I read a number of very negative reviews on a number of websites prior to spending a week at the Hotel Austria, which caused me to be very worried about what to expect. However, my husband and I had a lovely holiday and would definately stay at the Hotel again. The... more

I will start with the positive, the food is good, the staff in general are very welcoming and friendly. I am afraid that is it ! Before I address the biggest problem with the hotel, the manager, there are some smaller disappointing gripes I would like to mention, firstly... more

Unfortunately, we can fully understand prior complaints about the behaviour of the owner's family. They are unfriendly and indifferent. Good staff, like waiters, are treated very rude and it is not much better with guests... Due to the location of the Hotel, it can not be... more

Fairly smart 4* hotel up a short slope close to the centre of the village. Very clean and comfortable, staff helpful and spoke fairly good English. We had evening meals in the sister hotel, the Austria, (reached through a short tunnel) and the food was superb, though the... more

The hotel is situated up a hill about 5 minutes walk off the main street of the resort. Access to and from the ski slopes is very convenient - almost immediately opposite the front of the hotel. Despite concerns following what we had read in earlier reports that the... more

One to avoid (The Manageress that is!)
We only booked 3 nights in this hotel in order that we could experience Obergurgl, with our main holiday in Seefeld. We checked out after 2 nights though. The hotel is very dark with the childrens play room, leisure facilities including swimming pool all located underground. This unfortunately created a rather oppressive atmosphere. It was however, very clean and the menu was acceptable without being great. We did not feel at all welcome though by the manageress.Whether she objects to families staying in her hotel or she was upset that we only booked in for 3 nights I don't know, but we wouldn't go there again. Austria is full of charming family run hotels - this unfortunately is not one of them.
Great Hotel let down by the Manageress
I was disappointed with our stay at the Austria. While it is well situated at the base of the slopes and has excellent leisure facilities, we found our bedrooms to be dark and outdated. I am aware that some rooms must have been refurbished as our room bore no resemblance to the lovely room shown in the brochure/website. Food was good however on occasion dinner was a little rich for our tastes. The staff were kind and accommodating but the Manageress was abrupt to the point of rudeness, she was very unhelpful on arrival and this did not improve throughout our stay. The Austria is not a cheap option and I would prefer to spend my money where my family is made to feel welcome and my business is appreciated.
Pretty place, wonderful mountain views
Beautiful scenery with ski lifts ideally located to get up into the mountains. Village not that big so not ideal for shoppers. Not much to do if you take children and they are not walkers. Swimming pool is deep with no shallow end. We were booked for the Bellevue Hotel but transferred at late notice to the Austria Hotel which was lovely. Both hotels are owned and managed by the same family. Great rooms, good views and fantastic food. The restaurant staff were extremely helpful and very friendly. Unfortunately the family that owns the hotel spoiled things for us. There were a number of examples of blatant rudeness which made us all feel very uncomfortable. Not what you want when on holiday with your family. As a result would definitely not return.
the almost perfect ski ing holiday
we spent an excellent week in the bellevue hotel the rooms were comfortable if alittle small for 4 the leisure facilities fantastic the food delicious and the staff delightful ok so the manager is aliittle brusque she is also extremely efficient and as a result the hotel runs smoothly the position of the hotel is perfect for getting on the fabulous slopes
Good ... but the manager!!!
Firstly, my family enjoyed our holiday very much. Great snow, wonderful views, good quality rooms and delicious food. However, to echo some of the previous comments the manageress/ owner wow! . My response to her rudenesss swung from irritation and anger to hysteria. How can anyone run such a great Hotel. I and my family were regularly ignored and made to feel uncomfortable by her manner throughout our week. Thankfully the rest of the staff did not take the lead from her. They were courteous, charming and attentive. I can only think that they were trained elsewhere. Next year?? back to the wonderful staff at The Hotel Hochfilzer in Ellmau.
What a friendly and lovely hotel
We found the hotel to be very friendly, warm and no "dark tunnel". The rooms were not over generous in size but the views were wonderful and we were to tired to worry too much about their size ! The meals were in the Austria which was no great problem and the sauna, steam rooms etc were wonderful after a hard day on the slopes. There was a lovely atmosphere and we were made very welcome. Obergurgl is a fabulous village and while I'm sure there are other very good hotels there, we will probably return to the Bellevue or Austria again in the future.
Don't go here !
We wanted to go to Obergurgl having heard about the beautiful walks and the wonderful scenery in this area. These reports were absolutely correct as unfortunately were the two reviews on this site. I wish we had taken notice. The first room we were shown was dark and dingy and cramped and having travelled extensively in Austria and sampled their usually beautiful airy bright rooms, this was definitely not typical ! I think the manager is probably self obsessed, there were smiling pictures of her everywhere , sadly something we never experienced. She was frequently, hostile and rude. I asked for different seating in the dining area for breakfast as my husband is somewhat handicapped for getting into small spaces. All we wanted was a chair but like the other reviewers, were treated like naughty children in an institution rather than guests in a hotel. Never again. Yes, the views were nice, the lounge was spacious but beyond that, there was nothing to recommend this hotel especially when there are so many wondeful friendly hotels in Austria.
Very friendly family run hotel
I'm amazed at the comments from earlier reviews. Most of these comments are untrue. The hotel staff, and particularly the hotel manager, were extremely helpful and friendly during our recent stay. The food was excellent and very well presented. The rooms were very clean and spacious, though true they appear a little dark at first. The lounge areas are among the largest we have ever seen in a ski resort. The views from the lounge and many bedroons are superb. The so called "dark tunnel" is brightly lit and is typical of many hotel arrangements in small Austrian villages. The interconnecting tunnel also leads to the swimming pool, sauna, health centre and beauty parlour - in the winter this must be a major plus to be able to vist additional bars etc. without getting cold or wet. Of course, if you pay extra, then you can stay in the Hotel Austria, however it is a high price to pay for a short walk...
The worst hotel I have stayed in
This hotel was the worst I have stayed in. The rooms were extremely dark. Food was provided in a different hotel reached by a series of dark, intimidating underground tunnels! The staff were extremely unfriendly. The manager was very abrupt and often downright rude. We felt like naughty schoolchildren the whole time. I loved Obergurgl and have been back a view times staying in the Jenewein instead which was great.
Hotel Belleview
We visited Obergurgl and stayed at the hotel Belleview. The hotel affords a very nice position in the village but we were very disappointed by the dark cramped rooms with shared balconies. We asked for an upgrade and were given a suite which was better but obviously we had to pay extra. We had to go to the Hotel Austria for the main evening meal which was not explained when we booked. The main problem was the management. Totally unhelpful and downright hostile. We felt very uncomfortable for the duration of our stay and would have changed hotels if at all possible. Just one other warning about Obergurgl. It is very high and can affect those with breathing problems. Howver it is a beautiful place and if we could go back, I would go to a different hotel.
