest paying more where kindergarden is good, say Austria etc. I thought I was saving by going to Borovets but prices were high and by the time I paid for additional private lessons for my son, I may as well have booked a more expensive holiday nearer to home. Even the private instructor did not turn up to teach my son on the last day. We stood about in the cold for 45 mins waiting after I had paid him £30 plus tips on both of the previous two days for 2 hours of tuition. BUYER BEWARE!
Advice: Wouldn't go back again as a single parent of 5 year old.
