beware of thieves

Jan 2011, j9kaye

Having just read someone's review on the Berger Sport Hotel in Saalbach, it struck a cord which still bothers me to this day.
I too stayed at the Berger Sport Hotel in Saalbach during the first week in March 2010 and I too had something stolen from the ski/ski boot room. I had hired my skis which were Superior Skis and left them in the boot room each night. On around the 4th morning, my skis had been removed from the boot room. I reported them missing to the Hotel and the Ski Hire Shop, both of which said "leave it until the end of the week as they would probably be found and turn up." This however didn't happen and by the time I reported them missing to the Police, which I had to do for insurance purposes, I was informed that the Police needed around 48 hours to process the theft by which point my party and I were due to leave for the Airport. The whole experience ruined what was, for the first few days, a fantastic Holiday and in all the years I have been skiing, sometimes 2 & 3 times a year, I have never have my skis stolen and certainly never expected them to be stolen from a Hotel boot room.
As I said at the beginning of this review and regarding some other guest having things stolen fron the Berger Sport, I am a little disturbed at reading this.

We want to say a big thank you for such a large week! We thank the staff, and we will be back next summer, if not before it. Everything was great, the room was beautiful, the food were great, and the staff were very friendly and efficient. We recommend this hotel for a fantastic, and cheery atmosphere and an altogether pleasant experience.

  • Activities: Del Rossi, a very nice restaurant bar.
  • Good For: Ski

I just wanted to warn other people...
3 / 10
Mar 2008, Mr Neil McIndoe

I just wanted to warn other people about the issues we had with this hotel. The rooms are tiny!!!! and do not stay here if you do not like smoke! After 9pm the restaurant allows smoking so we had to ingest it with our main course and dessert every night. Very disappointed with this aspect.
We booked a small double. What a joke. The small double bed was up against a wall so you could only get out one side. We could only unpack one at a time as there was not enough room for both of us to stand up at the same time and move about. Beware of room 318!
We changed to a slightly larger (though still very small) room after one night but the bed was also up against a wall and it would only class as a single in most other hotels.
We would not rate this as 4 star - more like 2.5 if I was being generous.
The Crystal rep told us he has been trying to tell his company to take the hotel off their register as he gets complaints about the rooms every week.
The food was average but the service good. The Birds Eye frozen veg was an everpresent amusement to us at mealtimes.
The wine selection was not great so beware the local Austria wines. Not good!
The hotel is in a good location in the town so this helps with the other poorer aspects.

I first went to Saalbach on a School...
9 / 10
Dec 2006, Mr V A Le Gallez

I first went to Saalbach on a School trip in 1992 and fell in love with the place, so when in 2005 I had the opportunity to take my wife and 8 year old son skiing for Xmas, I chose Saalbach and the Berger Sport Hotel.
The Berger Sport couldn't be better placed, it is owned by the Berger Family who are committed to making your stay perfect.
I was amazed that the waiters, the Berger Boys, have never learned to ski because they have worked 7 days a week throughout the season all of their lives. After the first day they know what you drink, you know which table is yours and the food is amazing.
In the Hotel itself the decor was good, but a little dated, the pool and steam rooms were great.
The thing that clinched it for me, and the reason that we will only go to the Berger in future, not to mention the most amazing Skiing in Europe, was that on our first night, Xmas eve, we were late arriving.
The tour guide said that most Hotels stopped serving food at 9PM, but they may leave out some cold meat. We arrived at the Berger at 9:30PM. We were shown to our rooms and told that the restaurant had been kept open for us.
Now it is 9:45PM and they were prepared to cook us a 5 course meal with all the trimmings. At that time we couldn't eat all that, but that level of service and sincerity brought a tear to my eye and I will never forget them and hope see them all again soon.
