Originally booked for the 4* sister hotel the Delfim but got upgraded to a garden room at the 5* Alvor Praia. The room was immaculate, with maid service two or three times a day. All staff were helpful and efficient but not especially friendly (I think someone has told them that being 5* means they have to be aloof). The food and drink was good but hotel bar prices were 30-50% dearer than the bars in Alvor.
The hotel is in a beautiful cliff-top setting with a lift down to the beach. Guests are given towels for use on the beach or for around the rather chilly hotel pool. Sunbeds on the beach in front of the hotel were free of charge and the beach was beautifully clean, soft sand gently shelving to the sea.
The 5 minute Taxi journey to the centre of Alvor was less than €4. There were many restaurants, at which there was a wide range of food available, including plenty of Portuguese dishes. The bars were not so cosmopolitan; the majority specialising in Karaoke, Sky Sports or Irish 'themed' entertainment but nearly all staffed by friendly, multi-lingual Portuguese. I think if we'd travelled in high season, this 'strip' of bars would have been a place to avoid but it was fairly quiet by the second week of October.
The weather was a fairly constant sunny 28c, with a lovely cooling breeze coming from the Atlantic. All in all a fantastically chilled out holiday. I would definitely return to this resort (although not during peak times) and would recommend it for anyone who wants a relaxing beach holiday.

Jun 2007, Mrs D Walker

A nice hotel but not 5 star! Water was only left in the rooms on the first night and then after that we had to order it up from room service.
The room was well presented and the bathroom spacious and clean. Our air-conditioning was too low and we had sleepless nights due to the heat- we hate to think what it would be like in the height of summer!
Breakfast was lovely but the waiters could be a bit slow in clearing tables and serving coffee. We didn't eat in the hotel restaurant we preferred to go to the beach huts which served delicious food at a much better price.
Overall I would recommend this hotel but do not expect the service to be 5 star. Alvor itself is lovely and the beaches are pristine.

Theyl will not match an online price. The bedding was tatty and soiled!
Whilst we were on the veranda having a private moment, the maids decided to enter our room without knocking and begin the turn down service.
I was first terrified then angry and humiliated! The maids just laughed in my face! The Manager neither apologised nor made the staff apologise to us.

We were given a fruit basket that could only be used as decoration, for the fruit was very old and mushy.
The breakfast was some of the best I have ever had. But when the cook made my omelette and it was not cooked properly, I wouldn’t eat it. The manager yelled at the poor cook in front of everyone.
I would not recommend this hotel, we will never stay in a hotel that cares so little about their employees or their guests.

Nov 2006, Mr L McCoy

You can not fault the location or the friendliness of the staff, however, visiting out of season (November) you can see that they do much of the "tarting up" before the start of the summer as some of the paint work needed updating.
The building appears to be built in the 70's, and although fantastic, does need some updating in the less frequented areas.
I don't recall seeing the tennis courts but did see a driving range and deshevled mini-golf range.
The outdoor pool was great and the private beach was fantastic, the food tremendous (although pricey).
Another thing to think about is that if you would like some variety to your nightlife then it's a 15 minute walk into the small town of Alvor - which is no bad thing as you aren't kept awake at night (unless you want to be).
In summary:
Location - fantastic
Service - great
Value for money - good
Hotel facilities - good
Hotel decor - good
Hotel structure - needs attention.
