We stayed at the Island Hotel Fortuna May 25th to June 1st 2010 on a half board basis with Portland Holidays. The hotel looked quite impressive as we arrived by boat. It is unfortunate that the front of the hotel has been painted but the rear is a mess, really in need of a coat of paint. It got dark around 9pm and the views from the island to Porec, all lit up were lovely. Hotel staff were all very friendly and helpful and the food was quite good for a 3 star hotel. There was a reasonable variety, well cooked and of good quality. The only complaint about the food is that the dinner time was 7pm ‘til 9pm but if you arrived to eat after 8pm some of the dishes would have been finished and not replace. The same happened if you were not down early in the morning for breakfast.
The rep organises a free guided tour of Porec followed by wine tasting in the old town. It was very informative and is well worth joining in.
The weather was great all week, with a break in the sunshine for a good lightning storm on one of the days, with twisters out to sea.
It’s in a lovely setting on a small island which you could walk around in half an hour. The island is forested. There are rabbits running around and a peacock posing for photos. Amongst the trees are the remains of holiday chalets and other building from a bygone era. There are lots of pleasant places to sit and enjoy the views out to sea. There are two pools, one for children, and one for adults. It was reasonably quiet when we were there and no rush to grab a sun bed. I would imagine that when the hotel was full it would be quite difficult to get a sun bed if you were not up a 6am and getting your towel out there. We did not see any day time activities. The evening entertainment was the worst we had ever heard.
A frequent free shuttle boat takes you to and from the mainland all day and it ran until midnight whilst we were there. I understand it runs until 1am during the peak season. The island is only a 5 minute boat ride from the mainland and the landing stage on the mainland is only a few minutes walking distance from the old and new towns. All the local Croatians we met were very warm, polite and friendly. Unfortunately the main streets of their pretty and interesting old town are being spoiled by lots of tacky souvenir shops. For a pleasant stroll on the mainland turn right after you get of the shuttle boat. A tree lined trail follows the coast for miles and there are lots of places to stop and have a swim or drink. There are three large supermarkets less than 10 minute walking from the landing stage. Lots of good wines there at a reasonable price.

May 2009, Anniversary

We went to Croatia to celebrate out 25Th wedding anniversary. The idea of a hotel on it,s own little island sounded so different and would hopefully make the trip a little more special. We weren,t disappointed. Apart from being rather dark and old fashioned on the main ground floor, every where else was freshly painted and so clean. The people were very friendly and helpful despite working long hours. We had fantastic views over the sea and Porec. It is well worth paying a little extra to ensure a room with a sea view. The food was great with so much to choose from. Walking around the island itself is very peaceful and there is ample to see and discover(The house where King Edward and Mrs Simpson stayed)
Porec is full of history and the tour around the town is reletivley short but very interesting. For good views, climb the Belfry but avoid midday if you have sensitive ears!
Some of the trips entail long spells on a coach(3hrs) We plan to return and hire a car so we can stop off along the way. We did visit Venice. Well worth 2.5 hrs on a catamaran. It is very crowded and busy in Venice and quite easy to get lost but still worth a visit. Cost approx.£50 each.
There is the facility to hire a bike, take a water bus or simply walk around the coast line of Porec. We were lucky and the weather was warm and sunny. If it had rained i could be writing something completely different.

  • Advice: Recommend it .
  • Activities: Walking around coast line.

This hotel is located across the water by boat (free to Fortuna guests) from the resort of Porec. The boat runs roughly every 30 minutes from about 7am until 1am.
We stayed half board but wished he hadn't, not because anything about the hotel was bad, just the resort was beautiful and had such lovely restaurants, we just couldn't resist eating out rather than at the hotel.
The resort of Porec is beautiful with its cobbled streets and hidden court yards, its has a large number of restaurants serving mainly Italian cuisine.
There is no air conditioning in the hotel rooms which at times make it rather unbearable, but just means going to the bar sooner. You are able to hire a fan from reception for a few quid which we found did help.
The hotel is looking rather tired, but the rooms are comfortable, the food is good, every where is spotless and the staff are great.
The pool is very small, but to be honest the sea is so calm and clear you don't need the pool. We did purchase some sea shoes when we got there (£3), which helped as it’s rather rocky.
The island the hotel is on is nice, there are lots of little coves for swimming and provides a nice gentle walk if you fancy it (takes 20 minutes to complete a full lap of the island).
From the resort of Porec there are lots of trips you can take - Venice, Slovenia, boat cruises down the coast etc.
We went to Venice for the day from Porec via ferry, you have around 5 hours so we recommend that you buy a city guide in the UK and then leave the ferry group as soon as possible. We did a number of trips but found that there were so many interesting places to go and see we never managed to do everything we wanted to, we just ran out of time :-(
Eating and drinking in Croatia is quite expensive, but definitely worth every penny.
We had a great two weeks and would definitely go back and stay at the Fortuna again, we felt this was a lovely hotel and probably the best located hotel in the whole of Porec, at the end of the night you could escape over the water and away from the hustle and bustle.
