1 week for two, self-catering, Kefalonia.
This was a fabulous holiday. Kefalonia is relatively new to the tourist scene and as such is more or less unspoilt (visit while you can). We wanted basic accommodation for a reasonable price which we definitely found with the Marietta Apartments - the staff were friendly, the rooms clean and the facilities perfectly adequate for self-catering. Would definitely recommend staying here if you are looking for a base from which to explore, but if you are a stay-in-the-hotel-by-the-pool-all-day type, look for something a little more livelily.
Skala itself is beautiful with plenty of traditional and touristy restaurants so it depends what you are looking for. The sea around the island is crystal clear and good for swimming - check out Mirtos (or Turtle) Beach which has to be seen from the cliff top to be believed. There are always good places to eat and explore and of particular note was the Monastery and Vineyard at Agios Gerasimos where you can sample the local wines and buy some to take home. Hiring a car was cheap and we managed to get around quite a lot of the island in the week, including Skala, Sami, Argostoli, the Melissani Caves, a natural wonder, and Drogorati Cave which opened after the earthquake in the sixties - again, marvels of the modern world and have to be seen for a modest fee.
Argostoli wasn’t so great - just a typical city, nothing actually wrong with it but not particularly interesting. However if that was the low point of the holiday, you can give me Kefalonia every year for the rest of my natural life. It’s possibly not the greatest destination for kids, but for a relaxing break it’s perfect.
