The Sporthotel at Ellmau is a wonderful place to relax and wind down after a day on the slopes. It is as close to the nursery slopes as you can get and is therefore great for people who are just learning to ski and don't want a huge trek to the ski school meeting place.
The hotel is large and comfortable with a wonderful public area which is enormous. There are lots of comfy sofas and chairs scattered around and it is an extremely relaxing atmosphere. The bar is fairly small but well stocked.
The room we stayed in was quite small, in fact the balcony was probably larger but it was comfortable and served our needs.
The food at the hotel is fabulous. There is a 5 course meal in the evening and you have to choose your food at breakfast. As well as the courses that you choose there is a great salad buffet, a dessert buffet and a huge selection of cheeses. The standard of food is excellent. The dining room is very large but it's split up into smaller areas so that you feel as if you're eating in intimate surroundings.
The hotel also has a swimming pool which is large enough for a good swim and it also has a mini Jacuzzi on one side so that you can let the bubbles bash away your aches and pains. You can also swim to a small outside pool, which is great when you're in the warm water surrounded by snow!
There are other wellbeing facilities and beauty facilities at the hotel and I'm sure it would make a great place for an indulgent summer holiday. The Jacuzzi at the hotel is Austrian style so beware that if you want to use it you need to go in naked, so it's not for everyone.
If you're on a ski holiday in Ellmau the free ski bus stops on the opposite side of the road to the hotel so it's very convenient.
All in all I would highly recommend this hotel for anyone who wants to have a bit of luxury and a nice warm, relaxing atmosphere on their holiday.

The Sport Hotel in Ellmau is a very big hotel with some 160 beds. It is most obviously big when one enters the lounge, or to be more exact, the lounges because there are many of them.
These range from the cosy to the newly built luxurious one with its wonderful view of the Wilder Kaiser mountain range, surely one of the most picturesque in Austria and the hotel has the best view there is.
We went in summer with Shearings but there were holiday makers from Inghams and Thomsons. Our room was the quietest we have ever stayed in – we asked for this – and at the rear of the hotel with a balconied view of the forested and green mountains with the railway going up it. It was typically Tyrolean being large, possessing of a settee as well as small table and seats.
The shower room was luxurious and the whole room spotlessly clean. The facilities of the hotel are luxurious with two pools, the cleanest we have encountered. The whirlpools and massage facilities are similarly top drawer, however their nudity policy was a tad off-putting (totally actually).
You get a bathrobe simply by phoning reception and it's delivered in seconds. The staff are uniformly polite and have excellent English. The food is the perfect. My wife is a vegetarian and this was a treat for her. A huge array of buffet salads, meats, fruits and sweets, together with a choice of imaginative and well cooked courses would have obtained the coveted two rosettes if this were a UK hotel, certainly given the choice.
Here you benefit from the size of the hotel. Free brandy one evening and free cake and coffee on the lovely terrace one afternoon! We will most certainly return very soon.
