The Alfagar Apartments were excellent - lovely pool though a bit cold in January to venture into! There is a small supermarket on site with all the essentials and more. Entertainment is on at the bar every night which is good if you don't want the walk into Albuferia - which is about 15mins but boring as it is on a main road. Food in the bar was also good.

Date May 2007 Just returned from two weeks in the Alfagar.we had booked a one bed apartment and was very happy to find we were given a two bed apartment, which was a lovely suprise. The apartment was very spaceous and while the decore was a bit dated it was very clean and cleaned every day. The Alfagar is blessed with some really lovely sea views and their is a lovely 'cliff walk' around the apartments with steps (quite steep) down to a nice beach. Two really nice pools and a toddler paddling pool. One of the pools (one with sea views) is a quite pool with comfortable sun longers. The other pool is used more by families and had horrible hard sun lounges! At first we thought the bar lacked any character however after a few days the friendly bar staff had won us over and while the entainment was very bad i think when your in good holiday spirits you often find that when its that bad you can have a great laugh at it. the food in the bar during the day was quite good for what it was and a lot better than most other places ive stayed in.Resturant on site as well would do if you were stuck. However there was some down sides.one was that you are aquite far from the town so you do i think with kids need to get a taxi and you do need to line up and wait for the taxis at reception for anything up to 40min. Albufeira 'strip' is horrible plenty neon lights just not nice at all.no nice places to eat.go to the old town much nicer in everyway better selection of resturents yo will be spoiled if you like fish. The Alfagar also had lots of stray cats and a dog woundering around out side the bar.this wount bother you if you are a cat lover but if like me you hate cats it takes getting used to.Most other people did not seem to be bothered however one other holiday maker did tell me she saw the dog snap at child.so just be aware of this. Over all the Alfagar are nice clean apartments you could do alot worst.
loved it cant wait to go again

we have just returned from the alfagar appartments and i have to say it was one of the best holidays i have ever had. there was 7 of us in total, myself my partner our 4 children and one of their friends. we had 2 one bedroom appartments in block 1. the children's ages 18, 17, 16, 9 & 2. the 3 older ones in one appartment whilst the rest of us had another. even though we was in block one which is right near the pool and bar we wasnt disturbed by what little noise we could hear. the appartments where in need of a little refurbishment but don't be put off by that there is no one more fussy than me and we had no problem with them. they where spotlessly clean and the maids brought clean towels every day. ( i always take my own towels on holiday but i wont bother next time we return there.) the whole of the complex was spotless, there was cleaners out cleaning all around the pool area & grounds from 8 in the morning. the bar and snack bar was pretty reasonably priced but i would say there was limited choice. there is a resturant but we didnt try it this time around. the bar staff seemed unpleasant at first until you got to know them. i suppose it's a case of be pleasant with them and they are pleasant with you. they was really nice. the entertainment was a little cheesy but it's not that bad. on the complex there are 2 big pools and 2 childrens pools and a play area with swings and things. they wasn't all spaced out either which was great because if the liitle one was playing on the swings we could keep our eyes on the 9 year old aswell whilst she was in the pool. the alfagar has everything in one place and if you don't want to leave the complex for the whole of your holiday you dont have to. if on the other hand you fancy a day out you have to try zoo marine the dolphin show is a must & the new 4-d cinema is hilarious. also slide & splash is a great day out. if it's a spot of shopping you fancy try the gypsy market on wednesdays you might have to hire a car but it's well worth it but take plenty money with you. if you want to go to the strip it is about a 20 minute walk on the other hand you can go to the reception and order a taxi which costs 4 euros. try geordie pride if your felling a little home sick you can get a double english cooked breakfast for 5 euros. that will certainly set you up for the day. also seneor frogs has the most delicious pizzas ever. one more to try is the mexican their fajita's are to die for. we have only been home for 2 weeks and we have already booked for next time if i have the choice i would have the same appartment as we had last time. this was the only holiday we have had where we managed to please everyone in the family. if you dont enjoy the alfagar you are very hard to please.
great place poor service

Alfagar is a resort which is being updated at the moment. We stayed in a one bedroom apartment which had recently been updated. The partment was lovely, new bathroom, decor and lovely views. Our parents, whocame with us had an apartment which was still to be updated and was in need of some care, Their view was of a building site, Alfagar Two, which first choice failed to tell us was being built at the moment, not due to be finished until 2009. This is the same for much of the Algarve, loads of building sites. Any green spaces seem to be being built on and not in a pretty way. The walk in to Albufera takes approx one hour along a busy road. Well worth the walk as the waiters at the complex were awful. Did not want to serve you, they cleaned the tables by using the plastic menu to sweep food on to the floor! Other staff were lovely, including the rep. Best of the west was a good trip, lovely mountain views and lunch was lovely, Christina the tour guide was excellent. As for the rest of the complex, the swimming pools were excellent, day time entertainment was non existant and the evening entertainment was extremely poor. Very small supermarket on site good prices but not much choice, better supermarket along the road. This was our first visit to Portugal probably will be the last.
great holiday
from spireiteenglishbull
We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived at the Alfagar as some of the places we had dropped other holiday makers off en route didn't look very nice. We were allocated a room overlooking one of the pools but we asked if we could be moved as we wanted a peaceful holiday, and found it a bit to noisy. We were given another room without having to argue or beg and ended up with what must have been one of the best rooms on the complex. We had fantastic views overlooking the sea but we could also see for miles from all angles. There were a few gripes, noisy dustbinmen at 2 o clock in the morning, very very hard beds, the locks were a nightmare and we still hadn't mastered them by the end of our holiday. Also I think some people should show some consideration for others when they are coming in at all hours of the morning as the noise echoes really badly in the stair wells. But we didn't let these points take anything away from a great holiday. The alfagar has everything you could want and you could spend your whole holiday there, we found all staff friendly, everywhere was clean, and apart from round the pools everywhere else was quiet and peaceful. It was only a 15 minute walk to the strip and every time we went there, we saw a large queue waiting at the hotel entrance for a taxi (I'm sure it would have been quicker to walk). It was around a 50 minute walk to the old town. Albufeira is a place that has something for everybody, but if you get the chance hire a car and go a bit further afield, there are some lovely places all along the Algarve. We will definately go back to the Alfagar, we are hoping to go next year along with our daughters and their families as we think there is something for everyone here.
Not the perfect place that it looks

We stayed at the Alfagar for 2 weeks, returning 13 September 2007. We hired a car for 9 days, travelling quite extensively, including Lisbon, Sintra and around many regions of the Algarve. It is clear that the Alfagar looks nice. The complex is filled with trees and provides very pleasant surroundings. The pools are excellent - very clean and one has lovely sea views. The apartments vary greatly in size and it has to be said that you are unlikely to be moved if yours is not as you hoped. In particular, I was told three times that because FIRST CHOICE allegedly do not pay much to the complex, that you will never get a sea view. You can really divide the apartments into three: those with a sea view (bliss) those higher up near the tennis court (quiet ish) and those by the bar/restaurant/shop (hell). The apartments are basic, but that's ok and are cleaned well and regularly. Be warned though, the beds are HARD, and I don't mean firm, which I like. I had to buy a lilo and put it on the bed covered in blankets in order to get a good night's sleep. The noise is constant, due to cars, banging doorsand being on a flight path.It groans along all day and at night the karaoke means that you have to listen to the theme from Titanic being sung each and every night (badly). This may sound funny, but unless you join in and drink at the bar, there's little escape from it. Also, if you are unlucky enough to be on a first or ground floor then you will hear EVERY noise from the people above. It's not their fault, but each time a chair is scraped along the floor, a shower used etc etc, you can hear it. I am sad to say that I was disappointed with the Alfagar. It does look nice compared to many high rise hotels. It is, as I said, clean. The fact that you cannot sleep because of the BANGING DOORS spoils the whole holiday. The doors need to banged in order to close them, and so all day and during the night your sleep is interrupted constantly. It is a dreadful noise in echoey corridors. The resort of Albufeira is made up of the 'Strip' and Old Albufeira. The Strip has bars and clubs for those who want to enjoy them and the old part is also vibrant packed full of restaurants, shops and bars. For the older traveller, it was better. Having travelled around the region though, I would strongly recommend LAGOS. It maintains Portugeuse architecture, has a fantastic marina and load of lovely beaches. It is a class apart from Albufeira and should be where first time travellers to Portugal visit. It's got a buzz, is vibrant and caters for all ages. It's simply superb. Last year we travelled to the Panorama Hotel in Lesvos. It's streets ahead of the Alfagar because the beds were comfortable, the complex was quiet and you could return after two weeks feeling refreshed and having had a lot of fun. The Alfagar was a disappointment, and I feel robbed. As a fellow traveller from Exeter Airport said (as we were both trying to move apartments) "You work hard all year and you just feel that for two weeks, it's my turn." It wasn't our turn this year and I hope that you consider very carefully before you book, especially, if the owners are to be believed, you use FIRST CHOICE. Roll on next year.
WOT NO TAXIS !!!!

We stayed for 2 weeks from the 18th of August as part of a group our family in a 2 bedroom apt in block 3 and our freinds in block 1 in a 1 bed apt. Block 1 seems a little dated and in need of refurb block 3 was alot better. The best pool was the top pool fantastic views and loads of entertainment from Steve and Sarah charlotte and jacob loved their daytime company only wished we had had their evening company as well!!! The taxis are the biggest downside ques from the hotel last anything upto 2 hours into albefeira and coming back form the old town is just as bad after 10.30. The hotel has a courtesy bus for the day but no one uses this facility would be best having the bus running on a night time to releive the ever growing cues. If your wanting a nice restaurant at night visit the three palms just before the last roundabaout of the old town/ or the cassa vierra before the new strip. Overall we had a fantastic holiday at a great place.
Loved Portugal shame about location
from BertDent
Just returned from our hols at the Alfagar, and have to say we were a little bit dissapointed in the location. It was our first time in Portugal and unlike Cyprus, taxis were very hard to come by . Often 2 hour wait at reception get there before 6.30 pm to be at the front of the cue. Easier option is to walk in and get a taxi back, not an easy walk if you have kids and a buggy but faster than waiting at reception. Pools were spot on 2 baby pools and 2 big pools a little cold at first but cleaned every day. Sun terraces and gardens were well kept and rooms were clean and tidy. Dissapointed at having to pay for the tennis courts 5 euros/hour but still played every day. Pool bar evening entertainment was rubbish but food and drink prices very reasonable. On site restuarant is worth a visit try the Portugese steak. All in all enjoyed our holiday but in heinsight would have picked somwhere more central for bars and restuarants.
Enjoyable stay

We stayed in the Alfagar during the month of August. Lovely scenic location near the beach. The apartments are fairly old but well maintained. My main problem was attempting to get a sunbed! By 9 am or earlier all of them were covered with towels! We gave up after 3 early mornings and still no success so we headed to the beach instead. Some beds seemed to be covered all day without anyone actually using them which i thought was unfair. The night time entertainment seemed to always be karoake, so we gave that a wide berth too. The Alfagar runs a bus to the main town twice daily at 10 and 2. Getting into town at nite meant getting a taxi and waiting quite a while for it. We que'd one nite for one and half hours in the old town to get back to the Alfagar, after that experience we headed to the strip instead, much easier to get a taxi there. I think it would be much better if the Alfagar ran the bus in the evening as well and i can't understand why they don't. There's obviously a demand for it judging by the crowd every evening waiting on the taxis...To walk to the strip takes about 40 mins.. A nice place to stay, staff in reception very friendly and helpful. Supermarket very handy for everything..
Excellent Holiday ideal for 3 adults and 3 kids

We have just returned from a wonderful two week holiday at the Alfagar apartments in Portugal. The complex is very well designed and consists of : 3 swimming pools a mini market , which is more than adequate for day to day shopping and it is open from 8 am to 8 pm.Cafe bar and a Restaurant. Our two bedroom apartment was excellent and we were situated in the block 2 area.It was very big with a small sea view and a large balcony over looking the tennis courts. The apartment was also very clean. The maids work very hard and provide clean towels etc 5 times a week. The reception staff are very friendly and helpful and the mini bus service they run to the old town is fantastic. It is a shame this service stops at 3 pm beacuse you are quite isolated. The Cafe Bar and Restaurant are ok for a quick snack but there are nicer places to eat especially in the Old Town and not only are the views superior but so is the food. The Swimming pools are excellent and in my opinion the pool at the top of the complex with the sea view is the best .It is only a short walk to the sandy beach which turned out to be another favourite attraction of ours .Also if you feel you can manage a bit more exercise try out the tennis courts they are very cheap to hire and good fun.The weather was also superb and it became very hot in the afternoon but to everyone's surprise it became cooler in the evening which was a bonus. A splendid time was had by all.
Location of this hotel was ok and the hotel from the outside looked good. Thought the receptionist could have been welcoming on arrival. When we arrived at the room we were shocked at how dirty it was the smell in the room was disgusting and so were the stains on the... more
