think I must be missing something here. We have just returned from the Hotel Madeleine, in Obergurgl, Austria and found the ‘4* hotel’ to be nothing better than a 2nd rate guest house. We booked this particular hotel because of the ‘Wellness/Relaxation’ centre, which in the Thompson brochure and the Hotel’s brochure stated that this was for over 16’s only. During our stay, a German family arrived, and their children were suffered by many: running up and down the corridors at 7.30am screaming and banging on doors, playing in the lift, and running riot in the Wellness centre unaccompanied. When this was brought to the landlady’s attention, she immediately took on a bombastic attitude, claiming that the sauna/jacuzzi was for the use of children, it was open all day (3pm - 7pm!) and if we didn’t like it, take it up with our tour rep (another story!) Then the landlord involved himself. Apparently WE were rude and abusive to his wife, and he made it obvious that we weren't welcome in the hotel. On the back of that, the other grievances which arose were that the ‘Champagne’ breakfast was cheap sparkling wine - if available (Spar supermarket @ €3.49), If you didn’t get to the Italian Buffet early, you wouldn’t get any food, as the landlady said “the food goes early so don’t be late!”, and the Cheese board wouldn’t be replenished unless the guests asked. I could go on, but I don’t have the space! Is this 4*? Not in my experience! In 30 years of traveling, this is the worst hotel I have visited. Perhaps if the ‘landlord & landlady’ (the owners), spent less time smoking, drinking and chatting to their German friends at the bar and more time attending the the guests (reception was usually unmanned) I may have given this ‘B&B’ a better report (...no I wouldn’t). As it is, I couldn’t and wouldn’t recommend this place to my worst enemy. What should have been a very Merry Christmas turned into a waste of time and money!

Recommended for:
* Germans
* Friends and relations of the owners
* People who enjoy dated, cramped, over heated, under illuminated, uncomfortable rooms/beds
* Panoramic views of the kitchen bins, the car park and the rear of the police station
* Bad service
* The Smoky bar
* Families with unruly children
* People who are out all day and want basic food with extortionately priced drink (still water -
€4.95 / .75L, wine from €30
Not recommended for:
* People who expect value for money and service
* People who enjoy their food (often undercooked and bland)
* People who don’t like dumplings - savoury or other wise, or clear soup most nights.
