Rooms were average European size (small by American standards) and the beds were extremely hard. The buffet breakfast was OK but not great and didn't change the whole time we were there. PROS - The hotel was pretty and the staff very helpful. The hamam (Turkish bath)... more

Nice, clean, convenient to attractions
I spent a night here courtesy of Turkish Airlines after a flight delay. The hotel is efficient, clean, and has recently renovated rooms that are quite comfortable. The service is reasonably professional and competent but certainly not personal or terribly friendly. It is only a 10 minute walk from the main tourist attractions such as the Aga Sophia and Blue Mosque. The dinner was good but certainly not memorable and likewise the breakfast was perfectly adequate. They rate themselves as a four star hotel which is exaggerated but I'd give them a solid three star rating. I'd stay again without complaint though I believe with a little work you could find a more charming hotel in the same basic area and price range.
grand yavuz hotel, istanbul, turkey
We stayed at this hotel from 06-11-2007/09-11-2007 The hotel is more than you expect it to be from the outsite. The building looks "normal" from the outsite, but it is luxurous at the insite! Maybe we had one of the smallest rooms (414) and no vew on the sea of Marmara, but it is nice decorated, new and clean and everything you need is available. New bathroom with bad and a great shower! Good beds (boxsprings)! The entrance and stairs are really beautiful (only the people at the reception could be a little bit friendlier -no smiles-, but yes, they are correct and polite). Beautiful, noiseless and speed lifts. From the breakfast location you can see the remains of an old cistern and they made a winebar there. Very nice. From the (rooftop)restaurant you have a beautiful vew on the sea of Marmara. The hotel is situated down on the Piyerloti Caddesi and only a 5 minutes walk from one of the mainstreets, Grand Bazar and the Hippodrome, Blue Mosque and Haya Sofia Mosque. The situation of the hotel is not so good for disabled people because you have to deal with difference in heights (streets) surrounding the hotel. We (my daughter) and I had a very nice stay there and we recommend it!
Best choice
I work for airline and stay in Istanbul often. I stayed most of the hotels in the same area but this was the best choice. The rooms, quality of the food, service view and all other faclities of the hotel was really great. The price was really reasonable as we have been charged around 70 Euro for a nice room with bath tub. I have also had a Turkish massage on the marble and really felt great. And additiional to this the hotel has live music most of the nights. Grand Yavuz will be my only choice in Istanbul for my all next stays.
You could probably do better
Due to severe fog in Geneva the incoming plane to Istanbul was late and, as a result, I missed my connecting flight to Bishkek in Istanbul. However, Turkish Airlines very kindly put me up in the Grand Yavuz free-of-charge. The displayed rate was 120 US a night for a single room. Although I quite liked the hotel as a whole, the room was pretty average and appallingly illuminated. I certainly would not have been happy if I had paid 120 US for the room. On a positive note, the staff were pleasant enough and the hotel has a roof-top restaurant with lovely views of the Blue Mosque and the Bosphorous. Moreover, the hotel's lounge bar is also quite comfortable and attractive. What I liked most about the establishment, however, is its location on a hill nested among small shops, bars and cafes. If you have already booked this hotel, I am sure that you will have a great time in beautiful Istanbul, but if not, you could probably get more for your hard-earned money in Istanbul.
Very OK
This hotel has its pros and cons. PROS 1) Great Location 2) Good decor 3) Good Hammam Service 4) Good Hair Saloon CONS 1) Reception staff can be curt and un concerned 2) Air Conditioning is a problem in many rooms. Overall if you are going to be out and come back to relax then it does have a nice room with nice big bath... as long as you can forget the some of the receptinist it is all good.
Want to make your Istanbul experience HORRIBLE - Stay at Grand Yavuz
I loved the trip to Turkey and the only thing that busted my elated state of mind was the stay at the hotel. It was pretty hot and the air conditioning was purposely switched off by the hotel from 9 am to 6 pm everyday. The reception staff had the audacity to come forward with this info asking us to be out of the hotel the whole day so that we dont have to bear the brunt of the heat wave...Talk about a cordial reception!!!! Though we complained constantly, they did nothing to help us out or to switch on the airconditioning. The breakfast was very sub standard and the coffee was more like water + some diluted liquid which is flavoured with coffee beans. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone and though i would love to go back to Istanbul ....its bye bye to Grand Yavuz. ONE OF THE WORST HOTELS I HAVE EVER STAYED IN
Four Star - I think not
The first room we were shown was so small you couln't turn around in it. We asked for another room and this was acceptable in size. Yes it was clean and yes we did have to pay extra for the safe chip but not a huge amount and at the end of our stay we were given half of this amount back. The air conditioning was a laugh. It was barely luke warm if you were lucky and we happened to choose the week they decided to have a heat wave. The breakfast was also not as described - certainly not a hot buffet by any standard. Only hot stuff was hard boiled eggs and a slice of tomato with a piece of cheese on top. It was truly boring and to add insult to injury we were invited to have either orange or carrot juice when we entered the dining room then they brought a form over to our table for us to sign with our room number and when we enquired what for, were told that we had to pay for the juice. We are well seasoned travellers and have travelled all over the world and in no other hotel, 5 star or budget have ever been asked to pay extra for breakfast juice. There were no other juices on offer so it was this or nothing. On principle, we chose nothing. They certainly do not deserve a 4 star rating and I would never recommend this hotel to anyone.
Great hotel
We stayed at this hotel for 5 days. The rooms were modern and clean and the staff was very helpful. We had to arrnage a switch of rooms which was done with no problems. The breakfast buffet was satisfying. The only down side that we could identify was that the hotel is difficult to reach by taxi and cab drivers didn't really seem to be familiar with Piyer Loti Cad. where the hotel is located.
Excellent location, excellent breakfast.
The Grand Yavuz was one of our hotel options when booking a package on the internet. Not too cheap, not too spendy. Yes, it's in the middle of a fairly big, steep hill, but you can take a variety of off-shoots up to the road with the tram, so there's no need to climb straight up. It is the perfect location. You can literally walk to the Grand Bazaar in 10 minutes, the Blue Mosque in 10 and the tram in less time than that. And the good news is that when you're ready to be done for the night, it's a downhill walk home! The breakfast is substantial, definitely enough to fill you up without weighing you down. We will definitely be back to Istanbul, and would seriously consider staying with the Grand Yavuz again.
love the grand yavuz hotel
we arrived at the grand yavuz hotel and were warmly welcomed. the first room that they showed us had a smell in the bathroom and after knowing that you can change rooms, we asked. No problem. We then had an inside room, with a wonderful view, and a bit of seaview. the room was very clean and the staff was so helpful. They helped us get the ferry trip on the Bosphorous, how to walk to the Grand Bazaar and anything we needed. the best part was the location. I like it quiet, as to the street noise and this was a bit up the hill and quiet. it reminds me of SF ontop a quiet hill. LOVED the location. couldn't have asked for a better hotel.
