The main resturant food was abit repetative and not all warm but it still was enjoyable. The location was out of the way but only a few euros in a taxi to alberfura(spelt wrong). The beach was a night mare too far down the road and the short cut is not for the use of prams and wheel chairs, all in all i wud go back again

I have just returned from a week at the Alto De Colina/Holiday Village Algarve and have to say I am impressed and unimpressed with it. There were 7 of us in our party, myself, my partner, our 3 kids ages 12, 10 and 3 and my parents (67 and 69). On arrival at the hotel we were greeted by a few First Choice reps which was good. We arrived just after midday and our rooms were ready, situated in block 2 3rd floor and were all inclusive. They give you wristbands which are pretty useless for kids. My kids went through about 4 in the week we were there. Lovely big rooms with well equipped kitchenette, large bathroom with hairdryer and a tv in the living area and a huge balcony with sea view. The rooms are cleaned regularly and beds/towels changed every 2 days. Dont be fooled by all the paperwork in the rooms, ie 30 euros for a remote control to work the tv, we flicked through the channels and found BBC1, 2 and 3 with no need for it. The food wasnt bad but we found that it was all pretty much the same. Some days it was nice and hot, others it was warm. Breakfast was the best though and always hot. We found whilst we were there that there was always something out of order, we arrived on a Saturday and Tuesday one of the lifts broke down and wasnt fixed until Friday. There is internet access in reception, 2 euros gives you 10 minutes but once the machine is full its out of order. Happened twice in our week! We didnt really bother with the evening entertainment as my kids find it boring so cant comment. The poolside entertainment was pretty naff, in fact I only heard them once. The waterslides are quite impressive and our kids spent most of the week on them. I do agree with other reviews that they dont really suit adults as my Dad had one go and came out almost backwards complaining of banging his elbow on the way down. But hey these things are for the kids after all!!! Location wise I would say its not that good which is the main reason I have rated it 7/10. There isnt much around and its about half hour walk to the nearest beach which is ok but not the best on the Algarve. We went to the Zoomarine and my 2 elder kids and Dad swam with the dolphins. Its quite expensive but was well worth the money. We went into Albefuira by taxi and it was nice to walk around all the shops however they do all sell the same stuff so after a few its quite boring! Overall we had a good time and the kids were happy which is the main thing. For a holiday village I expected a little more, ie cashpoints on site (nearest one is Albefuira town), few more shops (1 supermarket is not enough) and maybe a chemist. The brochure is very misleading as it looks massive and believe me it isnt.

We have been back off holiday 2 weeks and we had a fantastic time. Our children ages 1 & 4 loved the water slides and the splash park, although I do agree with the other review that the blue slide is dangerous to adults, whilst we were there I witnessed one man who was knocked unconcious on it and it was another guest who dragged him out of the water as there is no lifeguard at the pool. Apart from that the hotel was lovely and clean and the food was good. There does need to be more choice but we filled in a few questionnaires while we were there and we could see more variety of food coming through before we left, so First Choice are listening. The staff at the hotel are very friendly and the entertainment team were brilliant and very professional. The flight times and transfers were brilliant with young children and the First Choice team are very accommodating. We will definitely be going back and would recommend this holiday to anyone.

The blue water slide was lethal. The 1st few days my wife went down it with our children it seemed fast. On our 4th day she tried to go down it sat up but it threw her on her back and banged her head and back. As she came round it she almost spun 90 degrees to the right then to left and again to right and as it threw her out round the bend she banged her head, knee, elbow and wrist. It almost knocked her out and her elbow and wrist looked dislocated. She is still in pain three weeks later and can hardly use her right arm. Be warned!

The hotel had no 1st aiders at poolside and First Choice didn't either and we were packed off to the local hospital. The hotel had the slide checked by the Architect?, First Choice told me it was Quality that came? Apparently it is to Standard but the water flow was apparently slowed down and the signage is to be changed to advise to only go down it sat up??? Some adults were refused entry to the slide after this. By the way my wife is only 5ft and not very large in case you were wondering. Also we witnessed many children and adults banging their heads and right sides of their bodies even after. If you are going on holiday please avoid this slide, or if you have had an accident please contact us as we really think it is dangerous and the hotel and First Choice are putting people at risk.

Went for 2weeks lovely , clean and well set out , we were in block 2 which is new so was spotlessly clean and everything new , great but no mention in broucher you then need to go up 4 sets of steps / slopes to get to main pool / entertainment and coming back on a night when they put the spinklers on its more like a water slide [ really dangerous] , thats the only water slide we did get as even late June as we left the water pumps were not fitted for the action pool area which i was assured by first choice that the pool that was not complete was the activities pool were such as water games / activities took place , kids loved the water splash park but were really disappionted with not having the water slides and ther was some digging and weilding which i suppose was bearable .

kids clubs and entertainers fantastic absolutly brilliant my children loved them all [ 7, 3 and 9months ] pools were fantastic but the whole complex is unorganised the entertainment venue is to small and if your all inclusive and at the later sitting your children miss the kids disco , bad management its a kids / family complex ! if your self catering bar snacks are basic and really expensive £12 / 15 euro`s for 2 small chips , 2 cokes , 1 juice and 2 packets of crisps , would not go all inclusive either ` because of sitting times and 2 on the bar there was a menu for self catering then one half the size for all inclusive so at the snack bars you could not have all on offer , supermarket didn`t stock alot £2 for a tin of soup ! cheaper to get a taxi and go to the strip for a meal or first set of cross roads after turning right out of complex onto main road coyote bar 2 euro for full English breakfast , the big supermarket there is good so stock up there and get taxi back , far cheaper , IF WITH A BABY ONLY 1 STORE IN OLD TOWN NEAR BUS STATION SELLS A FEW ENGLISH BRANDS OF BABY MILK NO OTHER SUPERMARKET SOME CHEMIST HAVE OWN BRANDS , LARGE SUPEMARKET STOCKS BABY FOOD AND JUICE BUT BUY WHEN YOU SEE AS THEY DON`T APPEAR TO REGULARLY STOCK UP would go again but first choice need to get things organised we were self catering and half way through brought in that you had to pre pay at reception for a card which was an A4 piece of paper to show and sign for at the bars cafe etc fine but you could only have 1 in the lead name you still need cash for the supermarket on site as they did not accept the " card" and for bingo tickets etc on a night but worse such as when i went shopping 1 day my husband who had the children at the pool could not buy anything because i had the card we could not have another as i was the lead name and you had to sign for every purchase !

reps were ok it was i`ll get back to you , reception staff in block 2 were nice the ones in block 1 were grumpy and if you want to top up your card you can only do this in your own block , madness , need to be up early also for a sunbed by 8 am just about all gone although were bringing more from the garage as we left but said they don`t like too many around as it looks untidy ! kids clubs in last week got packed and only take 30 so be first in que or like us and others you may have tears , it will be fantastic but its not finished and needs some overall good organisation and management to avoid holiday makers been disappointed and let down , especially the childern theve got some excellant first choice / E3 team entertainers who no one could give a bad review and its them that proberbly stop alot more complaining as when you found something else wrong and was disappointed , they always seamed to be there so lively and made thing enjoyable which took your mind off things , hopefully might be sorted now but a month on still waiting for a full reply from first choice over the issues we had and a holiday we did not get everything we paid for !!!!!!!!!

FANTASTIC!!! I READ SO MANY REVIEWS BEFORE TRAVELLING & I WISH I HAD'NT AS NONE OF THEM WERE TRUE.

I TRAVELLED WITH MY MUM & MY 2 CHILDREN, A 10YR OLD & A 3YR OLD, & WE WERE ALL KEPT ENTERTAINED FOR THE WHOLE WEEK. MY 3YR OLD NEVER WENT TO THE KIDS CLUB BUT MY 10YR OLD DID & LOVED IT AS THERE WAS SO MUCH TO DO.

THE FIRST CHOICE ENTERTAINMENT TEAM NEVER STOPPED ALL DAY, THEY WORKED REALLY HARD UP UNTIL MIDNIGHT.

LUCKILY FOR US THE SPLASH AREA HAD JUST OPENED THE WEEK BEFORE WE ARRIVED WHICH WAS GOOD FUN FOR ALL AGES. THERE'S A NUMBER OF POOL'S, ALL GOOD SIZES PLUS THERE ARE FOUNTAINS FOR THE KIDS.

WE STAYED IN A KIDS SUITE WHICH WAS VERY SPACEOUS & VERY CLEAN. THERE ARE 2 BLOCKS, BLOCK 1 IS THE BEST TO BE IN!

WE HAD NO COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE FOOD. ALOT OF SELECTION FOR KIDS WHICH YOU DONT ALWAYS FIND WHEN YOU GO ALL INCLUSIVE.

THERE ISNT MUCH WHEN YOU VENTURE OUTSIDE THE HOTEL, IT COSTS ABOUT 5EURO'S TO GO INTO THE OLD TOWN WHICH IS WORTH A VISIT.

WE WENT ON A TRIP TO THE ZOOMARINE, IT WAS OK, NOT AS GOOD AS I THOUGHT BUT IT WAS HOT WHICH MADE THE KIDS MISERABLE TOWARDS THE END OT THE DAY.

MY ONLY COMPLAINT WAS THE BAR STAFF OR THE LACK OF THEM. THERE WAS ONLY EVER 1 BAR STAFF ON WHICH CAUSED ALOT OF QUEUES, ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT, BUT APART FROM THAT I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL & WILL DEFINETLY GO BACK.

Excellent First choice entertainment, What you'd expect from a Holiday Village.

day or night always keeping you entertained.

Reps efficent and helpful.

Food very good in buffet.... improved as a chef from england was bought in to assist in the quality. Was ok in the portugese but did not try the italian.

snacks limited but sufficent.... typical of an all inclusive.

location ok.... but at the end of the day why do you book a hotel like a Holiday village and possibly All inclusive????? because of the on-sight facilities!!!

about 30min walk, not great for buggies but manageable.

We had a 6month old with us. We did not use the creche but wish we did but when enquired was fully booked so if want to do this then recomend pre-booking from UK.

Kids club 3yrs upwards great and the teenagers wavelength has all sorts on offer.

rooms great.... we pre-booked seaview so was guarenteed block 1. if you are in block 2 it is a bit of a hike up a path to the main area but people seemed ok.

yes there is private construction over from the complex which does not cause too much bother but may do some rooms in block 2 so would recomend booking the seaview as this will definitly guarentee you away from the work.

first choice splash area not finished fallen behind... not surprising though as the workmen worked at the pace of snails!

no heavy digging etc but touching up and paving need to be laid.... probably not finished til mid july, there was a hotel splash area and about 6 other pools so not short of water! Although VERY cold but refreshing in the heat.... our baby loved the water so wasnt too bad.

overall i would rate this hotel highly and would recomend to friends and family, may even go back.

looks great in pictures but its in the middle of nowhere if you want to walk anywhere nearest is 30min walk, its best to get taxi. we went all inclusive so with 3 children 2 7yrs old and 1 18months old we wanted to stay at this resort. on arrival we were in block 2 this was booked 13months before but work was still on going in fact for 2 days hammering and drilling.staff polite but not enough.for meals we had to travel up 50or more steps with 3 children and pushchair and again a small but 5 min walk. on arrival at resturant we found we were allocated seating times for our evening meals 8oclock till9oclock which were far to late for our youngest but even more upsetting for our 7yr olds as the childrens entertainment and dancing started at 8oclock.then came the food the chose was small and on first 2 nights cold after complaining to our rep who is on call at alltimes nothing was done, but she told us it had been noted.after 2 weeks nothing changed.all the people we spoke to were of the same opinion the food was very poor to say the least.being all inclusive trying to get drinksat the bar were just as bad, some timaes 20min or more wait as the staff was inadequate. enough said on food and drink so dont go all inclusive. now if you want a sun bed be up by 8oclock in the morning or you wont find one ,and when you do i hope you like the feeling of togetherness, in fact if possable put towel on sunbed at night as this was early in the season. on the bright side the kids club was great the pools good and clean apart from the splash pool still not finished, even though we were told they would be.our holiday was really spoilt by the food and lack of staff. algarve very nice

Alto Da Colina/ Algarve Holiday Village was a very impressive hotel . The rooms are absolutely fabulous , very spacious and all the facilities that you require , whether it be all inclusive or self catering.

We have a 3 year old and and one year old , who loved the pool areas , perfect for toddler , with the splash area and constant squirting water , lovely shallow pools as well.

Great , safe playground next to these as well.

First Choice staff were fabulous , the kids club is great , very safe and a great break for mums and dads , I was dubious as to let my son go , but he really enjoyed it and kept him busy whilst making friends!

The only downside to the hotel during our stay was the work that was going on around us , the entertainment area ,for example , was opened for the first time and some things didnt seem entirely safe.First Choice couldnt help with this and said it was down to the hotel.

All of the work was kind of being completed whilst we were there , the workers didnt seem in any hurry - I would go again , perhaps next year when everything is finished and these problems sorted out . The hotel staff didnt seem to realise that they were now a holiday village and needed to cater for everything. First choice should realise the problems there and not send guests so early to test it all out !!!!

Guests who were all inclusive were appalled by the choice and quality of food. We paid to go into the restaurant and really wasnt happy either , 20 euros pp...

Location wise , it is quite a hike into Albufeira , only 15mins or so but it is up and downhill.

Lovely restaurants nearby , Martins Restaurant is nearest , which you can see from the hotel at night ...nice BBQ's!

Great holiday. The facilities are in the process of being upgraded in order for the hotel to become a holiday villgae. Building work was not a problem as main block has been completed and the additional block is much further down the road. I would not recommend the hotel for anyone with walking problems as it is set on a hill, with all of the resorts bars and restuarants a good 20 minute walk away. We enjoyed this walk in the evening but when going into the old town we took a taxi, only 6 euros, a bargain.

Overall we loved this holiday. Had a 11 month old baby with us who also had a ball.

Have just returned from the Alto Da Colina and all in all the apts are fantastic although the location is a bit out on a limb.

Just prior to travel we were informed by First Choice that there would be building works due to the fact that the apts are being turned into a holiday village which will be fantastic when done but would not cause any disruption. This was not the case and did depend on what block you stayed in and we unfortunately were in the block just in front of the constant drilling which started at 8.15 and went on until 9.15pm although not every day. There was lots of mess and biulding sand/rubble which was not fenced off as we were advised and also they are building a new apt block on the site next to the original site and the building lorries and trucks parked on the entire pavement making it quite difficult and sometimes dangerous for pedestrians esp with pushchairs to get through.

Now the grumbles out of the way the rooms were excellent and were cleaned 6 times a week by very friendly staff as were the reception staff.

Indoor swimming pool was lovely but the kiddies pool was not filled as people had complained it was too cold!!!! but i could not see it being as cold as the main pool as it was like ice, but my son managed to do a full lap for 10 euros which was very entertaining for everyone else.!!!

The gym and the suana are charged at 5 euros and 2.50 euros per person per day and they also hire beach towells at a charge of 20 euros each which is refunded on the return of the towells on departure, unless you are unlucky enough to have them taken by another guest.

Did not eat in the complex so cannot comment on the food but will advise that getting to the strip takes about 25-30 mins walk or 4 euros in a taxi which reception will call for you at a charge of 50 cents. Lovely pizzeria called Frogys which is fantastic and also Fredis which is on the crossroads was very good.

The old town is beautiful but takes about 1 1/2 hours to walk which is down hill on the way and a killer on the way back up. Taxi cost about 5.50 euros. Lots of pottery shops and souvenir shops to browse around and a very good restaurant there just off to the side of the square is Pampas which was fantastic.

There is no supermarket on site but you can use the one at the sister complex the Alfagar which is just across the road or there is a very good s/market on the main road going left out of the complex which is brilliant.

You can access the beach from the Alfagar down a cliff path which leads onto Eulalia beach which is a cove with just one restaurant but very cheap. 2 euros a pint and toasted sandwich 2.50 euros.

Another beach is Praia de Oura which is georgous and has a seafront of restaurants but these although nice are a lot dearer.

Look out for the timeshare touts as they do not leave you alone and also the looky looky men with the cheap watches and sunglasses.

Overall a great holiday as we were very lucky with the weather which was creeping up to 23 as we were leaving which is not bad for April.

If you hire a car in the UK be aware that you are not fully insured and that they will charge you an excess of approx 8 euros a day as a waiver in case of an accident otherwise they will charge you 600 euros.

Would not return to the resort as never like to go to the same place twice but when all the work is completed (which is running behind schedule) the place will be fantastic for the kids as they were installing a high wire which i would of loved to have gone on and also we went out of season so not everthing was running on site including entertainment.

Have returned today from a brilliant week at the Alto da Colina. Went with my mother and two children aged 9 and 5. We all thought that the complex offered something for everyone. The outdoor pools were too cold for me but the kids both tolerated the cool waters. They thought that the indoor pool and jacuzi were excellent and I do agree. It is open until 8pm, its heated and the atmosphere was great as everyone played together, there are sun loungers so if you dont want a dip you dont have to.

We were self catering and found the rooms facilities to be adequate to our needs as we ate out except for breakfast. The hotel food was good, but we particularly liked the food served at the beach bar at Maria Luisa Beach (follow signs for Club Med). I thought this beach the best for children and the toilets at the bar are very clean and accesable from the beach.

Don't be put off by building work-it doesn't interfere with the holiday atmosphere as its away from the main complex, its an additional build at the bottom of the road upto the hotel and little bits of upgrade around the main pool. We were never disturbed by noise or suffered any discomfort. We had a great time and would go again.

After searching through the Holiday Watchdog Website searching for a decent hotel in Portugal, we decided on the Alto da Colina ApartHotel. We were a bit apprehensive, but nevertheless we booked it.

Upon arrival we were greeted at the Airport and sent via pre-booked transfers to the Hotel. This took about 45 minutes. The Hotel does both full board and self catering, we chose the self catering option.

The Hotel itself was always very clean and the staff were more than helpful. The rooms are recently refurbished and done to a good standard. They are large and comfortable with some having kitchings (for self catering like ours). The balconies are large and ideal for sitting on and watching the sunset. The rooms are also serviced by cleaning staff everyday except Sundays.

We were warned about some building work present and there was, but it was not very loud and hardly disturbed us. There is a new hotel being next door but it is having the finishing touches done and there is little disturbance from there.

The Hotel is located just 5 minutes drive (2miles) from the main resturant/entertainment area of Albefuira called "The Strip" and hence why we chose self catering. Taxis to the area cost about 4 euros one way and the hotel can call them for you. There is a taxi rank nearby for the return trip. There are also plenty of local supermarkets for those going self catering. We initially bought from the Hotel shop (which is actually located in the sister hotel across the road) not knowing any better, but as we got out we realised we could get a better variety from the local supermarkets. The food served by the hotel was fairly limited however some families chose to eat there and we heard no complaints.

We hired a car for five days out of our weeks stay which cost 120 euros. This allowed us to get out and see the local area. For those that want a bit more , I would suggest a hire car is a good option.

In conclusion, we enjoyed our stay very much and would in fact go back again should we revisit Portugal. The Hotel was as described and we found it more than acceptable for self catering purposes.

We have just returned from 2 weeks in the Alto Da Colina. The hotel is really nice, very clean and tidy with everything that you need all under one roof; supermarket, bar, internet access etc etc.

The food in the hotel was not the best. We would only suggest this as a snack, e.g. toasties and chips. The best place to eat is the local place called Agapitos - they do the best steaks and kebabs know to man or the strip which about 20 minutes walk or a 5 minute taxi ride.

The taxis are brill, they have a fixed tariff to a certain destination and then after that it goes up by 15 cents every few minutes. But you can be waiting up to an hour on busy days - Thursdays and in busy times - 6.30 till 8 pm.

The hotel itself is very nice and the staff are brilliant, they will do any thing to help.

Can get very noisy as there are alot of children there, we went on ‘allocation on arrival’ and have no children so got a bit much for us.

So all in all, very nice hotel, but not really any good if you don’t have children!

Just back from 2 weeks at Alto da Colina Apartments and loved it. The place to go if you want the kids entertained. The first choice kids reps were great, catering for ages 18mths to 15 yrs, our 10 yr old daughter loved the Wave-length club.

The hotel is situated just 20 minutes walk from the strip, but taxis and the local bus are cheap. Quicker to walk early evening as you could wait up to an hour for a taxi to arrive.

Small shop on the complex good selection and very reasonable in price, it wasn't worth the sweat to walk any further to save a couple of euro!

Hotel staff were great and all worked very hard to keep the place clean and tidy.

Pool area got very busy our 2nd week- this was one of the busiest weeks of the year-and there was a sun bed shortage, people did put there towels out at 8am and not appear at the beds until after lunch time. We went to the beach in the mornings and back to the pool about 3pm.

Great beach behind the Alfagar apt (right at the main road then first left) but you do need to climb about 100 steps, Ok going down but hard work getting back up!!

Plenty of restaurants in the area, we liked Martins-Right at the main road and walk for about 8 minutes, nice food freshly cooked on the outside BBQ.

Also ate in the golf resort- left at the main road and walk for a couple of minutes, they had a buffet with plenty of choice for all. Food at the hotel was good, snack menu and A la carte menu good choice but could get boring after a while.

Evening entertainment in the hotel was good, the team of reps looked after all ages each night, mixture of kids disco, bingo, quizzes, panto's.
