Apartment was vast, quiet and quite comfortable. Kitchen modestly equipped. The public areas are huge and there is a restaurant in the adjoining sister hotel which served an excellent breakfast, reasonably priced. We found the staff helpful, particularly when we needed to... more

We've just come back from what will definitely be our last visit to the Balaia Plaza. The hotel has really gone downhill. In the past we have received great service at this hotel, but not on this occasion. The receptionist when we booked in was unbelievably rude - not... more

I visited the Algarve at the end of September with my boyfriend. The apartment was huge, with everything we needed, it was kept clean with clean bed linen and towels every other day. The pool area was lovely, we never had a problem getting sunbeds, and the poolside snack... more

I have just returned from a week at the Balaia Plaza and I must say I didn’t want to come home. We were a party of 7 with a wide age range of 71, 68, 33, 31, 16, 9, 8 and we all enjoyed the holiday the same. The apartment was very large and clean, it had everything you... more

Stayed at the Balaia Plaza for a week self catering. This is the best hotel I have stayed in on a package holiday. The rooms are huge and the facilities are very good in the room. You get hairdryer along with clean towels daily. No shortage of hot water for showers etc. The... more

Just got back from Balaia Plaza and I must say that it was a very nice hotel with massive rooms, however its quite a slog to the strip about a 20 min walk down a hill and up a bigger one. We tried to book a taxi but were told we had to wait 2 hours. We walked to the strip... more

This was our first visit to Portugal and generally overall was impressed with the hotel. Reception staff were friendly and helpful especially Sandra. On site shop well stocked and obviously the things that Brits abroad seem to want to buy like Kellogs cornflakes, Heinz... more

Great hotel- really big apartments, clean pool, air conditioning, friendly staff- happy days! It is quite far from the strip, but that's okay if you're a family and you just want to be by the beach and away from the tacky area! My boyfriend and I spent most days at the... more

We are a young couple and we just got back on Saturday from a week in Balaia Plaza and we loved it! The apartments were lovely (although maybe not a 4* - the bathroom was a bit brown where it should be white!) but the place was great. The old town is good and the "Strip"... more

Even the fairly bad location was worth it!!!
We arrived back last Thursay, and i have seen the pictures of our holiday and it makes me feel gutted to be home! I must admit the location was not the best- especially when you are walking in flip flops for the first time this year! The first week we found it was easy to get a taxi, but because of the peak season coming, the second week we were not so lucky. All the staff were friendly, especially the South African girl behind the reception, and the waiter in the resturante next door. The beer in Portugal is not too bad, if you choose to drink imported drinks you do spend quite a bit more. The pool was nice and cool, but i found there was not much to do for families hanging round there. The rooms were amazing, i have never seen such big rooms.
Balaia Plaza pleases...mostly.
My wife and I spent a week in the Balaia Plaza in mid June 05. This is our opinion of the holiday. Accommodation: We deliberately paid a bit more to have plenty of room, two of us in an apartment for four, and indeed it was generously spacious with good sized balcony. The kitchen was well equipped and all appliances appeared new. Bedding and curtains were also clean and fairly new. However the furniture, chairs, sofas tables etc were a disgrace for a four star establishment, stained, and in the case of two dining chairs, broken. The bathroom was fine if a bit dated, but everything worked ok. The apartment was well cleaned on six of the seven days. Air con worked well and was relatively quiet for a change. Facilities: There is a very good, well stocked supermarket on site. The pool is good and the pool bar serves an adequate if limited range of snacks. There are plenty of sun beds but not nearly enough umbrellas. We did not make use of the gym or indoor pool as the weather was too good throughout, so I cannot comment on those. All staff we encountered, reception, bars etc were extremely pleasant and helpful. I have read some comments re slow service, but we did not notice this. You’re on holiday for goodness sake. Entertainment: The entertainment is bad. No, seriously, really bad. We looked in each night on our way back from town, and, well words can’t describe. But low quality singers and karaoke is not our scene. Out and About: We thought location was great. Ten minutes walk down to a smashing beach, though a steep uphill return journey may bother some. Courtesy bus will take you into town if you fancy a different beach for a change. At night, if you like your entertainment full on in your face, then ‘The Strip’ is a fifteen minute stroll away, though only 3 or 4 euros by taxi. The Old Town, which has plenty going on, but in our opinion with much more character, is only 4 or 5 euros by taxi. Local busses (ignore the rep as usual) are modern and reliable, times on most bus stops (e.g. 2.95 euros to Vialmoora – market is on Wed and Sat, but is nothing special). We went on the ‘Historic Algarve’ trip, but not the First Choice 53 euro one, we went on a local one for 25 euros. Same itinerary, English speaking guide, very good. Leaflets in reception. (All trips have a cheaper locally organised version). Overall: Yes, overall a good choice. There were a lot of kids there even though we deliberately went in term time. A good choice for families, though I would have thought a four star would organise some daytime activities for them. We were disappointed with First Choice. At the welcome meet we were told (as usual) that busses were scarce and unreliable – not true. That the pool was cold? – not true. And the main thing that seemed to be of concern was to tell us we needed to pay 11 euros each to be sure of sitting together on our return flight, again not true. First Choice check in at Faro is chaos. We queued for over an hour - never experienced anything like it since the bad old days of twenty years ago.
