This hotel is in a most beautiful spot at the end of an alpine lake. This is a fantastic spot for a walking holiday.
We were rather disappointed in the Hotel Zlatorog. Our room was distinctly "tired" - the curtains were falling apart and the general decor was in a bad way. The shower was excellent.
We found the buffet style food of medium quality and, in particular, the salads were identical every night. The service in the restaurant area was limited and, surprisingly, it was actually difficult to get wine with the meal as the staff seemed to be too busy to offer. There was no choice of wine - only red or white.
The bar area was also limited with a poor variety of aperitifs etc and limited seating indoors (the evenings were quite cool during our stay).

This was my first visit to Slovenia and so didn't really know what to expect. However, the week was really great. The Hotel Zlatorog was extremely clean and the food (which was buffet-style) was fantastic! A wide and varied menu each day for breakfast & dinner.
The only disappointment was that we were in the annex and as the weather was incredibly hot and the annex has no air conditioning, it was like sleeping in a sauna. Also, there is no lift in the annex and no-one to help us carry cases up four flights of stairs.
However, generally the week was a pleasure. The area has so much to offer, with beautiful walks and fantastic scenery. Getting around was quite easy by public transport and the swimming in lake Bohinj is a wonderful experience. The only downside to this was the huge amount of tents & caravans round parts of the lake nearest Hotel Zlatorog.
We would definitely go back to Bohinj and stay at the Zlatorog, although would try to get a room in the main hotel.

I have to disagree with the spirit, if not the letter of some reviews I've seen of this hotel. It is slightly frayed around the edges, and the chef won't be getting his Michelin star anytime soon, but that is the fundamental appeal of a place like this.
The hotel, like the resort, and indeed the country, is still developing, improving, and not yet inundated with hordes of tourists, all paying over-the-odds for the dubious charms of a chic, boutique hotel experience.
If you have any complaints about this hotel, take a long look out of the bedroom window and remember why you came to this most beautiful part of the world, and then compare the room rate with that of neighbouring Austria or Italy.
