The trip from the airports (Chania of Herlakion) is a long one but for all the time it takes, it is worth it. The final descent from the mountains on the Chora Sfakia road has to be experienced. Words are simply inadequate as the view is incredible.
The grounds of the hotel are spacious and immaculate. Nothing is out of place, ever. There are some intersting "plantings" for those who appreciate shrubs and trees, these too are well cared for.
There is a main hotel block with rooms either overlooking the sea or the mountains. The sea view attracts a premium as you'd expect. The layout is typical hotel and pretty standard, there is a definite Greek feel to the accommodation, it's clean and simple. No TV's here.
The bungalows are much more spacious and they have a sofa with table and chairs etc. as well as a useful private terrace overlooking the sea.
The food. The half board deal is good. The food is simple and freshly prepared on the premises and you would be hard put to find nothing you liked. The only thing we didn't enjoy was the breakfast orange juice, hopefully that will get resolved but it is by no means a show stopper. The pool bar is very good. Mr Manolis is most obliging.
The pool. Big, clean and unheated. The lack of heat isn't really a problem from mid may onwards. There is also a children’s pool. Sun beds are readily available and there are areas of shade there from palm trees and umbrellas
The staff. In all the hotels in all the world that we have visited, and there have been hundreds, we have never, ever found friendlier, helpful staff such as this hotel has. They are a priceless asset. From the cleaners to the management and everyone in between - brilliant!
The beaches. These are a bit stony but very good from a naturist point of view being quiet and sheltered. The main beach features a hotel bar and sun beds, there are to other beaches nearby, in easy walking distance, which are even quieter.
What to Do. The area is quiet and peaceful, if you like Torremolinos or Playa Del Ingles, this place is not for you. There are some wonderful walks to be had, good exercise climbing up and down the plentiful gorges that run north/south throughout Crete. Loads of historical sites to visit from the Minoan age onwards. The local tavernas are always good value for money, especially the fish dishes.
Would we recommend the place? Yes, but it is very peaceful - not a disco for miles - heaven.
