Pamporovo Hotel Reviews
" The skiing in 'Pamporovo' was... "
Submitted By: Mr Jw WilliamsonEverything apart from the food (you should always ask what something is!) was better than I ever could of imagined and everyone at the ski school was a sensation.
I also had Teddy as my ski instructor and she was amazing as I imagine all of the staff were.
Everyone gets on with each other and there’s a fantastic environment surrounding the mountain and the resort!
I strongly recommend skiing in Pamporovo as it is a very reasonable price for the greatest holiday you will ever experience.

Submitted By: Miss M CopeThe hotel was great. Staff fine all but 2/3 food good a little cool when served but the staff did say to warm it up if we wished. Resort itself was good, especially the Italian restaurant, bj's bar. White hart pub good it served carling.
Ski school was fantastic, our instructor Teddy was great once you realised which one was which between herself and her twin Nelly. Teddy did a brilliant job of keeping us 12 in line between all the laughs and snow balling most of our group did.
On the whole we had the best week we have ever had and are booking up again for next year along with friends of ours and we hope to stay at Pamporovo hotel again. Up on the mountain the food we had was great could not complain at all.
Over all it was well worth what we paid for a brilliant week, especially as it as my first time skiing.

Submitted By: skybird1. We were forced to stay and sleep in deplorable conditions in the Pamporovo Hotel for 7 nights. The room was very dirty, musty, dusty and smelly and had bed bugs hibernating in the bedspreads. (Room 710).
2. We were subjected to breathing in dust for a week while staying in the room leading to lung irritation.
3. We were unable to sleep due to the exceptionally loud music from the hotel disco which vibrated up through the beds in the room from 11pm to 4.15am each night causing us to be completely and utterly exhausted.
4. We were unable to have a bath / shower when we came in from the ski resort due to the lack of hot water between 4pm and 7pm.
5. The heating / radiator did not work in our room for the week.
6. The hair dryer did not work and was also filthy dirty.
7. The mini bar was filthy dirty and dusty and unstocked.
8. Initially there were no curtains in the room – the staff eventually put up a pair of dusty dirty curtains.
9. The sink was blocked for the first day.
10. There was no stopper for the bath – eventually the staff gave us a stopper with no chain which was very difficult to lift as it was flush with the drain outlet.
11. There were bed bugs in the bed spread in which one of us sustained 3 bites while sitting on the bed spread on the Thursday.
12. There were no light bulbs in the bedside lamps.
13. The standard and variety of the food in the hotel was very poor, especially the dinners. We ate out in local restaurants most evenings.
14. We were unable to swim in the hotel pool as the pool water temperature was only 17 degrees Celsius when we arrived on Sunday the 14th of January. By Thursday the 18th of January the water had only reached 20 degrees Celsius. Normal pool water temperature should be 28 degrees Celsius.
15. We were informed by the staff at the leisure suite that there was a local charge of 15 lev to use the Jacuzzi and 15 lev to use the steam room or the sauna for 15 minutes.
16. The staff were very rude and ignorant.
17. The ski school and pistes remained opened despite the lack of snow and the dangerous icy conditions. At the beginning of the week there were 15 in the class, by Thursday there were only 2.
Our ski instructor only skied with the advanced skiers in the class down the icy slopes / runs. As we did not want to ski down the treacherous icy runs with the tarmac and stones of the roads/slopes exposed, we were abandoned and left to our own devices.
As a result we did not get any ski instruction for 3 days.
The following is a detailed account of our disastrous trip to the 5 star Pamporovo Hotel.
On Saturday the 13th of January we departed 2 hours late for our flight to Plovdiv. On arrival we had a further 2 hour delay to retrieve our luggage at the terminal. Eventually we arrived at our hotel at 5.30am on Sunday the 14th of January.
Upon receiving our room key 710 we went up on the lift to the top (6th) floor. We then had to walk up a flight of stairs to the 7th floor which was very dirty and dusty and also unsafe due to the cracked tiles and loose hand railings by the stairs.
When we reached our room, we walked in and were utterly dismayed to see the filth, dirt, dust and bad smell we were expected to sleep in.
We turned around and immediately went back downstairs with our bags to reception and asked to be moved to a different room. The reception staff practically ignored us and told us to “Go to bed, see your rep in the morning”.
We told her this was unacceptable but she refused to accommodate us. As it was now 6.30am, we were exhausted and had no choice but walk back up to our room.
At 9am we met our rep and told him of the unacceptable living conditions we were expected to stay in and he said that he would sort out a room for us and that we would have another room when we came back from the ski resort.
We arrived back to the hotel only to find we were still stuck with room 710. The rep said he was sorry but there were no other rooms available in the hotel and that he could not move us to another hotel.
He said that he had organised curtains to be put up on the windows, a fan heater to be delivered to the room (which never worked) and the sink in the bathroom to be unblocked. He also said that he would speak to the swimming pool attendants and ask them to raise the temperature of the pool water.
He said that was the best he could do. We told him this was unacceptable. We felt that the level of dirt, dust, mould and the bad smell of stale air both in the room and the corridor was indicative of a long period of un-use. We took pictures of the dirt and filth of the room.
Each day the rep was at the hotel, we asked him to move us to a different room or different hotel, but each day we were told it was impossible due to the hotel being fully booked out.
We had to lie in our beds with the window open wide every night, despite the cold night time temperatures, due to the bad smell in the room. We had to remove the bed spreads from the beds as they were very smelly and lie in our beds with our clothes on, just to keep us warm.
We were unable to sleep due to the exceptionally loud disco music which vibrated throughout our room.
Each evening, we complained at reception that there was no hot water in our bathroom when we returned to our room at 4pm. The receptionist told us one evening that there had been a “blackout” in the afternoon one day and that was why there was no hot water and that there were “technical problems” with the water the other days.
On Wednesday we went to the main reception and told the receptionist that the railing on the stairs leading to the 7th floor was very dangerous as it was broken and very loose. The top railing had come out of its holding brackets.
The receptionist got someone to fix the top railing but the main frame of the railing remained broken and loose for the week. The tiles holding the railing remained cracked.
The steps leading up to the 7th floor were also dirty and dusty. There was dirty linen and towels thrown at the bottom of the steps.
Having had very little sleep all week due to the hotel disco blaring with loud vibrating music every night between 11pm and 4.15am, having had no hot water to have a bath or shower until after 7pm, having been bit by bed bugs and having been breathing in dirty, dusty, musty and smelly air for a week, we definitely would not recommend this hotel to customers.
The Pamporovo Hotel is not a 5 star hotel. We wouldn’t even give it 1 star.
" Where do I start.
I went... "
I went to Bulgaria with my boyfriend, parents and little sister, we just got back last week.
My boyfriend and I are well travelled but we normally travel independently this time we went with a package holiday, booked with Balkan holidays.
From the start we have had problems; our flight was under booked so we flew via Cardiff to pick up some extra passengers.
We had a delay in Birmingham Airport through customs so people were starving on the plane even looking forward to the plane food. I have never seen such bad food or heard so many people complain, dried out chicken and some sweet corn.
Little did we know this was just this start of things to come.
After an excessively bumping landing we arrived and were transported like cattle to the hotel. On the bus we were told by people that the hotel had building works something we were not advised before hand.
To be honest this did not impact me personally as we were out on the slopes most of the day, however the night clubs do not exists that is what they are building and I could not find a gym. So do not believe what you see in the brochure.
You have to pay extra to use the pool, sauna etc, in fact anything u want to use you pay extra for.
The food! We arrived latish and went straight down to the buffet. We were greeted with mean staff, no drinks (they are extra even tap water), and cold nasty food. I can not tell you how gutted we were at this point.
I have recently been to Montenegro and the food there was excellent, they have the ingredients they just don’t know how to use them.
The food actually got better as time went on, the best part by far is the salad bar (which lucky for me I love), the hot food was consistency bad but the cakes are pretty tasty.
Coffee and water were provided on the first few nights but when they realised people wanted them they started charging. We spent Christmas day in Bulgaria, where we were provided with a special meal, which we now find out cost us an extra £30 supplement on our bill.
Needless to say it was pretty nasty. We were bundled in the dinning room with so many people you could not move your arms to eat, the staff were rude, the food was cold and I personally could not eat it.
I maybe a bit of a food snob but I am 100% sure that the Turkey dish served up two days later was the remains reused that most people left. This was an experience.
If you do stay at this hotel take earplugs, they play music in the dinning room and its so loud and pretty bad, so sit near the buffet end of the dinning room and get there early before all the good stuff goes. Anyway enough said on the food.
The rooms are OK, pretty big but all have twin beds no doubles, if you have a triple room be prepared for someone to sleep on a broken camp bed.
Our bathroom was nice but anything that breaks has not been fixed over time, so shower curtains missing and our bed was broken.
If you need a snack the food in the hotel shop is at least half price, the shop in the town is even cheaper.
When I asked to see a breakdown of out bill on the last day I was shouted at, I felt so disrespected by the staff the whole trip. They don’t understand the words Customer Service; they are just looking the whole time to see what they can get you to spend.
In regards to the skiing, I have skied before so booked an intermediate lesson. These don’t exist so don’t pay for them, they resort is 100% focused on beginners and they group people in sets of about 20 and go through the basics.
If you are not a beginner don’t go here. I loved the skiing, even though it was icy and the slopes were not maintained (stones everywhere), the lifts breakdown all the time and I ditched my lesson halfway through as there is not instruction just a guide to follow.
If there are any probs with lessons no one cares or helps you, Balkan holidays never helped with any questions or problems and just blamed things on the snow conditions. The slopes are tiny and as more people come each year there is not enough to cope with the people that want to ski.
I know people that have been to other ski resort in Bulgaria and they say this is the worst. In my opinion it was OK but I would not go back, as from skiing in France and Italy I know how things should be done.
To make the best use of the hotel you have to be on a schedule. Get up early as the food is better and you will def get one of the ski buses, the rest of the time you run the risk of it being too crowded and it not stopping, then you have to get a taxi.
Cold water runs out by about 5, so get straight in the bath when you get back.
Avoid this hotel and anything through Balkan holidays.

Submitted By: tony/richThe staff were very organised regarding the ski passes and buses.
The hotel was very good it had quite a few different bars inc Irish bar, which serves bar food, a bowling ally which can be quite expensive for Bulgaria. The swimming pool is quite small and quaint and not very warm. It has a very nice restaurant up on the 1st floor ala cart. Which comes at an extra cost, but well worth treating your self as your be the only one in there.
The white hart does an excellent breakfast, the staff were friendly.
Skiing was fabulous and there was plenty of snow, the little shacks were really great on the way down the mountain. And we found all the staff were really good.
The only bug bare was the bell sellers all waiting for you when you go down to the slopes buy your bells of ludvic (Chicago bulls)
However this is Bulgaria and still stuck in its communistic times so the standard of customer service may not be what you expect, don’t moan too much enjoy yourself you will have a great time

Submitted By: Mrs A J RobinsonWe can recommend the Turkish baths within the hotel, being beaten with pillows of bubbles was great fun, even for our children. But do take swimming caps with you for the pool as purchasing them was expensive. The water was on the cool side but ok.
Our group ranged from very beginners to experienced skiers and we all took the ski package with tuition. All of us improved our technique and had great fun within our groups and with the instructors.
The snow was good, the lifts were easy and the skiing excellent. We have just booked to go back again in 2007.

Submitted By: B CreminIf I was to give anyone planning a Journey to Pamporovo a bit of advice it would be not to waste your money by staying in Hotel Pamporovo. The attitude of the staff there is a disgrace to the rest of the resort. I am staying at the Perlick Hotel this year as it is more central and over €250 cheaper. The €250 would probably cover eating out for two for the week and save you a slot of stress.
Don’t expect great service in the White Hart either. The Apre Ski bar has good live music every night of the week and the staff are friendly. Dacks bar is a bit grubby but there is a great atmosphere there and the staff are nice there too.

Submitted By: Mr DH HealyMany bars to choose from in the hotel, including a bowling bar and a nightclub. Both of which have a lot of atmosphere. Swimming pool looks lovely but is freezing cold, shame that Jacuzzi and Sauna's cost extra (considering it is supposed to be 4/5 star).
Also DO NOT change currency in the hotel, they take an extortionate rate of commission. Go to HOTEL MURGAVETTES (opposite the Alaska supermarket) where there is a cash point in the lobby which is free of charge (to Barclays customers) Contrary to what I was told, US dollars are NOT as excepted currency in Pamporovo so stick with Levees.
We had power cuts throughout our stay, but on our second day the power was out for the entire day, which also meant the pistes were closed (due to the chairlifts not working).
The area in which we felt that the hotel was lacking was service, the staff (especially in the dining room) were nothing short of rude! Huffing and puffing at every request we made. It seemed the only time they responded with manners was when the word 'Tip' was mentioned.
This was something we found throughout the resort, in 'The White Hart' in the centre of the town the waiter actually THREW a menu at us after we asked for one.
Poor organisation also was a big problem, with the shuttle busses just turning up whenever they wanted, and sometime just driving straight past our hotel. In fact after our Bum-Boarding excursion our bus actually crashed into a snow drift, meaning we all had to get out and push. The reps were never where they said they would be and the time they said, meaning a lot of waiting around for only the smallest of inquiries.
This all seems a bit damning but we did have a great holiday, and would return but probably not too this hotel. I think Pamporovo has got a lot of work to do before I can reach the standards of other European Ski-resorts. Cheap and cheerful I think is the phrase.

Submitted By: Miss SL PenningtonThe only downfall of the whole holiday was the service received at this hotel, it was advertised as a five star hotel only to find that it should actually be a 3 star we paid alot of money for a twin room only to receive an extended family room with a sofa bed. The food was disgusting so we decided not to put ourselves through the torture and found other places to eat outside of the hotel i.e. on the slopes at the Hunter's cabin, the Lodge and the BBQ in Mugavetes good job really otherwise I think we would have had to live on oranges! The service from the members of staff at this hotel was appalling especially one of the receptionist and the manager couldn’t even manage a smile or good morning or good afternoon how the hell do they manage to run a hotel.
There were alot of people with the same problems as us, nearly everyone we spoke to had the same opinion of this hotel - nice on the outside terrible on the inside.
I really think the management need to concentrate on their customer service rather then just trying to create an hotel with great decor otherwise they will loose alot of holiday business.
I will definitely be going back to ski but not to this hotel.

Submitted By: Mrs E LockwoodHowever, the hotel and its staff really made me think twice about coming back to this country. On arrival we thought we had booked a romantic, ideally hotel but this was not to be the case. The staff were very rude and not that helpful. The food was pretty good and alot better than we had expected. We did view alot of bodyguards and ladies of the night walking around the hotel, which when you have young, impressionable children, is not good. Unfortunately what let it down was the lack of helpfulness and pure ignorance of people, especially when my son had an accident, which resulted in him having to have 10 stitches.
I think what you need to remember when visiting this country is it is not yet in the EU and I am not sure if it will ever get there or if it does it has a lot of hard work too do beforehand.
We did encounter power cuts, water leaking through the ceilings and a great deal in the lack of communication between the hotel and our tour guide. This included the hotel losing a British hotel guests passport! I too was handed back our passports as well as those of two Irish guests!!
Just remember to go with a very open mind and not to expect too much.

Submitted By: Miss A BartholomewThe accommodation was comfortable. The best advice I can give is- remember, this is a 4* hotel in Bulgaria, not Spain or Portugal so don’t expect it to be! The hotel itself including lobby were very nice and cosy with a beautiful fire in the main reception.
The food, as warned, was very basic but it's not that difficult to stand for a few days. Eating out was extremely cheap and the food was lovely! There are at least 6 restaurants nearby to choose from and if you don’t fancy a walk- taxis are cheap enough- just make sure you ask for a price before you get in the taxi!
The skiing was brilliant for beginners and intermediate. There are lots of places to eat and drink when you go up the mountain and again, it's inexpensive. Skiing for advanced would probably be good for a week but, they may get bored if it's for any longer. The Inghams instructors were great!
Overall review: great resort, restaurants great, hotel comfortable. A great holiday overall for a group of people! <br>

Submitted By: Miss M RodgersOnly downside was the hotel food - I would recommend trying the Italian restaurant, which is located opposite the Swimming pool in the hotel. The food there was much better and really well priced (even the wine!)

The staff were unhelpful and from the word go, treated you like you were a burden to them instead of helping.
They are slow but rush you when they have "more important guests", at which point they take about half an hour to get your drinks, give you a bill after a minute then come back, while you have taken two bites of food and they ask you to pay!!
The meals themselves are terrible (the chicken is still pink and uncooked, the salads are swimming in vinegar...nothing tastes as it should!)...put it this way, if you were treated like that in the UK you would complain to the manager or walk out!
Apart from that and a few other wee problems, it is a clean enough hotel, comfortable enough to sleep in and stay at, good access to the centre of the town for shops etc and is only a 10 minute bus journey to the slopes!
Oh and the swimming pool is quite good!
