Lovely hotel - would go back again!! by miller70

We found this hotel really lovely. The owners were really friendly and helpful especially with our young children. The hotel was very tastefully decorated and very clean. The family room in which we stayed was spacious and had everything we needed for our stay. Tea and coffee and biscuits and TV which was handy for the kids in the morning! The food was wonderful - best breakfast I have ever had!! The surroundings were also beautiful and with Cockington Park so close it was great for walks and to give the children lots of fresh air. The owners gave us lots of advice on good places to visit as they had young children themselves. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

A beautiful hotel set in peaceful surroundings by JWUFF

On arrival we were warmly welcomed by the owner and shown to our spacious family bedroom, extremely well presented with an en suite and tea/coffee making facilities. The room was very clean and comfortable with ample wardrobe space.

The rest of the hotel is also impressive. A large sweeping staircase, relaxing lounge, attractive decor and a 'honesty' bar.

Tourist information is available plus the owners were very helpful to recommend places to visit.

We enjoyed the full breakfast - an extensive menu is offered to suit all.

The hotel is tucked away in the charming villlage of Cockington, just a short distance from the sea front and Torquay. The hotel sits in a large garden bordering the country park.

What can I say. by ALI0711

We arrived at Lanscombe house to a warmish greeting and shown our rooms, both of which were lovely. Breakfast also very good. However on the negative side our host when asked about the pros and cons of living in such a beautiful part of the country, only said negative comments. He finds tourists awful ( even though tourism is his lively hood), awaiting guests to arrive leaves the family with no quality time and that it's extremely hard work running a hotel. Although they did make you aware of how to contact them if you needed them, ie: an intercom in the hallway through to their adjoined house and a telephone number, there was no provisision made that in case of an medical emergancy leaving you unable to leave your room, you would not be able to contact the owners or if required an ambulance as there are no landlines in the bedrooms and there is no mobile phone signal at the property. To summerise Lanscombe House is a beautiful property, set in a stunning part of England. However our hosts did'nt make us or our children feel very welcome and both could be very sarcastic. I feel clearing breakfast plates whren some family members are still eating incredibly rude, it happened both mornings of our stay, infact it was the first time we saw Leon the first morning and he didn't even have the manners to say Good Morning. By collecting the plates the way they did made us feel rushed and unwelcomed.

We are a Country House Guest House with a relaxed informal atmosphere where I treat our guests as though they are truly our guests. Our breakfasts are informal, good local produce with attentive service and yes we do clear plates away when finished with - no apologies. The mobile signal is good for O2, Orange OK and Vodafone poor (until the new mast is built). If you want in room phones then choose a 5 star hotel not a guest house. True I have a dry sense of humour (we are in Basil country after all) but no 'sarcasm' directed to guests unless they are a family from hell or expect herds of wilderbeats sweeping majestically across the lawns!!!!

We are a Five star Country House B&B in a stunning location where our guests are treated as our true house guests. I despair when a guest doesn't raise concerns with us at the time and then goes away and writes such drivel and lies with no comeback. To pick out the bits that are true: yes we clear away plates when you have finished (does anyone want to stare at an empty plate for ages?); yes the Vodaphone signal is poor at our property (Orange patchy and O2 OK) this is because we live in a secluded valley away from mobile phone masts and our walls are 2 feet thick - she didn't point out to you that we do have a pay phone in reception if stuck. And the bits that are untrue: I am one of the most courteous and welcoming people, I do not find tourists awful (it’s not even a word I use) but I do have a dry sense of humor about the industry we (and our family) live and work in; our mattresses are all less than 3 years old (she and her family slept on one year old mattresses, her bed was a year old; while her sons had indeed ‘old beds’ - actually genuine period antique twin beds). We have had a regular upgrade of mattresses every three years - currently being replaced with the latest memory foam. I can only put this review down to a wet summer and two winging teenage boys who probably really wanted two weeks in Spain laying in the sun rather than trudging round with their parents in a very damp West Country. Happy days....!

Beautiful, Pretty & Perfect! by MissKLondon

I took my Mum to Lanscombe House for her Birthday. Her birthday is 21st May and we stayed 22nd - 26th May. It was a surprise & i told her on her Birthday that we were going the next day!

We got the train there which was really easy as Torquay station is 5 mins from Lanscombe House.

We got a lovely warm welcome when we arrived & were shown around the beautiful 8 bedroomed Victorian house. There is a lovely fresh, clean, sunny breakfast room. An Honesty bar stocked up with every drink you could ask for & even a coffee & hot choc machine.

We stayed in room No.5- it was so lovely. Huge four poster bed, pretty dressing table, nice big wardrobe, chairs & coffee table overlooking the pretty garden. The bathroom has a huge rolltop bath & a separate shower. Room & whole house was so clean!

The breakfast was so so yummy! Any combination of fried breakfast (Local smoked bacon, local eggs, mushrooms, tom's, fried bread etc), fresh juice, tea or coffee, toast. This may sound petty but even the sauce tops (tomato & hp) were clean!- real attention to detail.

Information available on days out, where to eat etc. Leon advised No. 7 fish restaurant- it was fantastic! Best fish i have ever had!

Cockington itself is simply magical- lakes, flowers, thatched cottages, norman church, cricket ground, old manor house, blacksmith, glassblower. It really is just the perfect place for a long weekend away. The whole of Torbay can be explored, the walk to the bus stop on Torquay seafront is a relaxed, scenic one & the bus routes cover all of Torbay.

The cream teas at cockington manor & rose cottage are wonderful- we really did have a perfect, relaxing break. The Drum inn is also nearby for food- it wasn't wonderful but for the price & closeness to Lanscombe House you couldn't moan, plus the setting and liquer coffees made with clotted cream make it well worth a visit!

Really can't explain how lovely this place is- i will definately be returning, at least once a year!

Not your average B & B by mrh67

We have had returned from an excellent stay at Lanscombe House. This is not your average B & B.

The hotel is located in the beautiful village of Cockington just outside Torquay.

Leon & his family were excellent hosts and made a big effort to ensure we enjoyed our stay .

The house is an early Victorian grand house with large rooms and high ceilings. The rooms are tastefully appointed and very clean.

The restaurant recommendations Leon made ensured that the food was great and not your normal seaside fare. Leon also had great suggestions of local atractions that would entertain our 3 year old.

Torquay centre is 5 minutes drive from the town which was good for my wife who was attending a conference at the Riviera centre.

The honesty bar made the stay more enjoyable as our 3 year old likes to be in bed for 7pm so we could sit in the lounge or garden with our baby monitor..

We have stayed in hotels where we have paid 3-4 times the price with a lesser standard of quality and service. We would highly recommend Lanscombe House and not hesitate to return.

This is a charming hotel set in the beautiful village of Cockington which is in Torquay it is only a mile from the beach yet set in a country park and only 2-3 miles from the harbour and town. It is full of old world charm and Leon and his wife do everything in there power to make you fill welcome. they also run a tea garden from the hotel and their cream teas are to die for. I cannot recommend it highly enough please try it you will not be dissappointed
