Loved Kranska Gora and the Hotel Larix
from Larix
We had a lovely 7 day holiday in Kranska Gora. Glorious weather every day. We were worried about the hotel having read some reviews, especially about the food and went prepared to eat out often! However, it was a lovely hotel, worth paying the extra for a mountain view, the staff were extremely polite and helpful. Great swimming pool facilities, and the food was alright. We ate in the hotel every evening. We talked to people who had been to the hotel before and they said that the food had improved considerably. So providing the hotel keep it up, then I would have nothing to complain of. The only comment I would make is that the lighting in the dining room could have been a bit softer. All in all, we intend going back to Kranska Gora and if we do then we will go back to the Larix, possibly this year. Nothing is perfect and any imperfections were made up by the friendliness and helpfulness of the Slovenian people we met.
Take no notice of negatives!!
from Patek
I am one of the most fussiest of travellers and was very disturbed to read the negative reviews by other visitors. However, our stay at the Larix was superb and Slovenia as a whole was marvellous. The views from the hotel are amazing and guests very quiet indeed. The food is not haute cuisine but it's not bad either. Construction work was sufficiently far away not to be a problem and there were no "rowdy" bars at all. The staff were excellent and the facilities very good indeed. So go and enjoy yourself and don't listen to the whinging minority who obviously have no taste whatsoever.
Good hotel but shame about the noise!
from Traveller,Essex
Having read a number of reviews about the Larix, I was wondering what to expect, however the hotel was not as bad as some made it out to be. Rooms ok, food edible but rather monotonous after 2 weeks, but if you select one type of meat from the buffet dinner per day, it's not so bad as you get a chance to have a bit of variation. The biggest problem we had was the noise from the bar over the road which opens from 7am - 3am. Our room was on the front of the hotel and on the right hand wing. I have never known a mountain resort to be so noisy at night. It was more like being in lager lout territory. It got so bad that even with the windows shut at night, we complained to reception and they called the police out to get the bar to turn the music down. It seems that HiT now own all of Kransjka Gora and as such are catering to clients who want music blaring all around the village. I would go back to the resort, but would stay in one of the small privately owned hotels on the edge of the town, well away from the centre.
Ignore the moaners
from Cymrobach
Wife, daughter and myself have just returned from a 10 day stay at the Larix. Had a wonderful holiday - would have even better had we had 10 days of good weather but 7 days out of 10 isn't too bad. The Larix is a very nice hotel - the decor and facilities are in excellent condition and the swimming pool superb. We liked the bar/lounge in particular. The bedrooms (go for those with a balcony and mountain view - it's worth the extra) are very nice indeed with good facilities e.g. satellite TV, safe, plenty of room for keeping clothes etc. The staff were very polite and helpful and most spoke reasonable English. There is some building work in progress some 70 yds away - the builders do begin work at 7.00 a.m. and I suppose the banging may disturb those who like a quiet lie in - it hardly bothered us, however. The food seems to be the major debating point. The restaurant is of a self-service type. We found that the breakfast menu was quite extensive with plenty of choice, continental and hot. The fried food option may not please those who like the traditional full English - the sausages, bacon etc tend to be Slovenian in nature (as one would expect) but there is a good choice of cereals, juices, cold meats, cheeses, breads, jams, pastries, fruit, yoghurt, pancakes etc The coffee machines produce excellent coffee and hot chocolate. Various teas are also available - 4 out of 5 for the breakfast. Evening meals were fair to good - soups were ok but of a packet variety. There is always plenty of salad material available. The hot main-meal options were ok - meats are good, veg ok -perfectly edible and filling. Desserts were rather disappointing - rather a monotonous variety of small cakes but ice cream plentiful and plenty of fresh fruit. 3.5 out of 5 for the evening meals. The food compared quite favourably with what we've had on various other lakes and mountains holidays. We would certainly go back to the Larix and would happily recommend it.
Enjoyed our holiday at Larix
from emmanicolaliam
As our room was at the front of the hotel and away from building noise perhaps we have a different view of our holiday .We had a fantastic holiday and would definately recommend the accomodation and location .We found the staff to be very friendly and the food was sometimes repetative but was well presented and well cooked on the whole .The pool is on the ground floor and has an outside sun area which has fantastic views . Admittedly there is some building work going on but it has to be done at sometime and is a litlle way from the hotel anyway .We will definately be returning and wouldn t hesitate in recommending it to friends or family .
Nice Hotel, shame about the Food!
from FalkirkBairn
We have just returned from The Larix. The hotel overall is good, great location, clean fresh rooms with new bathrooms, views you would die for and a great swimming pool. The staff were helpful and friendly. However ...the food lets the hotel down, breakfast was acceptable if repetative - a good selection of breads, meats, cheeses ans so on with hot selections including pancakes, bacon, eggs and continental sausages. The evening meal was the same each night (with minor variations) meat, chicken and fish with overcooked veg. An overcooked tasteless pasta dish was also on offer most evenings. All food was pre-cooked and kept warm over the 2 hour serving period. After two nights and a look at the third evenings offereings we ate out! We found a great pizza place at the bottom of the main street - two 12" pizzas made to order with two large beers and a bottle of water with a salad for around 4500 tolars (£12-13).
Bad food and building works nearly spoilt holiday
from Stephen_A_C
I was surprised to see that as well as the most stunning views from my room in the Larix that I was right on top of a building site, my travel company had known of this for some time but hadn't bothered to inform me. Work started each day sometime around 7am and continued until 7pm. One day it carried later and the noise level in the dining room was unbelievable. I was informed that it would be going on until 9pm, but so many people complained that they were forced to stop. While on the subject of the dining room the evening meals were appalling. I wouldn't expect food of that standard in a 2 star hotel let alone a 4 star one. Having said that I found the staff (with one or two exceptions) to be very friendly and helpful and the location great.
Dreadful Food
from fuschialad
We have just returned from our 4th visit to the Larix and deeply regret that the standard of food in the restaurant has fallen dreadfully since last year. The food in the evenings, which used to be perfectly okay has plunged the depths following a change in ownership of the hotel to the HIT group - who appear to be taking over everything in the resort. The plates were cold, the selection of hot food hardly varied- they just changed the order on the menu- the food was overcooked, dry as old boots and the vegetables (what little there were) undescribably bad. It is such a shame as the rest of the hotel is beautiful which is why we kept returning but after the experiences of the last two weeks a 5th visit will not be on our agenda.
Building work ruined stay
from johnnyinhiscar
The rooms at this large, central hotel are OK but the problem was I had was that there were major building works going on at the back (mountain facing) part of the hotel. Yet even though these works are part of the hotel, construction staff were allowed to start at 7am. So I was awoken to loud banging and revving diggers and opened the doors on to my balcony to find a couple of swarthy-looking imported labourers standing on a lower roof just a few feet away! Added to that, the dining room is a horrid throwback to about 1976. The pool is great but it's also open to non-residents (at a fee) if you don't want to stay here. Also, there was an occasional but loud banging noise coming from the basement all night that turned out to be maintenance staff? banging doors. It's also way over-priced. The hotel may be OK when the building works are finished, but the fact that they are keeping it fully open while this is going on uncontrolled is unforgivable.
hotel larix: good location but pricey
from tonycroxley
Plus points: great location by slopes and nice views up the mountain; excellent swimming pool and spa - the kids couldnt get enough of the pool. Rooms fine (but of 3 not 4 star (as rated) quality) - but better than rooms in the kompas we have stayed at. Good bar/coffee shop. The evening buffet (on half board) in the hotel restaurant was just adequate but dont expect anything special- go to the pizzeria at the kotnik for something much better!. On the downside it is pretty expensive. As a family of 5 were were paying 250 euros a night half board for two interconnecting rooms. i would probably only stay here again if i got a good deal on a package hol. basis. However it gets my vote over the kompas which we have also stayed at.

it is a good hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. we have been back there a couple of times now , however the food is quite basic. Breakfast is probably the best meal. there is a great coffee bar and pool. this year when we go back we are only doing bed and... more
