miserable bunch
5 / 10
Oct 2008, kybela

this place was deserted for the month of august-no wonder, what a miserable bunch!!!!!!!! if you dare swim in the the pool "filter man" popped up from nowhere incase you swam near his precious filter and scowled until you felt so uncomfortable you left-oh,so thats why the pool was deserted! plus there was no bar open at all,no snacks, nothing.the good points-nice rooms, very clean and close to the beach.we previously stayed at the morfo, troulos, much nicer.skiathos is a beautifil island, perfect for families, buses every 20 mins till 1.00amish,gorgeous quiet harbour(re:traffic).just choose a different place to stay if you like pleasant people and a pool.

I booked a week here through Travel Republic for the first week of July 2008 and I was delighted with everything. As a single traveller I had to book a twin room but I wasn’t penalised for this – it cost about £300 for the week.
Staff were helpful and friendly and my room was large, air conditioned with its own kitchenette and a pool view balcony. The Fridge, kettle and electric hob weren’t metered at all and were put to good use – as was the extremely sparse collection of cutlery! The rooms are kept clean daily and fresh linen and towels are provided.
The only down side was the lack of evening meals. Breakfast is served each day but that’s your lot as far as food is concerned (perhaps it’s just because it wasn’t high season?). Their bar doesn’t do cocktails either but next door is a small cocktail bar and next to that is a supermarket that’s happy to change your travellers cheques (another service Korali doesn’t offer). Further up and down the coast road are plenty of restaurants and the beach has a variety of places to eat in the day and during the evening.
Like most hotels in Skiathos, Korali is on main road which is really useful for buses and taxis. Skiathos town is 15 mins away by car where the parking is free but extremely congested.
The airport is on the fringes of Skiathos town and I since I hadn’t booked an airport transfer (quoted at 67 Euros by Travel Republic) I jumped in a taxi which costs 16 Euro each way to Korali (at the time of writing).
Since the runway is extremely short some planes have to take off with insufficient fuel to get home, refuelling on mainland Greece so if you hate flying it’s worth knowing that you may take off and land twice on the way home.
You can hire cars and mopeds all over Skiathos but I went for a cheapo Citroen Saxo for 180 Euro from SixT, just up the road. It’s a two minute walk and is a well known company so I felt relatively safe using my credit card there. Petrol can be bought next door. Don’t make the same mistake as me – I bought a full tank of fuel and returned it a week later with half a tank left. The island’s only about 10 miles long and has few roads. You really won’t use much petrol, no matter how much you drive.
The beach is about 150yds down a narrow road that runs alongside the apartments. You’ll be there in minutes and it has a number of open air restaurants. Sounds good but it can get windy and while I was there one of the huge square parasols lifted clear out of its base, blew down the beach and landed on some un-wary sun bathers. A rare event but it illustrates that the romance of a star lit beach could easily be tainted by wind-blown sand on your food, or indeed beach furniture on your face.
As for the beach, the sea water is crystal clear and the beach is ideal for snorkellers as there’s a combination of soft sand and rocky outcrops that encourages fish. It’s worth taking a bread roll with you as the fish will eat from your hand.
Daily cruises moor on the beach so you can go on a round-island trip. I didn’t bother but it’s got to be worth a try!
All in all I loved it. As a single traveller it was a great get away for a week in a cheap, friendly place.

Skiathos is lovely and the apartments are very good for position for the beach and local restaurants and bars. Skiathos town is just 25 mins away by the frequent bus service and we would recommend for those that like greek islands and their usual standards to use Troulos as a base. The town is one of the classic greek capitols and is a very busy ferry port which is great to sit and watch all the activity when a boat arrives which seems to be every hour or so! Try the fish tavervas overlooking the ferry port! The hotel taverva was particularly good with the young family cooking and serving for guests.
