A very good hotel in a charming city

"We stayed 3 nights at the hotel Cala Marina. It is perfectly located for a first step when you land at Palermo airport , especially late as we did ; an easy drive of half an hour and you are there . The hotel has a good location in the lovely city of Castelmare , along the marina but at the end of it , so it is a bit less busy around . The hotel is a new building , small , not a 'tourist factory' at all , the contact with the staff are more personal . The rooms are nice , the bathrooms too wich have a very modern and perfect equipment ; all the floors are in beautiful ceramics like only the italians make !The air conditionned is efficient and rather silent.

The self service breakfast is just .. great , various and good : cheese, ham , croissants , cookies, corn flakes, youghurts, fruits , fruit juices , etc .... if you take it a bit late , it really makes a brunch !

All the members of the team were very kind , always ready to help; they spoke a perfect english and even french .

The hotel has accords with 2 restaurants in the city in Castemare : you buy a ticket at the hotel and it allows you a full meal at the restaurant , with first course, main course , dessert , beverages not included : 19 euros for a fish meal at the restaurant ' La Cambusa' , 17 euros for a meat meal. We tried the fish meal , it was good , and we spared 2 or 3 euros on teh price we would have payed not coming from the hotel .

We found only a little dark point : it is a bit noisy : inside because of the ceramics on the floor which don't filtrate the sounds , and outside because of the 'passegiata' during the night , but except that , it was perfect : this hotel is a very good rate quality/price and we warmly recommend it .

Small charmer

"We picked Cala Marina just by walking around the harbor part of the town. We stayed one night in a room with a view of the small harbor (92e)and a second time in a side room (76e)but pleasant also. Front room definatley best. the staff was very good to us. Arranged for a car to take us to entrance of the nature preserve We walked to San Vito Golfo but altho we had a room for the night it was May day and the town was like Fort Luaderdale at spring break. The receptionist called Cala Marina and they sent another car to bring us back! That trip was expensive (70euros) but we felt as tho we were rescued and returned to paradise. The desk person also used internet to figure out how to get a bus to Erice."

Loved the Cala Marina

"We stayed in this hotel for two nights. The room was very clean, the bathroom was renovated and modern, and the staff was helpful and pleasant. We also liked variety of daily breakfast. It is true that there was not any TV channels in English but it did not spoil our getaway."

Great place

"Me and my husband, 33 and 35, stayed at this hotel for three days. The hotel is clean and comfortable and the service is very good. When we got off at the railway station and called for directions to the hotel, the hotel staff offered to pick us up free of charge since it was a Sunday and buses would be running at a much slower pace than usual.

Nicola and Dario were super at their jobs. They greeted us with smiles and we enjoyed talking to them about Sicily and its amazing sites.

The rooms were quite comfortable and clean. The only minus is that the shower is quite a tight fit.

While the hotel is on the main strip on the harbor where it can get rather noisy at night (until about 3 am with vespas and partygoers at restaurants and clubs) the hotel is at the end of the strip, far enough away from the noise and close enough to walk home (about five minutes).

Good position, nice place

"This is a recently built hotel at the edge of the marina, with lovely views over the bay. There is very little traffic outside, so it is peaceful. The rooms are comfortable and clean, as are the bathrooms. This was the only place we stayed in Sicily where there was an extra pillow (in the wardrobe, French style)! The hotel is decorated in a style somewhere between English country house and Italian, but it works fine.

Room rates are very reasonable -they do not include breakfast, but who could compain when this is only €3 per person for a self service buffet. There is no restaurant within the hotel, but there are several bars and restaurants within easy walking distance.

Would recommend booking a seaview room with balcony.

The staff were all very pleasant and friendly.

Castellamare gets a bad press in 'lonely planet' , but that was obviously written before this hotel was opened. It is certainly a handy place to stay if you do not want to be too far from Palermo airport but don't want to be in the city.

Wonderful in All Ways

"We stayed here for the first 5 nights of our 2-week trip through Sicily ... and then decided to return for our last 3 nights as well because we liked everything about it. We had a side room initially (quieter) but returned to a larger harbor-facing room that we liked even better for its view. Personnel is young and attentive (unlimited cappuccini in the morning with the abundant breakfast), the rooms and baths new and clean, and the location super. The town was wonderful with many authentic elements untouched by tourism and was close to some super hiking and swimming spots (the harbor itself in town is not appropriate for swimming - this is not a beach destination). We are already dreaming of our return."

OK, with some BUT's

"The Cala Maria is a small hotel on the seaside of Castellammare del Golfo, and we stayed for one

night there. We have somewhat mixed feelings on this hotel, maybe because the first impression was a rather bad one - the room that we got smelled like an ashtray - and I don't mean that somebody had a cigarette there inside the night before, but heavy chain smoking with closed windows for a prolonged time (as a former smoker I can tell the difference). It seemed the personnel didn't even consider it necessary to open the window

(and of course didn't use any air fresheners or other smell-killing measures), and there was no other room available, so we had to put up with it.

Most of the personnel didn't speak any english, so communication was rather rough. The advertised wireless LAN was apparently only available in a room that was occupied during the day, and the receptionist said that we could use the internet room in the evening (which we didn't, so we don't know what would have awaited us there).

The room itself was OK, with a fridge, a safe and a somewhat small TV (but obviously only with 3 italian TV channels). It was also pretty quit during the night, and we didn't hear much from the other guests. The bathroom was clean and modern. The best thing was that the room had a large balcony, so it was possible to sit outside in the afternoon sun.

The breakfast was a typical sicilian breakfast - there were croissants, small rolls, a large selection of small cakes and sweets, but no cheese, eggs or meat.

The hotel was in the middle of the pack among the sicilian hotels we visited (all between 70 and 100 Euros a night) and could have been a nice stay hadn't the room smelled so bad. However, the Cetarium (which is 150m from the Cala Maria) where we also stayed one night was much nicer, so if you have a choice then you should visit the Cetarium first.

Perfect Location

"The Cala Marina is everything it promises to be on its website. Ideally placed at the harbor with spotless rooms, ample free parking and generous breakfast. If your budget allows, go for one of the front facing rooms with balcony.

The hotel is within staggering distance of numerous restaurants and bars and we tried just about all of them. A couple of the bars get pretty lively as the evening progresses, but you are far enough away for noise not to be an issue. We will be back – no negative remarks at all.

Coolest place in Sicily.

"This is as good a hotel as we have stayed in in 20 years of travelling in Europe. They do the simple things well. The rooms are clean and comfy, the breakfast is fresh, the aspect of the 3 front rooms is smashing, and the service is good. Guests from many lands. The location is the best of the hotels in town, always something to look at in the port opposite, not as noisy as on the main street, but close to bars and restaurants and shops. Any time we asked the staff something , it was done with enthusiasm but not fuss. We stayed 9 nights and chilled out, walked round town, hired a car and explored western Sicily. The day we left a previous guest had sent a big bouquet of flowers to the staff, so we are not the only ones who loved it!

It`s a geat hotel in a wonderful town in a glorious bay surrounded by fantastic mountains.

Great Hotel

"My fiance and I stayed at the Cala Marina in June 2003. It was my first time to Sicily and I was very pleased with the hotel and the service. My fiance's father is from Castellammare del Golfo, so having him along on our trip made it even more special. Actually, we are returning to Castellammare del Golfo next month (Sept. 06) to be married. And of course we will be staying at the Hotel Cala Marina once again!"
