Settle into the Spanish routine as soon as you arrive. A room with shutters and air conditioning is recommended. Use them from 2 o’clock to 5. Take a break, take a siesta. You’ll need it. Night life extends into the wee small hours even in August.
Some smaller shops will be shut for the month of August but for the larger shops it will be business as usual. I would recommend FNAC for books and DVDs. El Corte Ingles for just about everything.
Get an overview of the city with the bus tour. You’ll find it tidy, graffiti-less and easy to navigate by foot or metro. If you are keen on museums or art galleries the Prado and Reina Sofia are musts.
A little Spanish is useful. Not everyone habla ingles. The food is great and knowledge of some Spanish will help you through the menus.
All in all, a great destination for a long weekend, a week or to return to time after time.
