perfect paphos
from nickybasingstoke
I had an opportunity to visit Cyprus in November 2005, I hired a car from Europa at the airport. The car was very basic (a little vauxhall corsa) and reeked of old cigarettes, but, reliable and cheap to run. I stayed at the Paphiessa hotel. The accomodation was basic, but clean and comfortable. It has a lovely pool. The food not so great. Preferred to eat out. Also seemed to have hot water problems every day. When I wanted to have a shower, I had to phone the reception about 2 hours in advance for them to switch something on to allow the water to warm up. As I went in November, the weather was nice and sunny during the day, averaging about 25 degrees, and chilly in the evenings. Perfect for a good night's sleep. The roads are in very good repair and maps easy to follow. Cyprus is truly a magical place, the locals friendly and not at all pushy. The sea is so beautiful and calm. I drove to Nicosia, Limassol and through the Kato mountains and found everything within easy reach. The local people drive very politely and no one seems to have the need to speed anywhere

Having read previous reviews on this hotel just after booking my holiday I began to have fears that it was not the right place for me. However, most seemed to refer to the self catering appartments at the location and the hotel was the closest to the harbour area at three weeks notice and at a reasonable price so I decided that I would go and enjoy it anyway. The comments about the distance from the harbour etc could be valid if you were not a reasonable walker and if you did not find the shortest way despite the excellent maps provided free. The breakfast was adequate for the money although uninspiring and boring after day two. i was booked half board but as a veggie did not find any choice so did not eat dinner in the hotel, thus wasting money. It had not been possible to book on a bed and breakfast basis. The poolside cafeteria, however, provided freshly cooked snacks from noon until mid afternoon and they were excellent. As a single traveller I was pleased to get a proper twin room with balcony in a good location for my single supplement. This does not happen at all hotels. The furnishings throughout the hotel were traditional and maybe a little dated in places, although clean and well maintained. Lighting, as is usual in Cyprus, was on the dim side. Garden and poolside furniture was plentiful but a bit jaded at the end of the season. There was a weekly entertainment programme posted but apart from a few items including the football did not seem to take place or finished early - again end of season possibly and the fact that there was so much to do outside the hotel in and around Paphos. The staff were friendly and efficient.

Reception by Chris, warm & welcoming, information provided good. Room clean and adequately equipped, located overlooking pool and bar area. 1/2 Board food basic and well presented although the options were limited to two choices of starter, three choices of main meal and the dessert was cake, jelly and ice cream. Mohamed and his staff were top quality ensuring that there was little delay between ordering, presentation and removal of plates. The pool area was always clean and well maintained although the sun did dip early behind the trees, perhaps it may be of benefit to trim them to provide longer hours of direct sun. The great disadvantage was the live entertainment held in the bar area which resulted in loud music affecting the rooms overlooking that area, the noise carrying on until 0130 in the morning. This carried on despite drawing the matter to the attention of Reception on the nights in question and the mornings after. Overall, the hotel was adequate but I would not return due to the noise levels of the music and from the the very busy dual carrigeway situated immediately outside the hotel pool area and therefore again affecting the rooms with the pool view.
Not a 3 Star Hotel!

Just spent a week at the Paphiessa in a self catering studio. On the plus side the room was clean and the staff very helpful. The pool was fine with plenty of sun loungers (some seemed a bit dirty) and the public areas were nice. On the minus the room was very dated and tatty. The kitchenette was not well equipped and we got a major ant invasion (dealt with quickly by the staff) plus sundry other insects scuttling across the floor - probably not something limited to this hotel. Coral Bay was the best beach nearby (buses run from just round the corner. It was very crowded and given how easy it is to drive round the island hire a car and go to Polis and Latchi for a quiter more relaxed atmosphere. Reception can get you better car hire rates than through your rep although we used the shop on the corner just 100 meters from the hotel - they gave us a great deal. If yu can, try to get to eat at Seven St Georges tavern - fantastic meze at really good prices - you do need to book [-]. The restaurant is 5 mins drive from the hotel and has a website - [-]. Another good restaurant esp for fish is close by - walk out of the hotel at the gate by the pool, turn right, go to the crossroads and turn right - the restaurant is the second on the right.
Brilliant place to stay

Having read some of the reviews on this website before my holiday I was slightly nervous about my stay at the Paphiessa! However, I can honestly say that is does not deserve some of the comments it has received. We stayed in an apartment which was basic but pleasant, spacious and very clean. Maid service was every day but Sunday and our linen and towels were changed twice during our week-long stay. I was very impressed with the bathroom which had a bath and proper shower, which you often don't get in Greece. Air conditioning was free, although it was noisy. We were self-catering so I cannot comment on the food although we ate in the pool-side bar and that was fine. There were plenty of sun loungers although much of the pool area is in the shade in the afternoon. We didn't stay in the hotel bar during the evening and to be honest I can't understand why people go on holiday to stay in their hotel all day and all night. The hotel is a pleasant 10 minute stroll to the main bars and restaurants where there is plenty of entertainment. My one and only complaint is that , as a young 20-something, this hotel seems mainly popular with middle-aged couples. Although this wasn't a problem, its probably not ideal if you're looking for something more lively. Hotel staff were very friendly and spoke good English, which was a good job as although we went with Thomson, we didn't have a rep. Nobody even turned up to do our welcome meeting! So don't bother going with Thomson. If you are looking for a luxurious place to stay- the Paphiessa probably isn't for you. But its perfect as a base to stay. Don't book trips through your tour operators, they are hugely overpriced. We went with Socrates into the Troodos mountains and they were great, we paid £6 each compared with the £20 that Thomson wanted! Also, a word of warning about Cyprus- it isn't cheap. So expect to pay British prices for most things.
Brilliant Staff BUT Hotel not for us
from prodog
If you like Beer, Karaoke and not having to dress up in the evenings then this is the Hotel for you. Our room which overlooked the bar area was very nice during the day but very noisy until 2am. The Air-conditioning was extremely noisy and the bathroom, although clean, was in dire need of a makeover and the lighting was very poor. The room was clean though if a bit dark due to the high proportion of green paintwork everywhere. Balconies were far too small. The hotel's position on a very busy main road makes it very noisy and not ideal if you want a secluded quiet spot. It's an approx 10-15 minute stroll into Kato Paphos and the tourist/harbour area, and approx 30-40 minute walk to the town centre. There is a very good bus service however which does a round trip from Paphos/Harbour/Coral Bay every 20-30 mins or so. The pool area was nice enough with plenty of sunbeds and a good size pool and a separate children's pool. However despite the No Diving warnings, swimmers were constantly being bombarded by those who obviously couldn't read and this is something to bear in mind if you've got little kids. The Breakfast was dire. Very little choice and what was on offer was very unappetising. We had a couple of lunches around the pool which were nice enough. The Bar area was OK - the Hotel was full of Brits, all of whom appeared to want to do nothing more than smoke and drink all day long, evening entertainment was pretty poor with some dreadful Karaoke. However the staff were excellent, especially on Reception. Very helpful and accommodating. Public areas of the hotel were nice enough but we basically only slept there, so didn't really use them. Paphos is quite lively and there a huge number of restaurants and bars, prices for meals and drinks are very reasonable and it's a good base to stay. There is no beach at Paphos, the nearest is Coral Bay (which is fantastic). There seemed to be two age ranges that stayed here - 18-30's and over 65's. Very few of those of us who are somewhere in between! We won't be staying at this Hotel again - it just wasn't for us, but Paphos was great.
Nice- But would not return to that hotel

I have just returned from a week at this hotel with my aunt. I have been to Cyprus a few times before but never stayed in Paphos. I really did my re-search before going both with the travel agent and on this site. I think most of the comment given have been both fair and true. However, whilst the actual hotel and pool area are nice , the actual apartments leave a lot to be desired. I found the apartment so dark and depressing, it really needs some urgent and majour re-decoration. Its so old fashioned. The doors and the closet in the bedrooms/living rooms are pained dark green , the furnature is dark red and the place was not very clean. and our balcony was so small. We did ask to move and after looking at some other rooms we decided to stick to what we had as they were no better. There were lots of ants in the room when we got there, climbing the bed room wall but the cleaner gave us some powder to put down which seemed to help. We kept all food covered at all times. Thank goodness for the little shop next to the hotel because with out that we would have had to carry our water and bottles of drink etc for miles in the heat, because this hotel was so far away from everything. The pool area itself was nice and there were lots of sun beds so no problem there. The staff were nice but the entertainment was very poor in the evenings , some nights you would come back from the town around 11pm and there was not much going on. The actual beach/Harbour area is around a 45 min walk from the hotel , which I found really bad , had I know this I would never have gone to this hotel , some people have said on this site its 10 min walk, NO way!! We timed it and that was without stopping . Paphos itslef is lovely, hundereds on great resturants and bars and The Harbour area is really great. There is no proper beach in Paphos , I think many people got the bus to Coral Bay. All in all I would go back to Cyprus , but Id stay much closer to the Harbour area. I saw many hotels/apartments there for the same price as this one. This hotel really does need to re-decorate the rooms and put on some better entertainment to keep the customers happy but all in all I had a wonderful holiday. I
loved it!!

We have just returned from the Paphiessa as a group of six (three couples), and do not have a bad word to say about the place! Very Clean, furnishings in the bedroom were fantastic, showers were good, i suppose the lighting in the bathroom could be a tad better with the door open, balconies consisted of a table and two chairs and we were overlooking the pool. The Pool itself was just right with a seperate baby pool, plenty of seating arrangments outside some shaded some in the sun, and the poolside is never short of sunbeds! Breakfasts were alot better than we thought but remember you are going to a foreign country so obviously their cuisine is not the same as out fatty fry ups! but they did try to cater for all! If the hotel breakfast's don't meet your needs then there are plenty of places around that do full english for 1.50cyp. Mohammed Mohammed Mohammed! He is the sweetest helpful man make sure you leave him a big tip! All staff were extremely helpful, would even keep the bat open till all ours to keep you happy! Watch out for the scary Karaoke dude on a tuesday night though don't pay too much attention to him or he will randomely turn up whereever you are over the next couple of days!!!! 'SURPRISE' I think this is the only word he knows! As for Paphos itself, i personally think it caters for all tastes, lacking a beach area but you have to discover your own or get a bus to coral bay. shops on the sea front and stalls are good to look at and the main strip is know as Bar street which is no aiya napa but is a mini version, try the cocktail bar Baywatch at the top end. Make sure you have plenty of money with you as the price differency with England is not that much. If you have the opportunity through your rep try Georges Fun Bus, he is such a laugh and his cooking is amazing!!!! Enjoy you holiday!!

I wanted to get the record straight in comparision to some of the negative reports on the Hotel. we found everything at the Hotel to be top notch, staff were very friendly and over and above helpfulness, Mohammed is the Hotel, he should have his wages doubled, we found the food very good with lots of choices each evening, plus being well cooked and served well. Pool area was also excellant, it was brilliant not to have to try and reserve a sunbed as there are plenty to be had at all times, plus the fact that there was ample cushions to go round for all. Hotel is extremely well cared for and very clean in all areas. We met lots of people who had been going there for years, they feel that is there 2nd home, we will definitely be returning there. Top marks. All I can say about the negative reports are that they pay for a 3 star but expect 6 star amenities, need I say more. Sheila & Tony Blyth
Grim in the extreme
from Bobbin
This hotel is grim - the only redeeming factor is the staff - all very very helpful and friendly. I feel bad about giving a bad review because the staff could not do enough for you - but I suppose it is not their hotel! The hotel does not deserve 3 stars - it is just awful - and we like to try and finD the good in everything!! Nothing has been done to the hotel since about 1975 - the pool area especially is is desperate need of attentioN/modernisation (it also gets no sun after about lunchtime) The rooms are basic and uninviting - just awful - grey tiled floors, breeze block balconies. The worst thing about this hotel is the food!!! Everything they tried to do - they did badly. Tomatoes - green - potatoes - hard jam - no fruit all sugar - greek salad - all green tomatoes and about 1 square inch of feta cheese - cereal - grim etc etc. Only stay here if - you want a base to stay, do not intend to eat ANY of the food and do not attach any importance whatsoever to room comfort. All that said we had a good time - due entirely to the great staff and the fact that Paphos is a brilliant place to stay - only stay at the Paphiessa if you get the hol at a bargain basement price!!!.
Why are people moaning! We had a studio apartment for 3 adults and it was basic, but totally adequate and spotlessly clean. Towels were changed every day and room was made up every day also. Entertainment team worked very hard and lets face it, it would be impossible to... more
