Hostal Gat Xino

Nice idea but delivers short on its promises. Room was TINY and the bright green bathroom was aleady looking a bit tired and in need of a fresh coat of paint. TV recption was poor and it felt like a prison cell rather than a comfortable room. Breakfast was awful, staff seemed to want to get you out of there ASAP and were bad at bringing refills of milk jugs and drinks for the 'buffet'. Stayed for 2 nights at Hostal Gat Xino in second week of April. This hostal (more like a hotel really) is in a fantastic location. We walked everywhere. Don't be put off by reviews of the 'dodgy' area on other websites (we felt safe at all times) - it was exactly what we were looking for - slightly studenty, very arty, cosmopolitan area with a real buzz - loads of quirky bars (especially on Carrer Joaquin Costa), galleries, close to the main market, lots of funky clothes shops etc). My sister and I went to Barcelona for the first time on January 7th and were a little worried based on some reviews we'd read of the area and its shabby hotels. So we took a chance and booked at the Gat Xino, figuring it was new and looked stylish. We were SO happy when we arrived. The street it's on is a bit grotty, but it's incredibly central... we walked everywhere. And once you are buzzed in (24-hour video security), you're totally safe.
