Went to this hotel half term February '06. When we first drove up it looked pretty bleak and looked more like a concentration camp, but when we stepped inside we were pleasantly surprised. Good things - The staff are friendly and helpful and speak good English. The... more

Very Impressed
We originally booked to stay at the Larix but our tour operator recommended moving us ( at no extra charge to ourselves ) as the restaurant was being closed for updating for 3 days. We found the Kompas very comfortable, rooms were of high standard ( albeit no tea, coffee making facilities - but a well stocked fridge), some lovely additions like dressing gowns and slippers ( found the dressing gowns useful for taking down to the swimming pool), food was plenty and great choice and buffet style, staff extremely helpful and polite. Facilities included a lovely free small swimming pool and great jacuzzi with patio doors opening out onto paved area with sunbeds, umbrellas etc. We paid 11 euros for two persons which gave us an hour in the sauna area - we had sole use and was so worth it. Two saunas, a turkish steam room , plunge pool and relaxation area, soft music so therapeutic. As a hotel guest we had free entry to the Larix swimming pool complex, free use of the local new Vitranc Gym, 10% discount all over town for bike hire and 10% discount if purchased from reception for the summer Toboggan ride ( 5.4 euros each one way). Crazy but so exhilarating. Great for all ages as you can go as fast or as slow as you wish, you have the controls. Some great bars for an evening out. A lot cheaper than drinking in the hotel. We loved the bar opposite the Larix - a large red wine and a large beer less than 2 euros. It is so cheap even the Italians come over the border for a night out and to fill up their cars with the cheap petrol. Watch out for excursions paid for in resort. I recommend pre-booking as a lot cheaper. We found we had to pay an additional 10 euros each for the Venice trip for a boat taxi to take us into the main area and it was a very long day. (7am to 10pm.) The scenery in resort was amazing and very peaceful, not ideally suitable for very young children, we are in our 40's with older children ( who we left behind) and had a truly lovely time. Hope this review helps?
Kranjska Gora and the Hotrel Kompass
My family and I have just spent a week skiing in Kranjska Gora, during which time we stayed at the Hotel Kompass. This was our third skiing visit to the resort, having stayed at the Hotel Larix and Hotel Alpina the previous years. Upon arrival we were checked in, given a quick overview of the hotel and in our rooms (x3) on the 2nd floor within 10 minutes. The room consisted of an entrance hall, with two wardrobes, safe, hooks for ski jackets etc. Off the hall was a good size bathroom, well furnished with a shower (no bath), hair dryer, plenty of towels (used replaced each day). The sleeping area had two single beds, table & chairs, drawers, built in fridge & bedside cabinets. The TV had some 50 odd channels, with at least half a dozen in English. A door led on to a balcony, from which we had views of the ski slopes and mountains. The room cleaned daily to a high standard. One nice touch was the bathrobes. We had booked half board. Both for breakfast and dinner it was a buffet style. The breakfast was pretty similar each day, with the usual suspects, pancakes, eggs, bacon, cold meats, cereal etc. etc. The evening meal consisted of starters (salad, soup etc.) main course, usually 3/4 meats and fish, vegetables, pasta, rice. There was always a good selection of well cooked tasty food. The deserts were limited to cakes, ice cream & fruit. Although a big restaurant, we never seemed to be waiting to long in the queue for food. As we usually ate early we did not experience the selection being reduce a time pasted, which sometimes happens at buffet style meals. The staff were always quick to clear unwanted plates or serves drinks if required. The bar area outside the restaurant was comfortable and the staff always quick to serve you. The Kompass provided the best all-round experience of the three hotels, but we would have had no problems staying in either of the other two if the Kompass had not been available. Our first trek outside the hotel was to collect equipment, probably 5-7 minute walk. The process was painless and staff were very accommodating, making sure you got the right gear. This could also be said for the Ski instructors, (three of our group had 2 hour lessons for six days) who made the lessons fun, but pushed each of the group to achieve a higher standard. For those not familiar with Kranjska Gora the majority of the ski lifts leave from one area, behind the Hotel Larix. So anyone staying there has about 30 yards to walk. The Hotel Kompass is further, its 50 yards from the font door, to the road, and then 30 yards from the other side of the road to the lifts. A real trek :) Probably the hardest part is walking up the stairs from the ski room, with ski boots on and carrying skis. A large majority of the slopes are geared to learners, but if you venture away from these to the right the runs get progressively harder, until you get to the ‘World Cup’ slopes (Podkeron 1). For the learner & intermediate skier there is enough of a challenge. The advanced skier may not have enough to keep them occupied. The other side of the World Cup slopes are some more easy runs (Podkeron 2), but they are difficult to access unless you want to take on the difficult black and reds runs, going and coming back. One option is a taxi (10 eur each way). It was well worth it as the slopes are long wide and not crowded, ideal for the learner and intermediate. Lastly on the skiing front was the night ski. Two runs were open most evening, an easy blue and a red. The red, under flood lights, was much more difficult than during the day. Great fun and more challenging. On a general note about the slopes, the runs were always groomed each night for the next day, snow cannons were used when necessary to top up the snow and the lifts although busy moved along quickly. I can’t really comment about much else, as our holiday was focussed on skiing, which started at 9am, finished at 3ish, also we had an hour or so at night. Any non skiing time was spent in the hotel bar, a bar at the foot of the slopes or our room. One activity we did try was ‘skidos’, these jet skis for snow. Following a guide you drive through the woods and pastures of non skiing areas. The travel up to 50-60 kph, and the terrain is bumpy. We did it at night, which add a new dimension to the experience. Great fun, something I would recommend and do again. In summary Kranjska Gora is a good resort for the learner and intermediate skier. The Hotel Kompass facilities are good and standards high. The local people hospitable & friendly and most important of all the skiing was fun.
A good hotel but Hotel Larix looked better
As a party of nine we experienced a range of standards. Our bathroom was covered in black mould and we had to get another room for my boys because of the smell of sewage in their room. So our first impression was not good. But the staff were pleasant and helpful. The food (half board) was excellent. The pool was ok but could get over crowded. The Hotel Larix pool complex was on free offer and much better. Slovenian wine was very nice but the Gin tastes like moonshine. Good skiing for beginners with some red runs for progression. We even did the world championship run on the last day. The resort could use a ski bus to sample all the ski runs between resorts. Thank goodness it eventually snowed as we went to Austria on the second day to find better conditions at a higher resort. It took 2 hours each way and cost an arm and a leg. Now transformed into a winter wonderland the change is remarkable. The night skiing was a beautiful sight and fun if you had the energy. Main lesson? Don't buy 6 day ski passes from travel agents who won't refund them. Get them on arrival once you have checked out the real conditions.
Lovely little place.
Stayed at the Kompas hotel week beginning Jan 6th 07.Hotel is lovely and clean.Breakfast was fine-lots of choice, dinner was ok too.Buffet style for both meals.Plenty of choice.Good wholesome food.Swimming pool free, and sauna, steam rooms ,whirlpool,a treat. These were payable as extras.Generally good value for money.Fantastic view of the slopes and skiers from the bedroom window. The hotel has a nightclub downstairs, noise cannot be heard upstairs,it also has a large kids club upstairs. All in all avery picturesque little place. Would be nice to go back and explore in the spring/summer.Only a five slopes open this year(artificial snow) due to lack of natural snow but ok if you are learning or consolidating skills after learning.Plenty of trips provided (eg Venice and the caves etc)if you dont want to ski although they are a bit expensive.. Would still like to go back when there is more snow and more slopes are open. The food at the restaurants at the bottom of the slopes is also tasty and reasonably priced.
Great prices and great service - ideal for a family vacation
Free entrance to the swimmingpool and jacuzzi, makes this place worth the visit. And it is cheap! They have great offers on packages with liftcard, breakfast, dinner, stay in the hotel - and free entrance to their relaxation area. There's a relaxed atmosphere, and Kompas meets your expectations to a four-star hotel. Rooms are spacious and cleaning is excellent. The food becomes a bit boring after a couple of days, but theres plenty of it.
nice hotel close to the slopes !!
Stayed in Hotel kompass for a weeks skiing in December. Room was nice reasonably spacious and warm. The swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna & steam room facilities were all clean and lovely after a day out on the slopes. The food was to be honest average with the evening buffet getting a bit repetitive after a day or so (no ala carte option). I stayed half board, when i return i'll go breakfast only and eat out in the local resteraunts. If you are skiing the walk from the ski locker room to the bottom of the lifts is only about 150m which is great!!! The shopping/pub area of the town is also just 5 minutes walk away. Overall apart from the buffet an excellent hotel.
Honeymoon at the Kompas
We chose to stay at the Kompas for our 'Lakes & Mountains' honeymoon and definitely made the right choice! The hotel was warm and comfortable with a superb, spacious room. The staff were so friendly and most accommodating. We made good use of the pool, sauna and tennis courts, and even used the cycle hire to ride into Italy (it's so close!). I agree that the choice at the buffet wasn't great and did become rather monotonous. Next time we will take the buffet breakfast and eat dinner in the superb restaurants within Kranjska Gora. The bar was very nice to relax in at the end of the day. The nightlife wasn't brilliant though. However, highly recommended!
perfectly adequate
Our first experience of Slovenian hotels (have since been back to the country several times having fallen in love with the place). Throw back to Communist past - decor could deal with updating and freshening up. However, it was perfectly adequate 3 star accommodation and the swimming pool facilities are very good indeed. We only ate breakfast in the hotel, which was fine. Family room (for 5) was rather cramped and dark but for one night was fine. Staff were welcoming enough. Would have no problem staying there again, although on our next trip we have booked to stay in the Larix.
loved it
we had never done a lakes &mountain type holiday before. This hotel was very good.food was made from proper ingredients (not microwave and fryer). Everything was really clean and the staff were friendly. The pool and jacuzzi were nice to relax in after a day walking. On our last day as we had a early flight there was even a bag with a breakfast in to eat at the airport.I would recomend sloveinia, the hotel, and the area to anyone who loves nature walking and peace and quiet. Entertainment not good out of season might be better at a busy time
Decent hotel close to the slopes
We stayed in the Feb 2005 half-term. This is not a bad hotel. It is warm and comfortable, and very close to the slopes. Service is good, and there is a decent swimming pool and sauna. Our main complaint was the food, which is pretty poor, and lacks variety. After day 1 we decided to swap our inclusive dinner for the lunch, and just use it as a refueling base before we returned to the slopes in the afternoon. In the evening we sampled local restaurants, which were much more appealing.
