While we were shooting for an interiors book 'Decorating with Blue and White,' (see inside the book for pictures of the Riad), we stayed at Riad Edward and were wonderfully well looked after. The staff were helpful and charming, the food was great - and sitting in the mirror mosaic alcove overlooking the pool in the evenings to eat dinner was one of the highlights - as was eating coffee and rolls on the roof terrace in the morning, listening to the sounds of the city far below. When it got a littlle colder we ate in the dining room, heated by a wood fire and surrounded by antiques.
The rooms are interesting and charismatic, far far removed from the blandness of a modern hotel. Each one decorated with style and charisma and with an individual flavour that we loved. Some areas are distressed with age, and have been left as found by the owners when they bought it instead of being modernised. Staying at Riad Edward is just like staying with slightly bohemian and welcoming friends.
The Riad is a good 20 minute walk through the old city to the main square, and is in an authentically Marrakech area with all the atmosphere of the ancient medieval city - street traders, donkeys and woodsmoke. And very safe to walk back to the haven of Riad Edward at night. For an experience of real Marrakech life, with the all ambience of tradition, Riad Edward can't be beaten.
