Having just stayed at the Vila Petra for a week on 10 march 2007 I can do nothing but praise this accommodation. HAving been a travel agent for over 10 years my expectations are pretty high and I have travelled to many places. The Vila Petra has got to be the best self catering accommodation I have ever stayed in. We had a studio and could not believe the size of the room, the kitchen was not a little poky thing it was fully fitted and very new included a microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker and all the untesils you can think of. The rooms were cleaned every day to a very high standard. The weather was extemely good for the time of year 22 degrees every day and not a cloud in the sky! The pool area and the facilities are fantastis including an indoor pool. The staff were all very friendly and happy to teach us a bit of Portuguese. We did not eat in the hotel restaurant so could not comment on the food but it seemed a little pricey. We ate at FARNEL'S which is just down the strip 'it was a recommendation' on looking at the place it looks a little like a shaby cafe but the food is very good and resonable priced, unlike FREDI's which is 100 meter away and charge's 3 times the price for a prawn cocktail....that FARNELL's do just as good. Another great place to eat was the 'AMERICAN DINER' which is close to the apartments the staff were friendly and the food portions are 'AMERICAN SIZE....HUGE!!! Paradise is also a resonable priced restaurant, bit more english on the menu if that's your thing. We hired a car which I would recommend as the ALGARVE is very pretty. We went to some very Portuguese towns were the mode of transport is still a 'donkey & cart'. Make sure you buy some ORANGES from the local roadside people they are the best you will ever taste 3kg for between 1.50 - 3.00 euros. Although we went out of season when 'the strip' is a little quieter it would even be a good location in busy times as the accommodation is just off the strip in a quiet little side road. The beach was about 15 minutes walk away but be prepared on the way back to trek up 'cardiac hill'. The accommodation do run a courtesey bus though in peak season. The beach was a lovely golden beach not huge so could get busy in peak season. We had a FANTASTIC time at the hotel and would definetly reccommend this place for couples, familes and more mature traveller's.
What a week!

Unfortunately we went to the Algarve during the half term week. It was not overly busy, but the weather was incliment. During the whole week we had approx 7 hours of sun-not exactly what we had hoped for! I can only advise car hire for this resort. The shops were the usual tacky souvenir type places with some expensive supermarkets there also. We walked the 40 min trek to Albufeira twice, which was quite nice to visit but very touristy. i know the Algarve is full of some pretty places to visit, so you would do well to hire a car. The apartments were situated off of "The Strip" and the blocks were quite attractive to look at...one of the nicest in the area. The public areas were smart and spottlessly clean. The gardens were beautiful and we would liked to have overlooked this although you would get a bit of noise from the evening entertainment. From experience it was bingo, quizzes and an awful dj playing music from about 15 years ago! Having said that, i would recommend asking for a room overlooking the gardens. Our 2 bed apartment overlooked the street and we suffered noise from waste collections and delivery drivers at 6am. Ok if you are early risers...but we are not! The apartment was spotless, well equipped but rather stark. The 2nd bedroom being an internal room had no window which was a little gloomy (also no air con unit). Unfortunately we were burgled whilst sleeping here, the intruder forced open the door leading to balcony. Be warned they open from both sides! We had little support from the hotel staff and no joy with our complaint to the travel operator. I won't be travelling with this particular operator again. All in all, the hotel was clean and tidy. The facilities were good (except expensive indoor pool) and it was family friendly. please ask for a garden view though and always lock away any valuables. i hope you find this review helpful
Worth a stay! Highly recommended!

I booked a stay at the Vila Petra for a week. We went last week and were impressed with the accomodation. I booked a 1 bedroom apartment for myself, partner and his 15 year old son. When we arrived we were told that there had been an error and we would unfortunately be in a studio for the night but in the morning for the rest of our stay we would have a two bedroom apartment at no extra cost. The studio was quite big, having two twin beds in living area plus sofa, table, dining table, kitchen, bathroom and balcony. seeing that I couldn't wait to see what the 2 bedroom apartment was like... wow we had twice the living space, bathroom kitchen balcony, two bedrooms which ours had its own en-suite and balcony. The kitchen supplies/appliances were great, we did get a new kettle and toaster as the ones we had were broken and we ended up setting off fire alarms as we burnt toast but hey. Pool are and grounds were lovely and the boys enjoyed playing tennis and squash which was not over priced either. Shop was convenient and laundrette supplied soap and conditioner. We were on the ground floor near reception and I do agree with some previous reviews you can hear footsteps as area is all tiled, but we were near bar so it is expected to have a bit of noise but I was impressed on how little there was. I would recommend that when you are in your rooms that you lock the door. They are not electrical like most hotels and you need to double lock them when you leave. We left ours unlocked whilst in room first few days and ended up having children walk in as they had the wrong room. Bless. But overall I think the hotel was fab, we didn't think much of the strip or the food in the area, but he weren't on a holiday for drinking and staying out all night we wanted to relax. Food wise I would recommend ARiuna on fishermans beach quite pricey for the three of us including drinks came to 127 euros but you pick your own fish and they cook it on an open grill where you can watch if you like. Well I have babbled on quite a bit now. Stay at Villa Petra you will have a great time!
Great!

Just come back from a great holiday at Villa petra Aparthotel with freinds. The people there are great there and very welcoming. The room we stayed in which was a single bedroom apartment could easily sleep four in. The cleaners are good but only seem to change covers on the beds but not really any thing else in the kitchen or dining area. The location of Villa Petra is excellent with a short walk to the lively area of the strip. This mile long road is perfect for a variety of nice crusines at night and a nice drink after in a bar with the family. Then why not travel down further to the bottom end of the strip were there is a lot of bar/discos to choose from and good music played. The strip starts to get a bit busyer from 12 o clock onwards were the street fills and is very lively. Also i would consider taking a trip to the old town from the train/bus station which costs 3 euros for a day ticket! The journey only takes about ten minutes on the bus. The old town has a great beach with many things going on there including great watersports. I would also recomend goin the two waterparks which are named Slide and Splash and Aqualand the reps say it takes 20 minutes but really it takes about a hour with all the stops they have to make so dont be fooled by them! Altogether i definatly would consider going if you have a family with teenagers! The location, hotel and cleanliness are all five star in my books!
Excellent accommodation, shame about the location

We have just returned from a 14 day holiday with three children in the Vila Petra. We had a 2 bedroom apartment, which was extremely spacious and clean, and had everything you could need. The pool area is good, but does not have enough sunbeds to cater for everyone who wants one. Get down to the pool before 10am! The gym was disappointing with cheap equipment. The hotel is quiet in terms of entertainment (we were not looking for wild nights, but something for the children during the day, and perhaps something other than sad karaoke in the bar in the evening). The apartments are located on a side road at the top end of the Strip, which is extremely tacky, and lacking in decent restaurants. The Martinique restaurant (turn right at the end of the side road) is the ONLY one worth visiting. Albufeira Old Town is slightly better for food etc, but is really packed at night and you won't get a taxi back within an hour for love nor money. We booked a day to Aqualand, and what should have been a 20 minute bus journey took well over an hour, as the bus stopped all along the route to pick up one or two people. We did hire a car and went further west to Carvoeiro and Silves, which were worth seeing. If I could pick up Vila Petra and put it somewhere else, I would go back, but the Strip? No way.
Enjoyed our stay at the Vila Petra

Have just arrived home from a 11 day stay at the Vila Petra, we really loved it. We had a very clean and spacious 1 bedroom apartment which had a separate kitchen which was very well equipped with everything you need even a diswasher, full oven and hob! Our room over looked the pool and the sea in the distance. There was a small supermarket on site which was basic but more or less stocked everything you needed. The food in the snack bar was very good. The pool area was clean although didn't seem big enough for the size of the complex but we never had a problem getting a sunbed chose whatever the time of day. We would highley recommend this accomodation as it was central for everything, if you turned left out of the hotel (at the end of the road ahead) you could walk down to the main strip area and if you turned right you were at the Montechoro end of the strip, this is were the Montechoro Park was, which housed a 18 hole crazy golf course (the kids loved this), water chutes which weren't open but looked like they were being renovated. There was also various restuarants, italian (Puccini on the Park) which was excellent they did Pasta, Pizza's and a steak which came on a sizziling platter which you cooked yourself to how you like it! Also there was a steak house, indian restaurant and various irish bars. The Caberet Club is well worth a visit, it's a family show every night except Saturday's (adults only), and the line up is Billy Pearce, Keith Harris who is joined by Cuddles the Monkey and Orville the Duck - very entertaining indeed we never stop laughing from start to finish, and inbetween these guys coming on the stage there was a singer on called Sarah Grodentz and dancers. After the show you can visit the Backstage Bar were you can get to meet the stars and there is additional entertainment on. The other resturant which is worth a mention is Wild & Co, this is right at the end of the strip near the beach, we had two meals here and both were spot on, although the later you go the longer the wait for either a table or your food.
Cleanest Hotel I have seen in awhile
from outbax
Loved the hotel, location on the strip may be tacky for some but is convenient for shopping and eating. Does not fel like your in Portugal in the strip area. Went in the off season so comments may not reflect same in high season. Staff were exceptional(except pool staff). Had to be one of the cleanest hotels I have ever seen. Maid service like I have never seen, even washed all our dishes!! Liked the fact it was tucked nicely on a side street from the main strip area. Kitchen had all possible utensils and equipment you could require and were mostly new.

This hotel was one of the cleanest hotels I have ever stayed in.The maid who cleaned spent at least 30 minutes on each room.I came back to look for her to give her a tip as it was my last day and I hadn't seen her all week. When I caught up with her she was cleaning our room. She didn't know I was outside waiting.Twenty minutes later she came out, vacuum, mop etc.The location is excellent,200 yards from the bars and restaurants but quiet. The equipment was more than adequate,tv with bbc and itv plus cnn,sky news etc.The kitchen had everything including a dishwasher, micro. The apartment was a 1 bedroom for 2 and was really spacious. The kitchen was a separate room not stuck on the end of the lounge. The room layout is good and in the annex we stayed the balconies are offset with greater privacy. The reception service very efficient and courteous, nothing too much trouble.I WOULD GO BACK WITHOUT HESITATION.R.SOUTHERN, WIRRAL
Good Hotel, Lousy Town

Stayed in Late May/early June 2005 with my wife and 18 month old son. Had a self-catered one bedroom that was very big. Simple but new furniture. Kitchen very well stocked. Pool and premises were top notch. Staff was very accomodating, though a bit standoffish. I had booked directly (not part of a tour group) so I was left to fend for myself a bit vis-a-vis golf etc... Weather was perfect. All in all a good place. Not the bad part. Unfortunately the Vila Petra is located in the middle of Montechero, by far the worst spot that I saw in the whole of the Algarve. May as well as have been Blackpool. I had read about The Strip (which was meters away, but not at all noisy strangely), but even I was taken back by the degree of British/Irish kitsch (and I've lived in the UK). Pubs serving british "specialities" and showing Eastenders as far as the eye can see. The Irish monstronsity at the top of the Strip was almost beyond belief. Not a single decent restaurant, though there are dozens. Albufeira Town (about a mile away) wasn't much better. Lagos seemd much more interesting. We managed to drive away to other parts of the Algarve. We had fun at the Felisia and Sao Rafael beaches. Golf was great too. So long as we got away from the Strip, things were great.
No Sleep Possible at Vila Petra
from Popintops
If your idea of a holiday is to drink lots of alcohol and sing along to karaoke until the early hours of the morning, and then spend the following day sleeping off the nights excesses by a pool then this sure is the hotel and resort for you. Unfortunately, this was not our intended activity schedule for 5 days in the Algrave and hence we were very disappointed by the Vila Petra. Albufeira itself is the most hideous overdeveloped resort imaginable with tacky gift shops, Brits Bars, Snooker Halls and Strip Clubs. It has absolutely no character and resembles a sort of downmarket cross between Blackpool and Las Vegas. The Vila Petra is located in the middle of the urban sprawl that is the mass of high rise hotels and apartments, it has no view other than of the surrounding buildings. The apartment complex was all very clean and the apartment design was excellent, spacious bedrooms and lounge area, well equiped kitchen, good bathroom and excellent storage, BUT this is evidently a low cost build because there was no consideration for IMPACT noise in its design i.e. every step or movement in the hall, on the stairs, or from the surrounding rooms reverberated throughout our bedrooms. We could even hear people peeing and then flushing their toilets! This, combined with the horrendous noise from the revellers in the bar every night until the early hours meant we got very little sleep and are now glad to be home! There are some other issues that I should report regarding this hotel, which I really can not understand can be classified as 4 star (the other reviewers who have praised it are clearly not familiar with the usual standard of a 4 star). Firstly, the only item included in the price was a small bar of soap! We were expected to pay extra for towels, saunas, safe deposit box etc. The TV, of adequate proportions, stopped working on our first night and was then replaced by a tiny portable that was so samll it made my eyes ache. The gym was a tiny room with about 10 pieces of equipment, half of which did not work, and was only really big enough for one person to use at a time. The indoor pool was best described as a puddle (c. 4 m x 8 m) and tasted totally disgusting because, instead of chlorine, they had used some kind of salt which was a most unpleasant swimming experience. We only ate in the restaurant on one occasion because the soup to start was most definitely from a tin and the main course was a piece of fish over boiled in water that tasted of salt and not fish, two small over cooked potatoes and some sad red cabbage. I didn't eat much of it but was very sick afterwards. We now wish we had stayed in Faro which was a very interesting historical place and had fab shops and cafes. The other good places we found were: Lagos, it's worth doing the boat trip round the coast there to see the rock formations; Monchique, high up in the mountains from where there are spectacular views over the Algarve region; and the fort at Sagres is well worth a visit for the views, history etc. My conclusion: AVOID Albufeira and the Vila Petra!
