" Ok this is where I start. Puerto... "

Ok this is where I start. Puerto Plata airport on arrival, all seemed well the flight was between 8-9 hours long and it was smooth and all went well even the in flight meals were nice.

To go to the Dominican Republic you need, a tourist card that can cost £8 from the embassy here in the UK, we did this as we were warned from our agent we could be waiting some time filling out forms when we arrived, by doing it before it allowed us to be the first through the gate but we still had to wait for our baggage. So not that good as some got there bags before we did, still we were the first to our destination though so was faster. Ok my partners luggage was damaged but not much, nothing missing and we was told to let our rep know.

We did the following day when we met for the welcome meeting, his response was to pass the buck and say that we should have been asked to report it to airport staff and they would have helped us fill in the forms needed to reclaim any loss, but as I said the airport staff said different.

Putting all that aside all was good, we had never been away from home b4 and was looking forward to our time away from England as this was our honeymoon, so it was important to us to enjoy all of what was on offer, the resort was great, the staff were ever so nice & helpful, the food was great ,it was very clean, and the weather was what we expected very hot ,ok more complaints ,as what we were informed honeymooners get a gift, we never I complained 3 times still no such gift, also the day we got there was my birthday still no gift, I was told we was to get a gift (a drink)free bottle of rum, and a (basket of fruit )plus they bring a cake out for you when you go for dinner, but no such luck here ,we got chatting to some other guests that were lucky to get all this.

I must say that maybe we did get our gifts sent to another room I don’t know, but think it was unfair. Still we thought this is no such problem really, little things really that could not harm our enjoyment, we were made to feel welcome we felt safe and safer still we could leave our stuff anywhere and it would not be touched, the people are so very good and work for such little pay, after all its a third world country as such, if you was to ask if we would go again I would say yes without hesitation, we would even take our kids, but only 1 more problem we have 5 kids, they only allow a max of 3 in a room, you work it out.

We would need 3 rooms plus take along two sitters for them. Alot of expense for rooms that easily could put a family of 5 in. They were good sized rooms, this resort as alot to offer and is it was a real joy to stay there, putting aside the small things that can be improved upon on ,the local transport is good the local people are very friendly a joy to be with, they have got all the facilities you would need under one resort plenty of shops on site ,bars, restaurants 3 being ,ala` carte/Mexican, Italian, and med, they have a doctors surgery on site too but we had no need for a doc, water sports and excursions galore.

If you are a family of two adults one child I would say go there and see for yourself, we had a great time they do alot for kids too, they have three pools, a gym, you got it all for a holiday you choose either relaxation or adventure they got what you want. Everyone’s taste is accounted for with food .we will go back.

" At first I was somewhat nervous and... "

At first I was somewhat nervous and had reason to be since things seemed to keep going wrong the entire day of our departure. We were last to check in so we were separated on the plane and then our flight was delayed some time. Once we got there we had some trouble checking in and when we finally got to chill out and take a dip in the pool, it rained! However all the anxiety and bad luck went away by the evening when we experienced our first night of entertainment beginning with the 10pm show over at the stage, followed by the celebration of the 10th Anniversary out in the street at Pueblo Principe. So much fun!

Being a picky eater I was sceptical about whether or not I would be able to find anything to eat while I was there, but I soon found that there was plenty for me to try in the buffet and in the a la carte restaurants. I was very impressed and relieved that there was a nice selection of food there, and even the food I tried that was native to the country was delicious.

Everything about the resort was spectacular, though there were a few minor tweaks here and there. The resort is still young and it was the first resort I’ve ever been to down in the Caribbean, so I don’t have too much to complain about. I think those who find it to be substandard should cut it some slack. There are certainly some things that need to be ironed out but it's growing and the people that work there are doing their best to contribute to its growth. I really admire the people that work there, and you cannot blame them if they aren’t always as friendly and responsive as you want them to be.

The only complaint I have is a minor incident I had at the end of my trip. I left my camera inside the Disco club on my last night there. My fault. I ran back to reception at 3:30 and was told to go directly to the disco at 8am the before my departure because they would be cleaning it. So I did, and at first I was ignored by the maids and then I had to take a few minutes to explain myself.

They told me to wait five minutes while I think someone went to get a key...I waited ten minutes because I had to go ten minutes later, and then walked back to reception. They told me the owner would be in by 9am, but I had to leave by 8:30. They tried to call the owner, which was very nice...but at the same time, if any of them could have just let me in or gone in themselves, the job would be done with in 30 seconds or less.

I gave my contact and mailing information to my representative and I have yet to hear about it. It was only a disposable camera, but I had a good amount of memories stored inside that I wish to have back. I take full responsibility for having lost the camera in the first place, but I do wish they would have treated me with a bit more respect on the matter.

On a much lighter note, the absolute most outstanding hi-light of my trip was the ever-lasting dancing every single night, though unfortunately I did not get into it until midway into my trip...but just to observe it was amazing. The animation team have soooo much energy, it's insane. They are so enthusiastic and dedicated to what they do. They try so hard to make sure every one is included and having fun...and although they can be persistent at times, it's forgivable because once you get up and dance with them, you won’t want to sit back down.

I want to give a special shout out to Fernando, Ricky Martin, Mickey Mouse, and the rest of the team...and to Robert (the hard working pool maintenance worker) I had some good times with all of you and you really made my time spent there unforgettable.

I most certainly want to return to Bahia Principe San Juan, and I wish to see more of the Dominican Republic as well. In conclusion I just need to say that don’t take my word or anyone else’s for it...you NEED to experience this beautiful place for yourself.

For first timers, I recommend it, but if you are young like me, be assertive when dealing with the staff and other people because they may not take you seriously.

" I stayed here with my boyfriend for a... "

I stayed here with my boyfriend for a fortnight, got a really good deal I was really impressed with the hotel and facilities could not find fault with anything. Staff were friendly , shows were brilliant on every evening with entertainment throughout the day food and drink were great cocktails included all inclusive facilities throughout the evening bars down strip open to 3.00a.m . There were various restaurants including a mexicon, Italian, seafood, Mediterranean and buffet style self service plus snack bar on the beach.

You have to book a la carte meals via reception one visit to each per week. Watersports and diving lesson are included in price. Fitness room and tennis courts all free. Pools really nice with pool bars main pool was being renovated when we arrived it opened in our second week. Lots of available sunbeds due to hotel not fully booked. Rooms were gorgeous massive really comfortable bed air conditioned and well stocked mini bar. Cleaned to a high standard.

Excursions worth going on are jeep safari, gri gri lagoon and Bacardi Island book with campo travel down the beach much cheaper than tour operators. If buying anything from little shops on beach be careful and work out prices we got ripped off. Not much more for me to say accept you won’t be disappointed with this hotel and its facilities.
" This holiday was to celebrate my... "

This holiday was to celebrate my husbands 40th Birthday and it was the BEST holiday, he found it very relaxing. I was very apprehensive after reading the first review. The hotel accommodation is not 4 star if you compare it to England but it would definitely be classed at 4 star in the Dominican especially if you see how some people live. There were some people that complained about their rooms, but ours was fine, we did have a problem with the TV and taps in one of the rooms but they soon fixed that.

We tried all 4 ala Carte restaurants and the best was Mexican, the other were alright, it made a change from eating in the buffet restaurant. The resort it self is about one hours drive from the airport it was a very interesting drive lots to see on the way so we were not bored even though we had just got off a 9 hour flight. Rooms were allocated on the bus ride and we were given our AI bracelets.

The staff there are very friendly and they do try their best and accommodate your wishes. On arrival we were greeted by the Bahia Principe dance team and were given cold drinks, we were expecting a room with sea view as I had asked for this when booking, room was not sea view so we asked to be upgraded to the Hacienda but there is not that much difference in the accommodation only price, it did have its own little restaurant, 10 minutes free internet access, towel were available from the Hacienda reception and it had a little pool, we found we only used the restaurant for breakfast all the other times we were on main site. There is a SPA there my husband went and had a massage (recommend this) then we went into the Jacuzzi (very nice).

We went on 4 excursions, first was the Monster truck, had to travel back to Puerto Plata (1 hr journey, big truck takes you up in the mountains, through rivers, had a typical Dominican lunch and end off swimming in the river WELL WICKED.

Do take some candy (sweets), pens, and pencils for the children that you will meet during the trip. Second trip was to Ocean World (Puerto Plata again 1.5 hr journey) where you can swim with the dolphins, they kiss you, you can hug them and dance with them (my 9 yr old daughter loved this experience and the sea lion show was good). The tour rep even bought us some sugar cane on our journey back. Third trip was the Laguna Jeep Safari we covered the area of Rio San Juan where we were staying, went up in the mountains saw a Catholic Church, spent one hour on a white sand blue sea beach then went swimming in a BLUE LAKE in some caves (WICKED the water was a lovely deep blue and there were fishes in there, then went on and saw some kids jumping of a waterfall, again take some sweets for the children.

You need to make sure you have enough sweets for the start and end of your journey, you will be surprised how many kids there are asking for 'MINTO's' (Sweets). Last trip was to Paradise Island (3 hr journey from our hotel, well worth it though), went on a 45 min speedboat ride (my 7 yr old son really enjoyed this) to this lovely white sand beach in the middle of the sea, went snorkelling and this was by far the best part of our holiday, seeing all the lovely fish, our kids had a wonderful time and this was the first time they had ever done snorkelling.

The shows were good there was a kids show for one hour then the adults show, the hall was always packed full of people. The staff there always greeted you with a smile and 'HOLA' (hello), the rooms were cleaned daily and the mini bar was well stocked up and you could always ask for more.

The main pool did get dirty later on in the day but there was always someone about trying to keep it clean, there are some birds that fly over and around the pool so beware of bird poo!

We did get a few bites (all can be counted on one hand) from the sand flies and mosquitoes but what do you expect you are in the Caribbean.

Overall we loved this holiday and would definitely go again. There were some people there who had been there 3 or 4 times before. I don’t blame them, this place is well wicked for all age groups, families, singles. Staff are helpful and friendly.

" We just returned from the Bahia... "

We just returned from the Bahia Principe San Juan. We were there from December 31 to January 7th.This was our third trip to the Dominican Republic but our first to Puerto Plata. We’ve been to Punta Cana, La Romana, Cayo Coco, Cayo Largo and Puerto Vallarta. We’ve never complained about any of the other places that we have stayed at. This by far was the worst place we have been to.

ARRIVAL

We received our AI bracelets, map of the resort and room key on the bus, which was excellent because we did not waste any time waiting in line upon arrival. When we got off the bus we did not get a drink or a musical welcome. We went to reception to purchase the room safe, waited a few minutes and were told to come back later. We found our room, waited for our luggage, had dinner and then returned to reception to get our safe key. The woman at the desk still hadn’t found the right form. We waited a few more minutes and then purchased our room safe for $28 US. We found the people at the front desk disorganized and unfriendly.

THE ROOM

We stayed in room 2105 (E-I section - Golden Club section), which was located close to the beach, buffet restaurant and two pools. The room furnishing was satisfactory but definitely not something that you would expect to see at a 4+ star hotel. Some bugs and spiders did get in but that is to be expected. The mini bar was not stocked daily although we called the front desk on many occasions. We had to ask for beach towels and umbrella for two days although they were suppose to be placed in our room upon arrival.

THE RESORT

The resort property is huge. 649 rooms in the BP, 136 in the Club Hacienda and 156 in the Club Golden Principe. The resort is surrounded by lush tropical vegetation. Very beautiful. The only issue that I had was with the lack of lights after 11pm. It was difficult to walk in the dark without tripping over something or slipping.

THE BEACH

What beach? I wouldn’t call it a beach. If you have seen Lake Ontario than just add a few palm trees and you have the same beach that is at the BPSJ. The sand is dark grey/black. The water is dark and murky. The sand is infested with sand flies/fleas. There is a creek on the west and east side of the resort that flows into the ocean. If you see what is behind the palm tree leave fence that surrounds the hotel and the garbage dump that is across the street you can only imagine what flows into the ocean.

THE POOLS

The smaller pools were clean but the main pool was crowded and very dirty. It should be repainted, cleaned more often and tiled.

THE FOOD

There are four a-la-carte restaurants (Mexican - okay, Mediterranean - very good, Italian - okay and Seafood) and one large buffet restaurant. We tried to book our a-la-carte dinners the night that we arrived but were told to come back the next day. We tried to make reservations at 9:30am the next morning and were told that the Seafood restaurant was unavailable all week because it was fully booked. The buffet restaurant was pretty good, but nothing special for a 4+ star hotel. The only night that I would say the food was 4+ star qualities was New Years Eve.

THE BARS

The service was too slow. The drinks were watered down. The beer tasted like vinegar. The fruit drinks were slushy type drinks.

ENTERTAINMENT

The show at 10pm was okay, but I have seen better shows in other resorts. The Pueblo Principe (entrance to the hotel) was a great idea. The live band, karaoke bar, disco and casino were a lot of fun. Drinks are supposed to be included on the street except in the casino. They ask you your room number and say that you will not be charged, however, upon check-out we were charged 375 pesos for drinks that we had on the street. We refused to pay for a few beers and pina coladas. We argued with the woman in charge of the Golden Club for over 20 minutes. She was very rude so we complained to our Air Transat representative and she took care of it. Be careful because many people that we talked to had been charged for things they weren’t suppose to be charged for.

BUGS

We were eaten alive. Deep woods off did nothing to protect us from the bugs. I counted 27 painful bites on one leg. Fortunately, we did not get bitten as much as other people who ended up going to the doctor to get medication and shots. Some people complained not only about mosquitoes and sand flies/fleas on the beach but also bed bugs. By looking at people’s legs and arms one could see that the majority of people at the resort were covered in bites.

SHOPPING

The shops on the strip are much more expensive than the shops at the airport.

WEATHER

Rain, rain and more rain and a small earthquake.

I would strongly recommend that people STAY AWAY from this resort. It is in no way shape or form at 4+ star resort. It shouldn’t be rated more than a 3 star. The resort is infested with bugs, the beach is nasty, and half of the staff is rude and unfriendly. If you are planning a trip to the Dominican Republic I would suggest that you look into staying at a 4 star resort in Punta Cana. I stayed at the Grand Paradise Bavaro and it was 100 times better than the Bahia Principe San Juan.

" Hotel was excellent for all ages,... "

Hotel was excellent for all ages, especially for kids. Made to feel very welcome. Hotel is very clean, bed linen and towels changed daily. Good variety of food. Nightly entertainment is good - the nightly show starts around 10pm and last for 1 hour. Have games in the pool daily. Beach is lovely. This hotel is a winner- you wont be disappointed. Shops, hairdressers, bars, disco, telephones, Internet, all on site. Waiters /Waitresses are friendly constantly topping up your drinks. Had a few cloudy days in July 2004 and a few rainstorms lasting about 1 hour. Then sunshines again, would recommend the OUTBACK SAFARI trip.... Also the snorkelling trip they sell on the beach for 25 USD. This is well worth the money. If kids are getting the hair breads go to the hairdressers on site as the people on the beach trying to sell it cheaper are not that good, braids don’t last very long....

" In terms of the hotel It was... "

In terms of the hotel It was brilliant I could not fault it at all. The staff bent over backwoods to provide everything. They could have hired more staff at the pub showing the Euro 2004 games but a minor fault in an other wise perfect resort.

The only downside came from Airtours or coco travel the coach broke down on the way back there was no organisation one of the Airtours reps who was going to catch a plane as well got on a taxi and left us this made maters worse as she was the only one who was fully fluent in Spanish and English. this lead to lots of confusion when we asked why she got a taxi the reply was ‘she has a plane to catch’ (and we didn’t). We eventually did get a taxi but only after some arguments. Having said that it would not stop me going to Bahia Principe as the hotel was excellent and I would recommend it to anyone.
