This family run hotel was in the centre of town. The room was typically austrian and very comfortable. All the staff from the managment down to the cleaners were friendly and helpful. The food was very good and plentiful and the free wine with our evening meal was good... more

The Hotel Fischer was brilliant. We travelled as a group of 8 in January 2004 and stayed in the Fischer for 7 nights. The accommodation was immaculately clean, food was fantastic and plentiful and all the staff were very helpful. The bar is a great place to unwind after a... more

Lovely hotel friendly staff
Great service from friendly, polite staff. We stayed in the suite, which was ample room for the two of us. The hotel is located in the centre of the square, ideal for access to the cable cars, train stations, shops and cafes. The warm welcome from Micheal, the great food, and friendley atmosphere, made a lovely, relaxing holiday.
Great value for money & really good location
Just got back from a week's trip to St Johann in Hotel Fischer. The hotel far surpassed expectations. We booked the cheapest room available (I think it was described as small double room with shower and toilet) but were surprised when we also had a shared balcony and the room was quite a good size. The staff were all really helpful and spoke perfect English. The food at the hotel was amazing and because we had the summertime package we got breakfast and dinner at the hotel, as well as getting the packed lunches so we didnt need to buy any food whilst there. I would think that the food would appeal to most people of all ages as there were 3 choices of main dinner course (inc veggie option) and 4 courses overall. The waitresses were really friendly and there was a great selection of free drinks with the meal. The only issue we had with the hotel was that the pillows were feather and wern't that comfortable...so if you like to have your head propped up then maybe take a travel pillow too! However, for this to be our only issue shows how great the hotel was! We didnt use the sauna or the bicycles (as there just isnt enough time in one week to do it all!) but when we went to the hotel Park (the sister hotel) for the weekly barbeque we saw all the bikes they had and they looked really good. On the Thomson & Crystal Mountains and Lakes websites there arn't enough photos of the hotel in my opinion, and not enough description of the location. The hotel is right next to the central square with several cafes. Just around the corner is the chemist and a Spar supermarket and the tourist info office. St Johann has so much to offer in terms of walking and cycling as well as having an efficient train line to kitzbuhel and other locations. I think that in winter season it would be a great ski resort and we would certainly consider going back to the Hotel again.
A home away from home
We first stayed in the Fischer in January 2008 with a large group of friends. They recommended the hotel and since we have gone again in Jan, Feb and March 2009. We have holidayed here as a lone couple, a large group of pals and as a family with young children. The hotel Fischer ticks all the blocks. The rooms are comfortable, clean and warm. The food is outstanding, with great choice and variety. The themed dinner nights (Italian and Tyrolean) are fun and tasty. The breakfast buffet is fantastic with hot and cold food to gear you up for a day on the piste. The staff are super friendly, accomodating and professional in serving your every need. Nothing is too much trouble as they go out of their way to keep guests happy and comfortable. It's worth a mention to add that they are brilliant with children. As for adults, the bar is the best bar in St Johann and the barmen create a wonderful balance between an early evening relaxing frosty Huber beer and their awesome later apres ski atmosphere. The owners are friendly and welcoming and have created the perfect package for holidaymakers who keep coming back for more (just as we have). The hotel is a ten minute walk from the slopes, but with the handy ski store room just minutes from the gondola life couldn't be easier. A trip to the Fischer is a real treat and holidays spent there have left us with only wonderful memories and new friends. I will continue to stay at the Fischer and recommend all to share in the magic of the Fischer home away from home.
Im one for trying new places, but I certainly would return here
Booked a week break with my wife through Crystal (who I can highly recommend), on the back of these reviews so I felt compelled to add my opinions on this wonderfully run hotel. Read all reviews on this hotel and you will get a fair idea whether it is for you or not. As with most reviews you need to give an unbiased opinion with negatives and positives. To find negatives with this hotel, you would need to pick holes...so here goes. The rooms I would say could benefit from a modernisation. That was painful to state as I feel like I am betraying the welcoming family Grander and his helpful staff, including the lovely cleaner who kept our room and the rest of the hotel spotless. Also, not sure if it was because we were tired from skiing but the beds felt extra comfortable! I'll keep the rest brief. Food was great. Simplicity of the meals made them all the better. Sitting at the same table everyday also meant we got to know everybody in the dining room. St Johann itself is not the liveliest of resorts, mainly confined to a handful of busy bars. The hotel's bar was one of the busiest which made it all the easier to have a few then stumble back up to the room. A few people we met stayed at the Park which they say was also a brilliant experience but most nights they were at our bar. Many of the locals and ski instructors choose the Fischer's bar as their preferred evening out. We were lucky enough to stay on the 3rd floor (room 306) which had the biggest balcony with dual aspect views of the mountains and the square with the lovely church. Please note that you can hear the church bells every hour which I actually found soothing, others may not find them as tranquil. Location was perfect as it was nearer the square than its sister hotel Park, with shops and a bit of life rather than bang on the slopes. You may think this is a negative when skiing but the fact you can store your equipment at the Park and then take a short walk (only 5 mins) back through the town is great. I have been on many holidays and many hotels, most have been a lot more modern and better finished but, for the first time I felt obliged to write a review. I think the whole experience of St Johann helped. My wife and I met some great people in the hotel and the ski school that we were going out with every night. By the end of the week I felt I had been living in the town for years as we knew almost everyone in the hotel and the resort! Would definitely recommend, especially for the price and would also recommend the resort as a whole. The runs were not as challenging to the advance skiers but the nearby train and ski gondolas open up a wider range of runs. The nearby Kitzbuhl makes for a great day out.
Fantastic Value for Money
My teenage daughter and I stayed at the Fischer for a weeks skiing and snowboarding. We went with Thomson Ski. The Hotel is located in the pedestrian area of town, and is in a good position for shops and bars. The staff are very welcoming, friendly and helpful. English is very well spoken. Meals are generous - we were on Half Board, and had a choice of 3 main courses daily. The Bar is very good, with a great selection of music, which gets louder as the evening passes. The bar staff are really nice and a little crazy! Make sure your room isn't above the bar, as you can hear the music 2 floors up! It didn't affect us too much, but light sleepers may not like it. Rooms are small and basic, but exceptionally clean. The shower was rather odd - a fibre-glass cubicle, so I would recommend a room with a bath. We had a balcony, which is shared with other rooms, and it was used as a fridge to cool everyones wine! St Johann Skischule was absolutely brilliant for boarding & skiing lessons - the instructors are really helpful to all abilities. They gave us so much confidence. The Hotel is about 10 minutes walk to the slopes, and there is a ski room at the sister Hotel Park, where you can leave your gear free of charge, which was a bonus. For a three star Hotel, it was perfect. If you like 4 star, go to the Hotel Park instead for it's location. The Hotel has a Sauna and Steam in the basement, as well as a really hot drying room. There is also a large childrens play area in the basement with plenty of toys. There is Wi-Fi in the lobby, and you can purchase a 24 hour connection for your laptop for €5.00. There is no wi-fi in the bedrooms. All in all, I would recommend the Fischer if you don't mind walking to the slopes!
Homely hotel
Booked the Fischer, after seeing the reviews here, as part of a skiing package through Crystal . The Fischer is a very well run, small, homely hotel. Food is generous, generally good and breakfasts are excellent. Lots of choice with a nice salad bar every evening and 5 course dinners. There is an Italian buffet on Tuesday which we found to be an "Austrian take on Italian" and a Tyrolean buffet on Thursday, very nice with a friendly accordionist. The staff all seem to enjoy their work and make the guests really welcome. We had rooms with balcony which cost slightly more than the basic rooms with Crystal, the rooms were a nice size, clean and functional. The hotel has a guest ski race on Friday using the timed slalom course normally reserved for the ski school, good fun. We liked the location, being in the pedestrianised centre of St Johann, which is a real town not a ski dormitory. It is a pleasant 10min stroll past interesting shops to the ski hire place where you leave your skis, then 5 mins uphill in ski boots to the gondola. Not to everyone's taste perhaps but we enjoyed the walk. St Johann is a charming place and the Fischer is well placed to enjoy this.
Very Welocoming Fischer
We stayed with family and friends at the Hotel Fischer over New Year and had a great time. The owner and family were very welcoming and made a big effort with New Year. The food is good although some of the party found it to be over seasoned (salt)! The rooms were fairly basic but clean and a decent size. The bar is pleasent although smokey which we brits aren't used to now. Overall great skiing holiday and the owner is very knowledgable re the local area. Would recommend!
Great Hotel!
We stayed (6 of us) in March. The Hotel was excellent. Michael and staff helped us with everything we asked for. They really seemed to enjoy what they did which can't be said about a lot of places I've been. Luckily the bar seemed to be one of the hubs so that was easy for us although worth checking out the Baren round the corner upstairs. A trip up the Huberbrau tower is worth it but they serve only beer really. The town is very pretty and traditional pretty quiet at night apart from a few bars but it's what you make it. Downsides are the [--] ski shop, the walk to the nursey slope and the fact they haven't got a smoking ban in yet! The skiing is OK for intermediates but it's quite easy to get to Kitsbuhel on the train which drops you at the Hanenkamm ski Gondola (It's the second train stop in Kitzbuhel!). Had a great time.
Going back for more!
Picked this hotel blind out of several choices that were offered to me by the travel agency. What a fantastic stay we had. The entire staff at the hotel, from the owner to the last waiter made our stay enjoyable. Everyone is very friendly and strive to make your stay enjoyable. I am taking my wife back again and we leave tomorrow to have another fantastic week of skiing and being pampered by the staff. This week the hotel is mainly occupied by Irish skiers on their vacation and they come to have a great time also. The night life is whatever you want to find, from a nice quite evening in the hotel bar to a ear shattering thumping music at other bars. Great places to stay while you enjoy the skiing available or come during the summer and hike around, the views are great!
Fantastic Week
We have just returned from the Hotel Fischer after booking a late Summer Saver deal and what a thoroughly enjoyable stay we had. It was our first time in Austria and we were unsure of what to expect but what a pleasant surprise. The hotel is run by a family which also run the nearby Park Hotel. It is right in the centre and the resort is in the centre of numerous valleys so that there are lots of accessible places. St Johann itself is a picturesque resort although the nightlife is low key. There are, however, plenty of bars. Our room was small but we had been told at the time of booking and, since we were hardly ever there, it did not bother us. You can choose larger rooms at a supplement. The hotel staff were efficient and friendly and I thought the food was very good. You can also order free packed lunches to take out with you every day. The hotel provides other freebies such as the use of the town Leisure Centre, bike hire, guided walks, free drinks with evening meals, discount on the gondola and a free trip! It really does provide good value. The scenery in the Tirol is beautiful and you can walk along the valley, where it is flat, or hike to higher ground if you are feeling more adventurous. We must have walked over 60 miles during our week's stay. We visited Salzburg, which is known as the Rome of the North , it was thoroughly enjoyable and I can recommend the Cafe Demel for delicious coffee, Strudl and Sachertorte. There is something for everyone in the Tirol and we shall definitely be going back for another visit to Austria.
