My husband and I and our 1-year-old daughter have just returned from a week at Mistral Mare. We booked last minute and didn’t read any reviews, our mistake!
We wanted a chilled holiday, which we got, but we were expecting some entertainment. There was NONE!!! And I just felt I had to to write a review to make people whith Children aware!
The views from the hotel rooms and dining areas are stunning and the hotel rooms are ok and kept clean, although they didn’t have a cot available, so my one-year-old daughter slept on a mattress on the floor. The location of the hotel is beautiful; it stands on a mountain overlooking the sea. However, it is very isolated and it’s an exhausting 15-minuet trek to the village of Istron (where the hotel is located, not Agios Nikolas as described), which is small with very few places to go and not very pram friendly. Agios Nikolas is only a short bus ride and worth visiting, it’s beautiful with lots to do.
However our biggest problem was that there was no daytime/evening entertainment, apart from the swimming pool, the children had nothing at all to do except run around the bar and restaurant areas, which didn’t go down too well with the staff or some of the other guests. But you can’t keep a young child caged in their pram all day and night.
There are many very steep steps leading to the hotel and even using the steps to the roof top pool area is daunting. It is really not suitable for anyone elderly, infirm or young children- in fact it could be very dangerous. There is a very small lift in the hotel, however, once we got to the 3rd floor we still had to carry the pram, baby and bags down more steps to get to our room, not very practical at all.
There are absolutely no areas for children to play in and I found myself chasing my little girl around, very concerned she might fall down the steps and constantly on edge as I was very aware some couples had booked their holiday believing the hotel to be Adults only, which I strongly believe it should be.
The bar staff were pleasant but the others were rude and abrupt, maybe just there way, but I would also agree with other reviewer who says that the attitude of staff is that we should be grateful for staying here.
The all-inclusive drinks finish at 10:45pm prompt. Anything you brought after was very expensive and of poor quality. Coffee was only at breakfast and then from 4-5pm?? The food in the pool bar was very poor, so we just never bothered. We had to buy towels, as they are not included, never have we had to do that before on an all-inclusive holiday.
The food was fine, not very varied and got a little monotonous and many Greek families staying there informed us that it wasn’t very traditional.
If you are looking for a fun, lively holiday, or if you are elderly or have children then this isn’t the place to go, it really isn’t suitable. However, if you’re after a very chilled, quiet, relaxing break with lovely views, then this may be for you.
Personally we don’t feel this is a 4 star hotel but it is ok value if you get a cheap deal. But it is most definitely not suitable for children.

We arrived late and were directed to a room that was described as "standard" but was definitely sub-standard. If you'd swung a cat in it, the cat would have had a nasty headache. It also looked out on a cliff face and other parts of the building all within a few feet. When we went back downstairs, the receptionist leapt on us and said that we could have an upgrade to a sea view for another 105 euros. We'd have paid anything not to have to stay in the pit so accepted and coughed up. It felt like a bit of a set-up to us. To be fair the next room was lovely, large with superb view and air conditioning.
We had mixed feelings about the hotel. The pool area was fine although probably overcrowded in July/August. The bar and dining room staff were really great with a good sense of humour. On the other hand, the food started well but seemed to go downhill during the week, perhaps the chef was getting to the end of her budget. She probably did the best she could with what she was allowed. They were very strict on hours, dinner was from6-8pm and it was tough luck if you walked ina few minutes after 8, they usually tried to lock the door anyway. This was a bit early for us and seemed strange for Greece. They were also very understaffed and the pool bar had to close at lunchtime to allow the barmaid to rush down to the dining room bar, she also doubled up as a table clearer. One drink only at a time and the drinks were definitely watered down but OK, apart from the beer, that was truly disgusting.
It was a hard trek to the beach especially on the way back although you could take the long way round up the road (still a climb). We only found the Panorama Taverna at the end of the holiday which was a shame, brilliant food, unwatered drinks (although the free raki was a bit of a killer) and a real personality in charge. I think we would visit the area again although not the Mistral Mare (I still have nightmares about those steps)

Having read some of the reviews before I went, I was not expecting anything good from this hotel. How wrong I was!
From the moment we arrived we were treated with politeness and found all the staff to be pleasant and helpful.
The food was good quality and varied. Ok, sometimes it was warm instead of hot but that depended on the time you picked to eat. Some guests were complaining but that seemed to be the British - no wonder we are known as a nation of whingers.
As I have experienced before on all inclusive, the drinks were weak but the beer was good. Not going on holiday to get "slaughtered" every night meant that we weren't bothered by the weak drinks and had a really good, relaxing holiday.
The views are amazing and we really enjoyed the beach. Yes, the path is steep but if you take your time and stop to admire the view now and again on the way up, it isn't too bad.
If you want a lively, drunken holiday go somewhere else and leave this hotel to the people that like a civilised, friendly place. I will certainly be going back.

Do not go to this hotel unless you...

Do not go to this hotel unless you want to spend extra money on food and drinks.
Not reading any reviews before we went apart from the hotel details advertised by Travel Republic. I found that this hotel needs a lot to be desired.
The rooms basic but very clean, most of the staff are friendly. The Management need to learn to relax and not watch holiday makers or staff to the extent they do they even have cameras round the bar and pool also other areas, I think there are 12 in total.
The pool area is mostly free of people as there are no mattress for the sun loungers, by 1 hr of being on them you wish you hadn't bothered and as for food round the pool area, it consists of a toasted cheese & ham sandwich which has already been made up and put in the fridge and can only be got at certain times as it shuts down between 1.30-2.30 pm also between 4-5pm you can have a bit of cake or a biscuits.
As we decided to go all inclusive I was very disappointed as the food was very basic and not much variety. So we went down to the local town and had a good meal and some real alcohol in the Panama restaurant, the food was delicious and very reasonable, as were the drinks and the staff were fun.
The drink in the hotel seem as if it had been watered down, most people were saying they have never been up to the bar so many times and not felt drunk, also you were only allowed one drink at a time.
The buses run every hour that’s if they turn up or stop for you, a cab to Agi Nick cost 15 Euros each way and when you get into the cabs the drivers say so you’re escaping from prison, and that’s how it felt at times.
The Med Hotel rep was as helpful as a wet dish rag, she was only interested in booking trips and there only a few, she inform us that we may have to re book our flights home and the tel no is in the Med hand book, but forgot to tell us there was a local code, when I told her we cannot get through she just shrugged her shoulders.
I will never recommend this hotel to any one, they do say the Mistral Hotel is the tightest of all the Hotels that Med Hotel owns in Crete and that came from other guests in other hotels, it is a shame as the beaches and views are lovely.

This is a great place for the price if you just want to relax on holiday. There was never any trouble getting a sunbed by the pool whatever the time of day. The views were spectacular, food and drink was ok for the price we paid which was only £500 per person for 2 weeks all inclusive. The only real downside was that there was not any evening entertainment, but it was a short walk into the nearest town where there was plenty to do.
I would highly recommend this for someone on a budget who just wants to relax and read a few books (I read 12 books in my time there).

We've just come back from our...

Sep 2006, Mr A Visitor

We've just come back from our week’s holiday in Crete staying at the Mistral Hotel in (or near!) Istron, a smallish resort about 10km from Aghios Nikolaos. We booked it as a late deal through Apollo Travel, All Inclusive, although the agent organise flights and transfers separately as the actual holiday was with Med hotels who just provide accommodation. The agents were actually very good in explaining the hotel was not in Aghios Nik. but about 10km away, and 12euros by taxi, so we were under no allusions about the position. They made it clear the hotel was in Istron. We visited the Medhotels website and had a chance to view it first and it all looked very nice. As we were stuck with a night flight, which was a bit of a pain, we got there at about 6am having had little sleep. Be warned, you will be the last drop off for the transfer bus, about 2 hours extra travelling. Anyway, when we arrived the room was spacious, with a good sized balcony, TV, aircon (wait for it!) and good clean beds and towels. When the sun rose we found the most magnificent view over a sheltered bay with a sandy beach looking across to Ag Nik. in the distance. No exaggeration, it is one of the best views I've ever seen from a hotel. We overlooked a small pool (there is another at the far end) on a terrace with bar and loungers. The All Inclusive 'Deal' We have done AI once before and found it suited us, so were looking forward to the ease of not having to carry cash about. Unfortunately here there were just too many petty restrictions. The AI hours for drinks was 11-23.00, finishing too early, especially for a hotel a bit out on a limb. The pool bars opened for restricted hours in the morning and afternoon, around 11am - 1.30pm and 3pm to 5pm. The food was very repetitive and choice was limited, breakfast the same every day, and lunch and dinner being a choice of pasta, mystery meat in brown fluid, with or without chips, all lukewarm. Butter/marg. is only there at breakfast, and you need it, the bread is very dry, it's this kind of tightness that's just irritating. Coffee/tea is breakfast and again between 4-5pm, any other part of the day you pay for it. Water is by the glass, not the bottle which doesn't guarantee its origin (some people who got gut-ache stopped drinking it and got strangely better...I'll say no more). When a 0.5l bottle only costs 25cents (18p) is there any need for this? The local drinks were ok, beer was cold and fine, but the local wine was very poor indeed, and the local spirits all of mysterious origin, the 'bacardi' more like a rum flavour than actual rum, all were in identical bottles and had name like 'Celebrated Peacoock' (sic), perhaps a new breed of drinks exclusive to the all inclusive? I did hear someone say they had tanked a lot of drink the night before and had stayed oddly sober. Daily cocktail was in a big bowl on the bar, and was usually of a different colour rather than taste from the previous day! Daytime snacks were restricted to hotdogs and sandwiches, bread painfully dry. To sum up, it really felt like the AI deal was manipulated at every turn. Sure we had a late deal and we didn't exactly pay top cash, but to make the food and drink so dreary to the point of avoiding it, that's just not on. The Hotel Ambiance I have just read in the other existing review for this hotel that it was an exclusively German resort only opened up to the British market this year. This pans out about right, the guests were predominantly German, there were a few of us Brits, but we all seemed to be at the far end of the hotel together. You did feel a little marginalised, no fault of the other guests, but it was more geared to them, signs and TV all in German. The only thing is you tend to get stared at, which is annoying and rude, but something the Germans seemed oblivious to until my partner Tara poked her tongue out at them! Childish maybe, but it seemed to work. We found the staff friendly enough on the whole, but well disciplined in the limits of the AI deal. Bar staff (George) nice chap but on his own all the time so you had to queue a bit for drinks, stress, not his fault! The agent said there was no evening entertainment and in view of what we've seen before, well meaning but basically poor we didn't think this would matter, but it does! It is a pleasant distraction whilst you're enjoying your free drinks, when it's not there and you're with upwards of 60 middle aged Germans sitting quietly playing cards you start to climb the walls with boredom. Come 11pm everyone goes to bed. This is dull on a level I can't begin to describe, it comes to something when you'll forsake free booze and go off to a bar elsewhere for signs of life. It is probably that our expectations are different, but if you have any sense never do AI with no entertainment, you will never get the benefit. Aircon was not in the deal, and this is the first time in 4 visits to Greek Islands we've had to pay for it and at 6 euros a day it's steep. We paid for just the last day due to sunburn, no other Brit did, we really vote with our feet! Once again, no need for that. The Hotel Itself Overall the hotel was nice, the two pools were cleaned every day but were both cold, although that's pretty refreshing as temperatures even this late in the season were very high 20's. The best part (and worst) part was it's position. It is carved into a mountainside and the views were spectacular, the beach below had the clearest water, like a pool. The price of these views was the walking. The beach is only about 200m away, but is straight down a very steep path, if you are a bit unfit or elderly you will find this hard work getting back up again. I am not joking. The village is about 300m away once again down a steep hill and around a rather nasty unlit bend in the road, a bit hairy to be honest. Same applies, if you have a bit of trouble walking avoid this place or shell out on taxis, it is a long and hard walk back up. By and large the hotel was clean and rooms good and well kept. The mini mart is stupifyingly overpriced, bottled water sold at four times shop price, they couldn't overcharge on fags which was a relief. I've said it before; no need for this is there? Istron Village Istron itself was clearly winding down for the end of the season, there were a fair few bars but few people in them. Night life not exactly jumping. For food try the 'Kavos' Taverna second on left down the hill from the hotel, owner a very nice chap and if your waiting for a bus opposite go over there and have a beer, he has a bus timetable! Drinks we found to be on the pricey side, but shop around they have 2 for 1 happy hours and some places are simply more reasonable than others. We didn't go to many, but the Sports Bar was friendly and cheap, and the 'Pub' had a 2for1 which made it at least reasonable. Outside of these hours 4 Euros (£2.85) for a beer is way way too much. Like I said, it was winding down season so it wouldn't be fair to comment too far, august apparently things are a lot different. Things are very spread out, so be prepared for that long walk again. Plenty of shops, not too touristy either, and one does locally produced Raki which is real firewater. Aghios Nikoloas We took the bus into Ag. Nik a couple of times (1 Euro each) once for the evening and on the Wednesday morning for the market. It is well worth the trip, the town has a lot more bars and restaurants and a pretty lake in the middle. We were there on 'National Tourism Day' (27/09/04) and there was a live concert and a firework display in the evening. We went on the 'Alexander Terrace Bar' above the lake and got ratted, regular free shots and excellent music. The market is a local one, so expect mostly fruit and veg, although there are a fair number of clothing stalls. If you get there a bit early there is a tan coloured dog that will adopt you and follow you relentlessly. Don't worry, he's harmless. All in all a nice looking resort, but once again a bit hilly. Good shops. To sum up! All in all a good relaxing holiday a bit spoilt by a hotel with a mean attitude working the all inclusive system far too much. The beach was narrow but clean with water like blue glass, people were friendly on the whole and laid back. Found it priciest of all the Greek islands I've been to though, but as always shop around in bars and restaurants, you'll do better. Be seriously warned about the hills though, they are not for the faint hearted, and whilst the distances don't sound much the gradients are horrific, take a torch for night time. I would recommend Crete, but I wouldn't recommend the Mistral unless you really do pay absolute bottom price.
