BEST PLACE IN THE SUN

Oct 2011, Sandgrown Lanc

We stayed in Marietta village,Skala,Kefalonia for two weeks in September, our second visit .Obviously we liked it the first time hence our return it was as perfect as before. It is a very attractive place and spotlessly clean. The apartments are very comfortable with everything you need for self catering. The staff are pleasant and cheerful and very approachable if you need anything. We had beautiful weather all of the time which helps but we found the other holidaymakers were as relaxed and happy as we were.It is well placed for both the main road and the beach both within five to ten minute walk.Skala is a lovely with lots of great tavernas and restaurants nice little bars supermarkets and bakeries. We love it so much we have already booked for next year.

  • Advice: Relax and enjoy every minute

have just returned from holiday and stayed at the Marietta village,Skala what a great holiday .The apartments are clean and well looked after, bed linen and towels changed every few days cannot fault the staff at all. This has to be one of the most beautiful islands of Greece, well worth hiring a car and seeing the best sights. Will defiantly be returning again.

  • Advice: To hire a car and see this beautiful island

Clean appartments, a nice pool and lovely bar staff. The drains are a bit smelly and the rooms basic, but for 3 star in Greece it is great.

Lovely Apartment. Very spacious and clean. Small balcony but we didnt travel to Kefalonia to spend all day in the apartment. Good location, 5 min walk into the resort of Skala. Quiet room, towels changed & bins emptied daily. Bed linen changed every two days. Friendly staff. Nice pool but spent most of our time on the beach. Would recommend!!
Car hire a must to see such a beautiful island. Recommend the trip to Ithaca!!
Visit Sami and find out all about the making of Captain Corellis Mandolin

We stayed at the Marietta in May and it was brilliant. The rooms were basic but clean and maids kept it clean and tidy everyday. The only negative thing was the smell of the drains in the bathroom.
The staff were friendly and the receptionist went out of her way to sort us a taxi to take us to town on a couple of wet evenings.
The pool was always clean, lots of beds, bar food really good as was the breakfast.
Every day staff were cleaning and tidying the hotel grounds, every morning the pool area was cleaned even the railings were wiped down! Just could not fault our stay, would recommend to others we would and return again.

Me and my boyfriend have just returned from Marietta Studios and had a brill time. The rooms were basic but clean. The cleaners changed the bins every day and we had fresh towels every 3 days. The pool area was clean and tidy. The barman was abit mardy. One night it was about 12.30am we was told to be quite. The rep said the bar closes when the last standing man leaves the barman switched the lights of at 1.30am i take it that was our time to leave. In Skala there are plenty of places to eat. Siroco was the best place. The food is lovely and Andras was funny. Veto bar is a nice place to drink and relax they also put all the football matches on as the barman at Marietta wouldnt. Sally's bar is good aswell for the cocktails. We did the glass bottom boat which was really good. We had a barbecue once we got to Xi beach and drank wine. We also covered ourselfs in clay mud which apparently takes 10 years of you lol. Really good excurison. I would visit Marietta Studios again.

well here goes- we thought we had cooking utillites NO T.V. - NO infact there was nowt tell a lie a small little fridge set into small cubard no wonder i missed it when i went to complain as i had printed the details of i went to show our rep and she agreed it was misleading as it stated ALL rooms have cooking facillites in them as a fan and fridge there is a fan but it cost you 7 euros per dayshe did try to move us but only to another b/b appartment as the one we was in stunk and could not get rid of the stench from the drain that room was 32 moved us to 25 lot better the self catering rooms wernt much better as the couple next door to us showed us 2 ring cooking plate small kettle and i do mean small ok now on to the pool area nice and clean plenty of sun beds but hit may get busy in peak pool bar food very dear 7 euros for breakfast not much to fill you isaus 1 egg few beans 2 toast and a cup of tea or coffee never hot just about warm and small juice if you go out follow road to you get to the sign for the mosaics turn right then left best brekie on the strip 2bacon 2 egg 2 sausage mushrooms tomatoes beans tea or coffee fruite juice bread or fried bread 6euros does good meals at night as well but there are plenty of them comeing out of your ears tobacco and fags can only get from one place thats the kiosk at the top of the main strip when i say main strip thats it one st no entertainment apart from this bloke sing calls himself the rat pack haha karioki at its worst in one of the decent hotels near the beach back to the hotel dont be tempted with the rep speel about trips go accross the road penam coaches doit for less 10euros per person less so it does mount up island tour well worth the 20euro see all the island from top to bottom and down the other side tour guide mind of infomation she likes her pussy cats as you will hear when her phone rings 25euros for the zante tour this was ok 9 till 4 but we were back for 3.15 they did not go to zante town pity as that wat we was hoping for but nice trip out one island sunken boat in water very shallow so its great for kids this trip is done by taxi boat service as well would be cheaper to do it by taxi 7 euro there the pick up 6 hours later 7 euro back - hotel rooms tidy change twice aweek with towels at nite if you want to watch t,v in bar forget it unless you can speak greek asked a few time to put it on eng tv but would not as i reminded him it was for the guest you can imagine his reply the only decent person was the young lady on the bar in the morning very polite to everyone could not say the same for most of them well the area it self if you can drive ok no probs one bus and only goes to one destination poros back at 4 if u miss it 15 euros back in taxi so the only way to c it is on island tour you get to see the blue caves and the lovely stalagnites but be aware the rep forgets to tell you its a extra ten euros to get into these sites 4euro for the the litte boat ride and 6 to see the stalagnites overall you pays your money and takes yourchoice ok final question would i go back- no as i said nowt to do only drink and eat if you dont drink and drive you will end up playing pontoon or gin rumy all nite now to me thats boring-price guide--2.50 to 3.00 euros a pint shorts can differ from 3.50 euros to 5 euros

My partner and I have just returned from The Marietta studios in Skala Kefalonia, and thought I would pass on to other travellers our experiences. On arrival at the hotel we were met by the receptionist who directed us to our room.It was not so far from the pool, just up a short upward path and some steps to our landing, which i was relieved about as I have arthritis and didnt relish a long walk to our room every day/night.The room was cool and clean on arrival, basic, but had loads of cuboard and wardrobe space, a nicely sized shower/bathroom which had a shower that had wonderfully strong water pressure and lots of lovely hot water(a relative luxury in Greece)The beds were quite comfortable once you got used to them. But as always only one pillow per person was supplied, I did ask for another one and one was there the very next day.The pillows were very comfortable. For the first time ever I had decided not to take my hairdyer as in past years I have taken it with me only to find there was one already supplied in the room, unfortunately this was the wrong year not to bring it as the room didnt have one.It cost me 9 euros for a travel one in Skala. There was a small fridge in the corner of the room which was invaluable, sadly it was so noisy we had to turn it off before we went to bed as the noise kept us awake. The pool area was well looked after and very clean, I would have loved to have relaxed more by it with my book but was unable to do so because the loud 1980's thudding music coming from the poolbar was unbearable, instead we chose to go to the beach everyday as we couldnt stand it!The same music was hammering out in the evening also which put us off, gentle relaxing music would have been much better suited for day and night, the bar was always empty, I wonder why??We did have an hr or so around the pool on our 2nd day there and the water was lovely, pity the ambiance hadnt been as relaxing as the water was.The cleaning of the rooms were not fantastic, it was obvious that a quick flick round would do, and everytime the linen/towels were changed i noticed holes in the towels along with the occasional marks on the sheets/towels aswell.Nothing major that you would demand they were changed but still not perfect. The shelf where we held our toothbrushes/paste ect was only cleaned once in the fortnight we were there. One day there wasnt a bag in the toilet bin, so we put our own carrier in it, and one day our waste toilet paper ect from the bathroom bin was left outside on the balcony which my partner had to take himself to the bin on the next level. The breakfast was very monotonous to be honest, it was either 2 eggs, toast and jam, fruit , cornflakes, ham and cheese sandwiches tea and coffee and orange juice, you could only choose one or the other combinations, by the end of the first week i couldnt look another egg in the face!!The staff seemed very miserable, with the exception of the smiley barman who was a nice happy guy.The short walk into Skala towncentre is a gentle one, but beware of the traffic as there are no paths for part of the way up the road. The best part of our holiday in Skala was the wonderful Scirocco taverna, run by Andreas and Karen, and theyre wonderful staff who are so warm and welcoming. The food is lovely and there is a comfortable atmosphere, with always lots of laughter and fun from Andreas. The best beach we found was as far as you could go on Skala to the right. All in all the holiday wasnt too bad i just think the hotel needs to pull its socks up somewhat, especially in this financial climate where money is hard earned and not so easily spent, if they want ppl to return to theyre hotel there needs to be a few changes to improve some things especially the cleaning, and a more relaxing atmosphere would maybe encourage more ppl to use the poolbar.

Skala is an amazing resort to stay at if you are after a relaxing holiday with plenty of choice for eating out and there is a good mixture of bars with decent happy hours! 'Captains bar' have the best cocktails but can be expensive if you go outside happy hour. 14 nights and we ate at a different restaurant every night with plenty left that we didnt even get to try-a couple of favourites were 'flamingo' and 'mikelatos family' but all are very friendly and pretty reasonable prices and good food. The beach is great at skala- its sand and shingle but can get quite busy if you go straight ahead of you when you get to the bottom of the steps, so if you walk along a bit further to either side it's quieter. Take plenty of euros as there are two ATM's but when they run out of money they can be empty for a few days because of the relaxed greek way of life!
Marrietta village is a nice hotel which is clean and generally what you would expect for the star rating and is in a good location to the town. The pool area is nice with a decent sized pool and plenty of sunbeds but snacks and drinks are a lot cheaper in the town. We were sent a letter a week before we came to say that there was no air conditioning at the hotel, but when we arrived it seemed that some apartments did have it and others didnt. we were told by other guests that it was B&B guests that have air con but self catering that dont! luckily we managed without it but its not the point really! All in all an enjoyable and relaxing holiday and we would definately go back to skala.
