Aug 2004, Mrs A Allen

Just returned - this hotel is not 4 Star.... BEWARE some rooms are refurbished some are not - we booked 4* accommodation with this company Sunstar at the Serita Beach Hotel and had to move as accommodation poor and not the family room we had booked (twin room for two adults, two children and a baby !!!- moved to Rinela Beach - which is a good quality hotel food wise etc but our room was of extremely poor quality - damp in bathroom - Blocked bath , blocked sink, very dirty cot provided, air conditioning you couldn’t use because outdated and v noisy and rotten wood on the balcony when we had baby !!! More like 2 * accommodation.
Also kids club not safe and not checking in or security for children, need I go on....
Would not recommend you book with this COMPANY SUNSTAR LEISURE as response to our complaints was v poor. Had to liase with UK in the end........

The star rating is applicable to this...
9 / 10
Aug 2004, Keziahjane

The star rating is applicable to this hotel in every respect except for the accommodation. I appreciate that you are not usually in the room for long but...maintenance is clearly not a priority and the very basic beds take a bit of getting used to.
Consequently, my overall rating is only 9 out of 10.

We were a party of three, me + husband + son (10yrs).
The food was excellent - very cosmopolitan with an amazing choice at every meal. Three restaurants are available although the Chinese and Taverna need to be booked in advance. We only went in the Taverna once because having expected something different than in the Main restaurant, we were somewhat disappointed to discover that the food in the Taverna was essentially no different, except there being less choice than in the Main restaurant.
Chinese food is not really to our taste so we gave that a miss.
All staff, are courteous, very efficient and for the most part very very friendly, particularly if you honour them by attempting to learn some of the language. Most of them for their part, speak a considerable number of languages.
The animation team work very very hard. Although I am more than happy to give 'organised' entertainment a miss, my son thought the evening shows were 'wicked', so he was quite happy(and preferred) to go on his own.
Despite the number of people at the hotel in August, it was always possible to get pedalos, canoes etc (free) or sliders, jet skis etc (for small charge) from the beach.
To be sure of lounges and sunshades you need to be on the beach or beside the pool(s) real early. Many ensure their territory by the placing of towels etc before going to breakfast..
This may not be an issue if travelling outside school holiday periods.
Most brochures advise that 'occasional' aircraft noise may be experienced. Kokkini Hani is only just east of the main airport of Heraklion. Consequently, there is frequent aircraft activity overhead. We did not find the noise obtrusive and enjoyed watching the planes.
Kokkini Hani is a good base for getting about, either by car (take your pick of the car hire firms along the street outside the hotel) or by bus. Bus travel is cheap and takes you to most places in relative comfort. No old rattly buses here, the majority are all air conditioned coaches.
Heraklion is great for exploring but beware of prices in the market - most souvenir type goods can be bought cheaper in Kokkini Hani.
If we return to Crete, I would definitely choose to stay at Rinella.

Just got back from three fantastic...
9 / 10
Jul 2004, Mr S Lewis

Just got back from three fantastic weeks at Rinella Beach.
Party consisted of myself, the wife and three kids (7, 9 and 13) and thought I’d better tell others about our time there so
Break it down:
No it’s not a five star but, it does not pretend to be so, for all those who need it broken down, here goes.
Rooms: clean and range from 3 – 4 star according to which room you get, big plus point with all the rooms is they all have VERY GOOD individual air condition which was a must.
Food: VERY VERY good but, if you like your meat and two veg and are used to your Sunday roast you may be disappointed. The food is vary varied and fresh but reflects more of a European theme including (surprise, surprise) a Greek theme
Restaurant/s: There are three restaurants, main one, Chinese and a Taverna over looking the beach (the later two you need to book for, but still all inclusive) and the quality is good through out. You do get queues for the main restaurant but average is 10 -15 mins at busy time (I’ve had to queue longer at the post office)
Swimming pools: Clean and well maintained and if you really want to know, they are salt water (for those of you who have not swum in a salt water pool, you can easily float on your back and go to sleep!)
Animation/entertainment: These guys can be a bit pushy but once they know your not interested (or boring) they will leave you alone but, if you have kids then they will be entertained all the time and lets face it, your on holiday, let your hair down.
Bars: There are bars everywhere you look i.e.; poolside, indoors and on the beach and the beer and local spirits are good quality and large measures. Certain times of day you are waited on for drinks and at other times you walk to the bar to order.
Staff/attitude: really depends on the way you treat them and what your expectations are. If your one of these people who thinks you have paid to have people grovel to you then spend your money elsewhere. The staff here are courteous and polite although the reception staff can be a little bit abrupt at times (it was the peak season).
Other: let’s forget about the Jet Skis, Parascending, Jet skiing which seem to have been omitted (all at a small nominal charge) and Pedaloes, Canoes etc etc which are free/inclusive (some one forget to mention these). A very private beach and so on.
Summary: If you want to relax, you can, if you want to be entertained you will be, although you may have to get out of your seat occasionally to be a part of things.
This is not a hotel in the States, or a far away exotic place, its in Crete and surprise surprise, there are Greek people/staff there who are not British (strange that!)
Look at the positive reviews on this and other sites and make your mind up but as one reviewer has implied, we would rather you don’t go as I, like him, would like to keep it all to myself.
If you are typically British and prefer a typically British holiday abroad then go to Spain where you can have bacon for breakfast and the staff will grovel to “engleesh person”.
If you want a comfortable base you are looked after and if wish to explore the culture you can (the staff will organise a hamper/picnic for you FREE).
I personally, along with my family WILL be going back.

RINELLA BEACH HOTEL Wonderful 2 weeks...
10 / 10
Jun 2004, Miss J Callow

RINELLA BEACH HOTEL
Wonderful 2 weeks here, my children aged 13 and 11 and myself had the best holiday ever.
ANIMATION TEAM:
We will not forget them, they made our holiday and deserve an award for the amount of time they give to their job, they worked tirelessly to make our holiday great and we have made lifelong friends in the process. Thanks to Mimo, Magda, Yani, Alex, Emmanuelle, Katka etc.
MEALS:
Great selection, all freshly cooked, i actually lost weight through eating good food.
STAFF:
George made our holiday in the piano bar with his wonderful smile and manners. Niko, one of the hotel managers was always on hand to make sure your holiday went well.
ROOMS:
A little basic for 4 star hotel, it didn't affect our holiday but the rooms could have been better.
All in all a great place to go for lots of fun and laughter, many nationalities.

Went to this hotel for two weeks from...
9 / 10
Apr 2004, TRAVELLER

Went to this hotel for two weeks from 20th April booking through Sun Star. First points about this hotel, if you have trouble walking or cannot handle steps very well, don’t book here. The majority of the rooms are away from the main hotel and you need to climb several sets of steps to go to the restaurant, reception and bars etc. All the toilets are down two long flights of stairs and there are none on the same level as the bars, pools etc.
FOOD: The food at this hotel is very very good, with a huge range to choose from although the only thing we missed was bacon at breakfast time (saw it once only during our stay). On one occasion, her that must be obeyed asked the restaurant manager (Kostos) if there was any chance of some lamb chops and low and behold fifteen minutes later, he bought some to our table. We can honestly say that the attitude and standards shown toward us from the restaurant management was the best we have ever had. Whilst the food selection is wide and varied, if your used to typically British fare or fast food, you may be disappointed. There is a good range of drinks, nothing special but varied.
Word of warning re drinks: If you over indulge too much and become a problem, the management will stop serving you or your party for a “drying out period”
ANIMATION/ENTERTAINMENT: If you have kids they are always kept busy by the Animation team day and night, with a mixture of games and in the evening there is a good mixture of family entertainment. Each member of the team is a “unique” character (Nemo will sell you the shirt off his back and Katie will entertain). At night there is a disco straight after the entertainment/show but regretfully the music played is somewhat dated or something resembling “Greek” rave/house music, which is fine if you have not reached puberty but not if you seriously want some decent European/commercial chart stuff new and from the last ten years across the board. End of the day, these guys work hard and you would be a very sad person if you did not join in even if you feel or are, older than God. The most “willing” animation team we have come across anywhere.
ACCOMMODATION/ROOMS: This is an area of let down, as whilst the majority of the rooms are clean and tidy, the standard and decor does vary according to which room you have and as previously stated they are all a walk away from the main facilities. We changed rooms a couple of times and opted for one in the main building (up two long flights of stairs) although reception did not want us to consider this initially as it was above the disco but, as we were in the disco or out and about until late, it had always finished by the time we retired. Good views from these particular rooms. The TV’s pick up French, German and Greek TV but only BBC news for English speaking. No film or music channels. The radio in the room is permanently tuned into some obscure Greek station. Minor point in the bathrooms, there is nowhere to hook the shower attachment.
MISCELANEOUS: Car hire. There is a car hire place in the hotel that is reasonable on the bog standard small car but over priced on mid to luxury/specialist cars. We always try to hire a convertible but here is almost double the price of anywhere else we have been. There are a host of car hire places along the road outside of the hotel so shop around. Watch out for the hidden extras and make sure the insurance covers every thing. Take care when driving out here as, having driven all over the world, Crete is the most likely place for you to have a bump as the standard of driving is worse than that of central Paris and all of Italy.
OUT AND ABOUT: The whole island is full of archaeological sites and monastery’s every few kilometres and around twenty Euros will get you somewhere where this is some nightlife, or there is a bar opposite the hotel which is open “till late” which does not rip you off on drink prices however the underlying Greek/non European rave music is present here as well (seems to be the trend in the vicinity of this hotel). A group of us did wonder if they share the same CD collection with the hotel. Don’t bother with the “Greek village evening excursion” it’s over priced and not worth it.
SUN BED’S: No problems with reserving beds as there are enough to go round both at the pool side and on the beach where the is a good choice of reasonably priced water sports (not all free as you would expect from five star all inclusive).
The hotel appears to have a huge influx of French people, more than anywhere else we have been and a group of us did find them abusive until they discovered we spoke their language. In reality this is not unique to the French or indeed this hotel but it is rather prevalent here.
DRINKS/WAITER SERVICE: In the evening you are served at your table/seat and we did find that we were having to wait a while before getting our drinks although this was speeded up by tipping the waiter at the beginning of you holiday (find out which section Maria is serving and tip her as she out performed everyone else).
SUMMARY: Is it worthy of the coveted five star label? NO. The restaurant staff and management gets the five stars and the food just get the five stars. The Animation team, five stars for enthusiasm but three to four for limited variety/quality on the evening shows (not their fault, we are lead to believe) the overall facilities and accommodation gets a three to four star. We visited a few other hotels, which were rated lower than five star, and the facilities were a lot better. Would we book here again? YES, we are going this again in June.
