We stayed at this hotel for 2 weeks...
9 / 10
Jan 2006, Mrs J Howard

We stayed at this hotel for 2 weeks we are a family of 7 adults, including a disabled wheelchair dependent person. The service was great, the food was traditional and enjoyable, the staff were so friendly we were considering adopting them. we had great evening entertainment presented by the friendly staff, and enjoyed by all staying at the hotel.
I think your holiday is what you alone make it, if you enter another’s world expecting all home comforts then maybe you should stay at home! Sampling another’s culture and way of life is an important part of our holiday, and we would return again tomorrow given the chance.

This was a last minute booking made...
1 / 10
Jan 2006, Mrs S Lawrence

This was a last minute booking made via teletext as the holiday we were meant to go on had been cancelled due to the firm having gone bust.
As this holiday was advertised as 4* all inclusive we were not expecting to have our worst holiday experience. It is a shame we were not aware of the reviews for Sun Village before we went.
We were allocated to a room in one of the new blocks. The room was very basic for 4*. The sea view was one of a building site. The partitions between apartments consisted of chipboard and the stairs leading up to the apartments were very bad. My husband and I couldn’t use the bathroom at the same time as due to lack of shower curtains the other person would have been soaked. We had to put down towels to stop the water running into the rest of the room. The rooms were clearly still not finished with exposed wiring. The door to the room had to be locked from the inside otherwise it wouldn’t stay closed.
We could not believe our eyes when we found the dining room, which my husband described as a missen hut, with the furniture being white plastic patio chairs and tables. The food was terrible with little choice - nothing suitable for children. The food was not kept covered so the flies had a field day. The only snacks available was a tray of dried up sandwiches or pizza left at the pool bar about 4 pm. Ice cream was not available unless you were prepared to buy an expensive brand.
Stray animals were allowed to wander in and out with the staff not taking any notice. We ended up eating out at night to get a decent meal. Luckily we hadn’t taken any of the family with us as there would have been nothing for the children to do as there was no entertainment at all.
The swimming pool was not cleaned at all during our stay. Stray dogs were allowed to wander freely. A dog owned by a member of staff was walked on a lead but allowed to go to the toilet on areas of grass surrounding the pool area - none of which was picked up and disposed of. A real health hazard.
We usually go all inclusive but have never encountered all inclusive this bad. The choice of drinks was very limited and what was available was not very appealing. My husband does not drink spirits and each glass of lager he got tasted of ouzo.
Although the village of Sissi is lovely and we would like to go back again, I certainly wouldn’t recommend the Sun Village to anybody. If you are thinking of going all inclusive to Greece, please check beforehand what is included as their definition of all inclusive is different to Spain, Majorca and the Canaries where all inclusive is all inclusive.

I have just returned from an AI...
1 / 10
Oct 2005, Mr M Sterlicchi

I have just returned from an AI holiday and found the facilities were very basic 1* definitely not A class or 4* as advertised, my main complaints include
• Quality of cleanliness around the pool area was non existent - no one cleaned the pool furniture or picked up rubbish, broken glass dirty glasses and cigarette butts everywhere.
• The dining area provided inadequately cleaned glasses and plates etc.,
• The kitchen staff wore dirty clothes
• The food on some days was barely edible, particularly at breakfast
• The drinks were very poor quality with little choice
• The room in new block hadn’t yet been finished, gaps around all openings unpainted etc no hairdryers, phone connections or radios
• The balcony divided by cheap chipboard and balcony rails were unsafe and again not painted.
• The sea view was to the side over waste ground (rubbish tip) typical of Greece
• The staircase were temporary
The positives were that the rooms were kept reasonably clean and tidy, which I thanked the chamber maids and the on some days the food was good, but the choice limited.
While their nearly every guest complained, I felt no one listened as nothing changed.

I wouldn’t go here again if I was...

Sep 2005, Miss A Macdonald

I wouldn’t go here again if I was offered to stay for a month for free. It was the pits of the earth, food inedible, restaurant and staff filthy, all inclusive package pathetic, very little choice.(no spirits unless you buy a local spirit for 4euros).
The only entertainment here was a quiz or bingo that started about 10 o’clock every night. The pool was filthy and none of my party used it at all, we never even sat on the sun loungers because at night this is where the stray dogs slept, (scratching madly). We were booked for a weeks all inclusive and we spent the whole time out of the place, only going back to sleep there at night.
The rep's ears must have been sore (I thought) but when I came home and read the reviews I realised that she must be well used to the endless complaints that she received while we were there. DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT GOING NEAR THIS FLEAPIT, don’t waste your money. I could speak all night about this holiday, (with negativity) ,but I will stop here, BE WARNED PEOPLE.

WARNING - if you are considering a...

Sep 2005, Miss D Stanley

WARNING - if you are considering a holiday to this hotel, stop now!
My boyfriend and I arrived in the early hours and were directed to our room which was no more than a porta-cabin overlooking a building site/rubbish dump. The balcony was held by a couple of screws and the partitions were made of chip board. The windows and doors were not secure and we spent an hour trying to lock these before we could get some sleep.
We requested a room change first thing in the morning and we were given a room in the old block which appeared to have been vacated by a member of staff for us to move in to. For the first three days we were without hot water for showers in the morning and evenings and when we asked for this to be fixed we were left without cold water.
The whole hotel site is a health & safety hazard from the smell of sewerage, loose paving stones, dirty pool water, loose steps and balconies and the bars and dining areas.
This is the first hotel I have been to that was advertised as All Inclusive that was not at all. There is a 'small charge' for everything, and the food and drink that is included is poor quality, badly presented and basically a health hazard.
The dining room is a canteen with plastic furniture. All staff wandered in and out of the kitchens as they pleased and breakfast was laid out the night before. The food consisted of pork, mashed potatoes and pasta for lunch and dinner was the left-overs warmed up. Coffee/tea was only available at breakfast and at no other meal times.
The All Inclusive Wine and Lager appeared to be watered down or of the poorest quality and all the plastic beakers were tainted with ouzo.
The pool was not cleaned once whilst we were there that we saw and there is no access to the sea as advertised.
Sissi Village however is beautiful with plenty of bars and tavernas and if you plan to visit find another hotel in the area.
You have been warned.

Me and my boyfriend have just got...
9 / 10
Sep 2005, Miss K Nicholson

Me and my boyfriend have just got back from the Sun Village and have had a really good time. After reading the reviews on this website I was really nervous about going. Once we arrived there the staff were really lovely and took us to our room. We did have to pay for the air-conditioning but it was worth it.
The food was really nice, lots of different salads and loads of fresh bread. We really enjoyed the food and went out a couple of nights to eat. Sissi has some really nice tavernas overlooking the sea. Every day are room was cleaned. We didn’t find the entertainment a problem, we played water polo one day in the pool and on a night quizzes were arranged. The staff really do try there best.
We just did one day trip to an island called Spinalonga, that was well worth the money. Sissi is a very pretty place and you can get a taxi into Malia or Stalis for 15 euros.
Are room had a lovely sea view. Sun Village is a very pretty place and I would recommend this place to anyone.

1 / 10
Aug 2005, Mrs J Watson

In a nutshell I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. Whether young or old. No entertainment at all especially for young children and teenagers. Evening entertainment consisted of maybe a game. Of bingo if you are lucky.
Afternoon snacks consisted of just pizza and a bowl of crisps, which were left at the bar to help yourself. (if they were not stale). Food in the restaurant was inedible at times and only appeared to get better after serious complaints from the guests.
Children’s pool very small and very dirty - you can see it is not used at all - it is situated away from the main pool and you cannot even sit next to it with sun beds. Not good at all for parents with very small children.
If it wasn’t for the people we met the holiday would have been an absolute disaster. While waiting for our taxi at the end of our holiday we saw other guests arriving and thought they do not know what they have let themselves in for. I do not think I will travel to Greece or any of the islands in the future as this has put us right off.

Jul 2005, Mr J B

As the majority of recent reviews of this hotel have said, this hotel is absolutely terrible. If you are thinking about going to Sun Village, then think again, and save yourself a lot of disappointment.
Problems we encountered during our stay included:
Our hotel room, recently built, was not finished – for example there were bare wires exposed from the walls
The hotel room door would not shut unless it was dead-locked from the inside
Having paid €70 for air conditioning, we found that the air conditioning did not work; instead it only blew hot air into the room – in a building made of wood and hardboard this made the temperature in the room unbearable
When we complained about the air conditioning we were told by a hotel worker that we did not need it, as he had never spent a night using air conditioning.
The hotel staff were rude and unhelpful
The food in the hotel was inedible. In a salad we found that the cucumbers were so old that the flesh had actually turned brown. The hotel had tried to disguise this by covering the cucumber in salad dressing.
There were ants crawling in the breakfast cereal.
At 3am every morning without fail we were woken up to shouting and screaming of drunk hotel guests returning from their nights out – the hotel staff did nothing to shut them up.
We spent as much time as was possible out of the hotel, returning only for meals (although towards the end we stopped doing this due to the appalling quality of the food on offer) and to sleep.
Sissi itself is a really nice town… if you want to go there then we highly recommend Anixi apartments. There you will have a lovely room, a clean pool, a genuine sea view and, most importantly, absolutely fantastic hospitality.

I think everyone on here is being...

Jul 2005, Miss F R Bullard

I think everyone on here is being unfair. We found our time at the Sun Village very pleasant. The staff were very friendly as long as you were friendly to them and we all became close friends with them, the pool is clean and so are the rooms. the towels aren’t changed everyday however I feel this wasn’t necessary.
The food is usually the same everyday however if you change what you choose there are plenty of variations. the choice of drinks is satisfactory and by 11 o'clock when the free drinks stop coming the sissy arms right down the road about a 5 minute walk provides entertainment which we thoroughly enjoyed!
The town itself is beautiful and the restaurants along the harbour bring a welcome break from the hotel food. I had a wonderful holiday and stayed happily there for two weeks the whole atmosphere is friendly and the weather is lovely! I hope you all enjoy it as much as we did!!

After looking forward to our holiday...
1 / 10
Jul 2005, Miss V Aldridge

After looking forward to our holiday for months, I left Sun Village feeling extremely disappointed and angry. Upon arrival we discovered we had to pay 35 euros for air conditioning, just to make our room bearable to stay in.

We were given a room in the newly built (barely finished) block of rooms. Sheets of chipboard divided the “sea view” balconies. Whilst you could see the sea, the main view was over a wasteland and scrap from the building work.
The rooms being basic did not bother us, but the wires hanging out of the walls, the lights that flashed even when it was switched off, the ants, which constantly roamed the room, the shower, which soaked the whole of the tiny bathroom due to the absence of a shower curtain, and few clean towels, did.

I wanted to leave less than 2 hours after arrival, but we stuck it out hoping things would look better in the morning.
In some ways they did, the weather was amazing and a short walk away was the centre of Sissi, which was a lovely, friendly little fishing town.
However as nice as the surroundings were the hotel was poor. The vast majority of the staff was rude and hostile and the reception staff in particular were very unhelpful. The all-inclusive deal was a joke, advertised as 4*, drinks were very limited (a couple of cheap fizzy drinks, cheap lager, ouzo, raki or wine) and only served for free until 11pm. Meals consisted of bland, greasy and very poorly, over cooked food and though the salads were nice, you could see everything was made up of the leftovers from previous days. Flies covered the bread, the fruits juice was watered down and there was no such thing as variety.
All of this is ‘enjoyed’ (HA!) on the comfort of plastic garden furniture.

We made the best of a bad situation with visits to nearby towns (Sissi, Hersonissos & Malia are very nice), but be warned public transport comes in the form of one bus a day or taxis which aren’t too cheap. My suggestion is don’t even bother ordering a take-out lunch unless you need a laugh (or cry).
Over all the time spent at Sun Village was a HUGE disappointment!

Sun Village Sissi Crete This holiday...
1 / 10
Jul 2005, Mr A.G Jones

Sun Village Sissi Crete
This holiday has to be the worst holiday I have ever had. There were only two redeeming features, the room and the sunshine. My wife and I usually go on All Inclusive deals as we find this easier. However on arrival we were told that there was a weekly charge for air conditioning of 35 euros that is about £24 per week and another 10 euros for the safe deposit box. No beach towels are provided and usually with fully inclusive deals you get a bottle of water a day for your room but they do not do this. They also do not like you taking a bottle to the dining room and filling it up. As the temperature was ranging between 30 and 34 degrees you had to drink a lot so as not to dehydrate.
The food was in a word disgusting and it was not only me complaining there were Dutch and Welsh family there and we all felt as though the management did not care. The food was not local and it was badly prepared, hard rice, very greasy dishes and when one of the guests complained about the amount of oil they just said to her that it was good for her heart. The only reasonable dish was salad but if it didn’t all go at one sitting they would bring it out for the next meal. All the juices had been watered down. Flies were all over the food and had no covering; I am amazed we didn’t get a tummy upset. Normally an All Inclusive you get the local spirits but the choice here is Raki, beer and soft drinks only.
The hotel is situated on a rocky foreshore and it is very difficult to swim from there. So the only real opportunity to swim is the hotel pool, which we all complained about as it had clearly not been cleaned and there was a ring of grease around the waterline where children had written their names in the grease. After much complaining the pool was emptied and refilled but not cleaned. Also, people are allowed to take dogs to this hotel and one of them messed by the pool. Despite telling staff about this it was not cleaned and allowed to dry in the sun with children running around the pool.
The attitude of staff was terrible and although promising to do something when pressed it never happened.
The nearest town is Sissi and is a short walk about ¼ mile and is very pleasant with some good restaurants and cafes. The nearest big town Malia is a 40 euro taxi ride as the buses only run a couple of times a day.
I went to Crete in 94 and stayed in a bed and breakfast it was a wonderful experience that tempted me to go back.
This holiday was undoubtedly the worst one I have ever had and proof of this was on the day before we left on 13th July the representative of Med Hotels ran out of complaint forms. The manager did not turn up on our day of departure.
It has the potential this hotel to be very good but not with the present management.
You have been warned!
Allan
