Wow! Everything has been thought of!
from AmberRambler
The Cortisen styles itself as a boutique type hotel and for us certainly lived up to its billing. We booked the Asian Spirit Suite which was just fabulous, with jacuzzi bath, massive "rain shower", huge flat screen TV, wonderful balcony with sun loungers and chairs, and huge comfy bed. The hotel has some lovely touches such as free DVD rental from the front desk (our room had a DVD player and stereo!). The bar/restaurant is stylish and the garden and grounds are beautiful, right down to the lake shore with comfortable outdoor furniture. The owner even has a speedboat and Harley motorbike for you to rent if you so desire! Ignore previous reviews saying the owner is unfriendly, we found him to be pleasant and helpful with a good sense of humour - he added a human touch to the hotel which is so often missing from these types of places. This hotel is certainly not for those on a budget but if you want to splash out on a truly memorable stay in the Wolfgangsee area then look no further - just make sure you pay that little extra and treat yourself to a suite for an ultimate romantic break! My girlfriend wants to go back for our honeymoon!
100% recommendation
from Tritontps
Superb hotel, individually owned and manged, which really shows. The rooms are modern, individual and furnished for every need. Restaurant is excellent with wines for all tastes. Most important, not just the owner, all the staff give you the personal touch and ensure all your needs are catered for. I cannot think of anything that was missing.
A great place to stay
from AlexandAlex
We had an excellent time. It's well worth going out of your way to go to the Cortisen. Location is unbeatable, and given all the freebies included in the price of the room, value for money was very good - free bike hire, free boat trips, free parking, DVDs and videos to hire, copius breakfast, afternoon cakes, etc. A lot of effort has gone into doing up and running this hotel. It's not stuffy, but relaxed and friendly. Rooms are very well apointed and Roland the manager and his team were charming. You can tell that they have been well schooled in the art of hospitality. The spa and sauna are impressive, too. Evening meal, given that it's a four star hotel, wasn't as cheap as you'll find in local restaurants, the food was fine, but not out of this world, and the choice of wines impressive. We will be back, if only to go for another early morning swim in the lake. Fantastic!
Felt very unwelcome
from DisappointedGuestX
We were very excited about staying at the Cortisen having read some great reviews and paying top dollar for a 4 star boutique hotel, but we couldn't wait to leave by the end of our week there. The hotel itself is lovely, the views are terrific and the location is excellent but it seems to me that this hotel has no idea what hospitality is or the concept of customer service! Even when we tried to constructively and politely complain to the owner manager that we had been made to feel like naughty children who were in everyone's way rather than welcomed as valued guests, he was incredibly rude and belligerent rather than trying to placate and understand. The staff were impatient and unhelpful (not all of them to be fair, at least 2 of the staff smiled at us a few times!). We actually saw one of the waiting staff escort a guest out of the dining room for accidentally clanging something and being berated like a schoolboy for it - wagging finger and the works! It was just not a relaxing experience. The main dishes in the evening were dreadful although the rest of the food was fine. We felt like the main meals had been prepared hours before and were being kept under a hot plate before serving. We won't be back.
Lovely hotel in quaint village
from Bren07
This was my first skiing holiday and after reading some of the reviews decided to book the Cortisen Hotel. Booked through a travel agent but then again after the advise of previous readers decided to contact the hotel directly about an upgrade. This was definately money well spent. Although the standard rooms are lovely the suites are something special. I stayed in the African Spirit Suite with a lovely view of the snow topped mountains and the lake, the weater was even nice enough to sit out on the balcony and take it all in. The room comes with a jacuzzi and possibly the best shower i have ever had in my life, it was like standing under a waterfall. Also provided in the room was a DVD player and a cd player. You could get recent release dvds from reception at no cost. This was a very special touch as far as i was concered as nearly all channels are in Austrian except Sky News and CNN. Staff in the hotel were very helpful and always greeted myself and my partner every morning and evening and enquired about our day. I did read reviews about the Manager / Owner and i do agree he is not the friendliest person in the world but i did not spend much time thinking about it and it did not affect my holiday in any way. He runs a tight ship and to his credit the hotel and staff are a credit to him. The food is also fantastic, good choice and also you should try the Austrian wines, really are very nice. The location of this hotel is perfect, the bus collects you from outside the door to bring you to the slopes and drops you back outside in the evening. Its right beside ProTravel where you get all you ski equipment. The town is small and not much is open during the winter but i was there for skiing so was not overly concerned about that. Salzberg is an hour away and is definatley worth a day trip. There are 2 slopes near enough, Postalm for beginners which is about 45 minutes drive and for the more advanced Gostau which is a bit further away. All in all it was a lovely stay in a very quaint village and would definately return and recommend to friends and family.
Exceptional Choice for Couples
from BernardHertfordshire
Well really it is difficult to know where to start! The location of this hotel is fabulous, right by the lakeside close to shops and the only 2 bars in town, moreover, right by the main pick-up point for skiing. Whilst we had been to Austria before we had not learnt to ski and would definitely recommend this location, as the slopes were great and the instructors even better. The basics aside we could not praise highly enough the quality of service provided by all the staff and the clear passion and pride of the owners to ensure guests enjoy their stay. Staff continually went the extra mile to help you and it was immediately obvious how well trained they were in the restaurant (right down to clearing and serving plates to the correct sides which only ever happens in top end UK restaurants!). In all truth, the food and wine really made our holiday - as it was truly outstanding. Every evening we were offered an innovative 5-course meal using local ingredients with a flair and creativity you rarely see and perfectly balanced in portion side - with a good wine list to match! We stayed in a lake view double room (which was good) but I would definitely recommend paying the extra for their suite rooms as these are truly 5* and very luxurious. The sauna and steam room area like all other aspects of this hotel were well thought-out and good quality (and definitely a must after a hard day on the slopes!) We would recommend this to couples that appreciate good service and fine wine/food. Definitely NOT one for small children, people wanting wild nights out or anyone with a passion for burger and chips when abroad! We would recommend visiting the hotel website to see for yourself the quality of what they offer.
excellent as usual
from Langtons
My husband and I have just spent a week in this lovely hotel. It is the third time we have stayed there and can absolutely recommend it for a completely relaxing break away. We booked through a holiday package then contacted the hotel to upgrade our room. It is well worth the extra to ask for a deluxe room, with either double shower or jacuzzi. The hotel also has a few luxurious suites in different themes which are ideal for a special treat. Pay a little extra for a lake view. You will not be disappointed. In these newly refurbished contemporary rooms there is also a seating area and cd and dvd player. Very comfortable and clean. All public areas are clean and create a very peaceful atmosphere. If you can drag yourself out of the comfy leather sofas in the lounge to the window, the views of the lake are beautiful. The staff are always welcoming and helpful and show an interest in how you are enjoying your stay. The food is very good with an excellent selection of cereals, fruits, nuts, juices breads, meats, cheeses and conserves for breakfast. If you prefer eggs, you only have to ask. Dinner is four courses and a salad bar with choice of three main courses, one of which is vegetarian. In order to create a peaceful atmosphere, the hotel does not take children under the age of twelve. We would definately return to the Cortisen and as we met up with several couples who had also been there at the same time last year, believe that is recommendation enough. We have noted previous comments about over heated rooms. The rooms are warm, especially if you are wearing ski gear, but if you turn down the heating and open a window you can easily adjust to suit yourself!
Wonderful Location, Food and View
from BBTravellers
We stayed at the Cortisen for our first ever skiing trip 3rd Feb for 1 week. On arrival it was late but the drive through St Wolfgang was still lovely such a quaint setting. We checked into the hotel very quickly and were told to come down to dinner when we were ready. Initial impressions great very clean and cosy. When we got into our room it had everything we needed very soft bed which I loved but takes a bit of getting used to if you prefer a firmer matress. Bathroom again everything you need. Food was spectacular set meal format for those on half board with a salad buffet. The food is rich and you might try some things your not used to but if you want fish fingers and chips every night then go to bognor!! To ski was about a 30-45 min free coach ride and was comfortable and a great skiing location for beginners. I believe there was another ski area near by for more advance skiiers but stil accesable by bus. The location was idillic pay for a lake view it is spectacular very peacefull. We were told it was peacefull as this is really a summer resort but I liked the quiet and serene atmosphere. A lot of the shops were closed or opened very limited hours so if you want shopping probably worth a day trip to salzberg. But there are 3 bars in the town for evening entertainment it is worth the stroll to Grabowskis (sorry spelling prob wrong) but it's the nicest bar. All in all this was a lovely trip the staff at the hotel are lovely always polite and very attentive. If you can afford it the suites available look lovely.
Not a traditional Austrian Hotel
from EnglandPenny
We have visited Austria on a number of occasions and have loved the traditional welcoming Austrian atmosphere. We unfortunately did not receive any at The Cortisen. The hotel staff were pleasant but not concerned with your stay; the manager was often on the phone at the reception desk and ignored you if you were waiting there. The room was at first glance nicely decorated, however on closer inspection the room was dirty, the bathroom was also dirty and the shower did not work properly. The bed was uncomfortable with springs poking through. The food was over processed and we believe from a packet. One night we were served pudding in a coffee cup! The buffet food for breakfast and salads in the evening once it had run out there was no more! The waiting staff wore jeans. We could have upgraded because as soon as we arrived the hotel owner gave us 3 sets of keys and told us to look at the rooms. Obviously the upgrades came at a cost so we declined. After a days skiing we wanted to use the relaxing sauna area but was told at 5pm by the manager that it was locked and he had not turned it on yet! The hotel looks fantastic in the brochure - but is nothing like that in reality.
lovely hotel
from Barrons
This is a lovely comfortable hotel in a fantastic position and the best thing is that they do not accept children under 12, which makes it very peaceful. The garden which leads down to the lake is very relaxing and well equipped with sun loungers and towels. We paid extra for a lake view room with balcony which was well worth the money as the views are wonderful. The staff are delightful (not at all rude as mentioned in previous reviews) particularly those in the dining room where the food is also very good. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone.
We were a party of 6 and were accommodated in first rate very modern suites overlooking the lake. The standard of all the suites was nothing short of exceptional and the cuisine very good. The staff were all very welcoming and put themselves out to make one feel at home;... more
