Not so
Hotel Poseidon in Makrigianni Street has received very positive reviews on this website. The friendliness of the staff is especially revered. I feel compelled to write and say that this is different from our recent experience of this hotel. My parents and I went there to stay for one week. We had booked a room with two twin beds for three adults, but were met with a room containing three single beds and no floor space. It is beyond question that the room did not correspond to the booking specification. One family member went to the front desk to point this out and was met with a response of such an aggressive and threatening nature that it quite frankly put a damper on the start of the holiday. The room was, however, exchanged for a room with the correct number and size of beds, although no refund was given for the night spent in the inferior room. The hotel standard was extremely poor. The second room was a decent size, but the furniture was old and tired and the bathroom flooded when showering. Water temperature was highly variable and unpredictable - more so than in a neighbouring hotel. The air vent from the next door bathroom opened on to our cooking facilities. The television was small and the signal disappeared from time to time. The air condition worked well, which was a blessing considering the level of road noise from the very busy Makrigianni Street. The pool was pointless; three swimming strokes from one side to the other. If you want to swim on your holiday, in short, you have to do it somewhere other than at this hotel. Hotel Poseidon charges a relatively low price, but represents poor value compared to neighbouring alternatives. The low price means a mixed clientele, which included young men and women on binge-drinking holidays. The hotel arranged twice-weekly karaoke nights which quite literally could be heard from several blocks away. During our particular stay, the karaoke was surreally interrupted by a mixture of football songs and vomiting noises from the neighbouring guests. I realise that this may be an entirely personal thing, but my family felt that our expectations of being met by an especially friendly staff were totally ridiculed. It is our opinion that the staff were not friendly, nor were they neutral or merely indifferent: they were positively rude, insulting and unpleasant. We have never been treated in this way during any of our previous travels. I would not recommend this hotel to my worst enemy. I hasten to add the following speculation. It may be that there is a difference in how you are treated as a guest if you arrive with one of the larger tour operators like Thompsons, compared to if you are a small family whose opinion is of little consequence. The length of experience of the hotel staff was pointed out to us as a measure of their competence. I humbly suggest that customer satisfaction constitutes one other relevant measure, and that perhaps it is time to update the hotel staff competence to encompass such a measure.
Poseidon Update
I reviewed this hotel last year after an absence of nearly 3 years but have just returned from there after 2 weeks with my grown up children and first grandchild who is 9 months old. We had concerns about taking such a young one abroad but decided that we would be safe at Poseidon as we know them all well and they would be able to help out in the event of problem. In truth we didn't have any problems, but they still went the extra mile to make it a really great holiday. This includes going out and buying a brand new microwave for my son's room as they needed one to sterilize bottles and heat up food for the baby. We also had use of the managers car for a trip to the beach to give us extra flexibilty and Mum was taken to the supermarket to do some baby type shopping by the managers wife. They all made a big fuss of the baby and nothing was too much trouble for them. The place is as friendly and well run as ever and if you want a safe place for a first trip abroad with a little one I can certainly recommend this one. Mind you it is still a place for adults as well with a great atmosphere in the bar at night and lots going on.
Friendly people
I stayed here with a friend and found the most endearing quality is that because the hotel is small you are not just a number to the family that run the place. We were actually called by name and found the family to be most friendly and helpful. Worth noting that although the hotel says it has tea making facilities what this actually means is a kettle and cups. No tea, milk or sugar was provided. It might have been a nice touch to supply enough for that first cuppa! Everything else was much as one would expect in Greece. Basic facilities, towels and bed covers that have seen better days, but nevertheless do the job and more than made up for by the friendly atmosphere not found in bigger, more pristine places. A bonus was that the air conditioning was not charged for and although in May we did not use it very much I would imagine this will be greatly appreciated by guests later in the year. The Greek/Kareoke night was good fun. Not the normal Greek dancers bought in so if you are expecting this you may be disappointed. The food was delicious though and Ang, the proprieter and his brother do some really good turns on the kareoke.
The staff are 5* .... the hotel a bit lacking
Myself (37), my wife (33), my Brother & Sister in Law (40,42) stayed in the Hotel side of this complex from the 6th to 20th June 2007, bed and breakfast, booked through Thomas Cook. First impressions weren't that good. The room wasn't that great; it was a twin room, and the beds, while you can normally push them together, you can't here, due to them sitting in frames. The bathroom, is TINY; the sink, toilet & shower cubicle are squashed right in, and it was a bit of a pain during the two weeks. Also, this hotel is situated on one of the main roads leading into Kos Town. Our room was facing this main road, and unfortunately this meant a lot of noise from those really annoying single geared mopeds, of which there seems to be millions in Kos ! Also, there must be a couple of bins collected right outside the hotel, as the binmen can collect anytime between 1am & 6am. At that time in the morning, the noise is somewhat augmented ...... The breakfast was a bit limited too; consisting of Cereal, Toast, choice of Cheese & Ham, Hard Boiled Egss, Preserves, Tea, Coffee and fruit juice, and that's just about your lot ! It would have been nice if there had been a little more choice, maybe some fruit perhaps. The pool is quite small but very nice and kept very clean at all times. The area surrounding it is not that spacious, but we didn't have the usual problem of towels on loungers at the crack of dawn, so could always get one after breakfast. However, only a limited number were in the sun at any one time due to the way it was positioned during the day. If more people wanted loungers it could become a problem. The Bar area and lounge are very nice; plenty of tables and chairs, and a large TV + several smaller TV's dotted around. OK, here's the good bit ...... the staff here are SUPERB. I don't think I have ever stayed at a hotel where ALL the staff, from the the owner to the maids were so friendly. They couldn't do enough for you, nothing was too much trouble and everyone always had a smile. They wanted to talk to you, whether it be 1st thing in the morning, or last thing at night and all times in between. You got to know each personally, and by the time we left the hotel, we felt like each were friends. Like I said, that is not something you get generally !! The Manager of the Hotel is the most enthusiastic I have come across. His energy is limitless ! There were a couple of theme nights while we were there, namely the Karaoke/BBQ night (every Saturday) and there was also a Greek night. The Karaoke / BBQ night was excellent, really good value for money at €8 per person, and the Greek night was fun too, with a live band & dancers getting everyone involved. The location of the hotel in towards the marina end of Kos Town, about 15 minutes walk to the Old Town of Kos, which is very nice. There are plenty of restaurants to eat at too; we stayed mainly near the hotel when eating out on the evening, and we found a couple of crackers, which you must try if you stay here. The first, a small traditional Greek Cuisine restaurant, only about 5 minutes walk towards the Marina is called "Novina" (I think!!) Gorgeous Greek food, and cheap too ! The other one was called "Tonys Pizza & Pasta" ... not the most inventive name for an Italian Restaurant, but the food was exquisite. This is right on the beach front, between the harbour and the marina. Overall, we thought that Kos was a very very nice island, and the people are so friendly. I have given the Poseidon Hotel a 4/5, for the staff, otherwise it would have been 3. I would go back to this hotel without a doubt despite what I have said, however, I would ask them if they could put us in a room facing the pool, and not the road !! If anyone wants any more info, you can contact me. Stay here and enjoy Kos !
bijou and compact but clean and sufficient
Went here on a late deal and feel that we got very good value for money, might have been a bit disappointed with the small size of the apartment had we paid full price. The one bed apartment had 2 balconys overlooking a garden of orange, lemon and fig trees and the neighbouring complex's pool (which looked lovely). This was a good quiet position as overlooking the Poseidon's pool seemed noisier. The hotel only provides breakfast and a pool snack bar so you either have to self cater (for which the apartments have 2 electric rings) or eat out. We found that the Karis Taverna opposite offered smashing food at the right price. We also ate at The Avra (next to Tourist Info) and The Fish House (go up the old steps opposite the anchor at the harbour). The Avra is on the beach, during the day they offer free sun loungers with beach service and in the evening the combination of lovely food and location makes for romance! The Avra also does a greek night if you want to participate in a "traditional" night. The Fish House is off the water but is equally if not more romantic. Kos is a beautiful island, the people are friendly, if you try to speak a little greek they will practically adopt you! The weather was perfect except for a ten minute rain shower. Avoid booking any tours through your company rep. Tours booked through any of the offices in Kos Town are cheaper and offer better value for money. Buy your souveniers in the beautiful mountain village of Zia, the choice is better and the prices lower. If you want to go to Paradise (Bubble) Beach, just get the local bus from the Village Bus Station, you will save yourself a small fortune! Take the Blue Tourist Train to The Asclepion, take a picnic and spend a couple of hours exploring these exceptional ruins and admiring the view. To conclude, The Poseidon may not be palatial but for travellers on a budget it is great value for money. The location is pretty good too, just a 15 minute stroll to the main drag or a 5 euro ride on a taxi.
Family-friendly hotel
The Australian family who own and run this hotel make it what it is. They are extremely helpful, hospitable and friendly as well as being great fun when it comes to quiz nights and karaoke singalongs! We stayed in the apartment side of the hotel which was very well appointed. The rooms were air conditioned and spacious with plenty of cupboard, wardrobe and drawer space. The hairdryer in the bathroom wasn't the best I've ever used and the shower tended to flood the bathroom but thats about it really. The hotel is ideally situated close to the beach and a pleasant 20 minute stroll into the old part of Kos which has a buzzing cosmopolitan atmosphere about its narrow lively streets. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone - family or couples or singles and I would recommend the resort of Kos Town too - we were very pleasantly surprised by its cosmopolitan feel and array of things to do and see.
Great Hotel
My husband and I have just returned from a great week at the Poseidon Hotel, Kos. It is situated about a 10min walk from Kos town so ideal if you wish to be away from the hustle and bustle of a town. Kos town is, however, clean and quite good for a night out on the tiles! We found the hotel was kept very clean and staff to be really friendly and ensured that everyone enjoyed themselves no matter what time of day or night (we did not feel the need to go into Kos town). It is a family run hotel with some staff that have been there for a long time so they actually get to know you as people-not just another customer/number (like some larger hotels). Nothing was ever a problem! We had such a good time that we didn't think a week was long enough. We will return!!!! Highly recommended****
fantastic family atmosphere
There were 25 in our group ages ranging between 80-2. Was concerned size of pool from photo, it is a small and atmospheric area where you can get breakfasts, snacks and drinks all day. Did find a good size pool very near by. The family who own this hotel are really lovely people, they couldn't do enough to make our stay enjoyable. This was the case with all guests. We used the hotel alot in the evenings usually at the beginning and end. Had two enjoyable karaokee evenings where the staff put on a great show, two great Greek evenings, and they also put on a bbq when karaokee evenings on costing approx £5. We were quite close to the beach and a good walk into the town. The walk was not too bad approx 20 mins. There were plenty of good restaurants on the way. There is so much to do in Kos Town we need to go again and deffinately stay here. When one of my children felt unwell and I needed a chemist late at night the owner found out which chemist was open and took me there himself. All of the staff made sure they all said goodbye to us personally. We all had a wonderful holiday here and would recommend it to anyone.
small & freindly
My husband and I stayed at this hotel for two weeks in May and June. Awonderful place to stay, friendly owners and staff, very clean, a bit of noice in the side street but apart from that brilliant, thank you for the welcome we enjoyed our two week stay. The breakfast was lovely and plentiful, everyone was friendly and made us welcome from the start.
Great place for a relaxing trip
This is a very clean friendly hotel and apartment complex, run by Australian Greeks, so there are no language problems. It is situated in a very convenient position in the town, with easy access on foot to beaches, marina, harbour and ancient ruins. Breakfast is supplied to hotel guests, and a snack bar is open during day time, selling basically fast foods. The apartment - like all in Greece, we've found - doesn't offer the quantity or quality of equipment found in Spain, and we bought one or two things such as big cups, glasses, etc. to help us while we were there. The best supermarket is not the one opposite. Turn right from the hotel, and take the first left until you could to the Agora Supermarket. Also next to this is an excellent restaurant LOT (Lots of Taste!). In this same area we recommend Safari Car Hire - cheapest and 100% insurance cover. Kos Town has lots to offer visitors, and it has a very relaxing laid-back atmosphere. By contrast, a 45 min. boat trip from Kos Harbour will land you in the centre of Bodrum, Turkey - excellent for a day out.
