island hoppers
Just returned from a 3 night stay. Very impressive looking hotel from the outside, however very disappointed on entering. Arrived around 1.30 pm but had to wait (reception would not give keys out until 3 pm). there appeared no place to get a tea or coffee, the bar was closed, just various other guests sitting around awaiting the 'key hour of 3 pm'. The room, having paid a supplement for sea view was very, very basic and extremely 'tired' and appeared to have had no attention in years with the exception of a coat of paint on the walls,... more
Ended up with Gastro-Enteritis (Norovirus)
I write not just about the Glenburn Hotel, as my stay there was part of a 5-day coach and hotel break I and a friend took with Shearings. I wouldn't have given the break only 1* had I not ended up being very ill. I found the food at the Glenburn good and plentiful and the waiters were smashing. They were mainly Eastern Europeans and it was great to see them making such a good job of work local people didn't want. The room was OK. It was overheated for my tastes, but it suited my friend to have a warm room. There was still some... more
Lovely mini break
Although we arrived early at the hotel we were allowed to use our room immediately. The decor was a bit dated but the room was clean. Plenty of tea and coffee which was a relief .Menus in the restaurant had at least four choices one being vegetarian so all seem to be catered for.Our waiter was Paul aged about 18,he was really helpful and knowledgable about the island.Saw seals, gannets diving, porpoises and wild dear, all in the Ettrick Bay area.Great little bar in the square called the Taverna, good company, great conversation and the staff... more
Think Twice
My husband and I have just had the worst coach holiday to Shearings Glenburn Hotel. The room was clean but the bathroom was shabby. The meals in the resteraunt were not up to our standard. For example most veg frozen instant potatoes and at breakfast congealed eggs and toast done long before brought to table. Service poor to non existant. Reception unhelpful to complaints and passed back to all customers going to meals at same time. Only good thing about this holiday was Roy the coach driver who kept everybody entertained. This is a... more
great from start to finish
Booked through Shearings. Very impressive frontage, not so at the back. Cannot fault our stay there, a very professionally run place, good meals, bedroom very clean, the price was amazing.£116 each for three nights, including two coach trips! It would have cost me that (£116) to get there and back. The waiters were very quick considering the number of people there. Entertainment was excellent. My first time at a Shearings hotel, and with the price of fuel it won,t be my last.
great place to stay
stayed at this hotel dec 3rd for 5 days.on arrival pleasantly surprised. reception and all down stairs areas clean and cosy, also nice and warm.rooms were brill and spotless.restaurent was nice and bright with good staff who provided a very quick and efficient service. food was very good and breakfast was plentiful.after the 1st night the queue at the bar was much better(what do expect with free drinks provided) and sally and her troop provided entertainment of a high standard and kept the people happy all week.rooms were cleaned daily with... more
absolutely awful
This hotel was the worst hotel I have ever had the misfortune to stay in. It looks fantastic from the ferry, but walk through the door and the first thing we saw was a slot machine and there was an unpleasant smell also. There was a wedding on the island so we couldn't find anywhere else to stay so we went back to the hotel. We were given a room with a broken bed (one half was impossible to sleep on so my husband and I had half a nights sleep each as we swapped sides half way through the night). You are probably thinking "why did they... more
Oh dear. Not for us. Sorry
A web booking at short notice for 4 nights stay . Self Drive The Hotel was shrouded in Scaffolding and resembled a building site. Our sea view room, which carried a premium, wasnt a sea view but consisted of scaffolding boards, scaffolding and ladders. The room itself was shabby. My wife and I were really disappointed. On telling the receptionist she said WE should have contacted Shearings to ask if there were any problems. The deputy manageress said it WAS NOT Shearings policy to tell guests in advance about these issues.Had we... more

Just come back from a week at the Glenburn hotel Rothesay Isle of Bute. Delightful hotel superb views fom our room would certainly reccomend you book a sea view if available. Rooms were spacious, clean, and very comfotable. hotel staff very friendly nothing too much trouble for them ( although some of the guests were complaining) that always happens can't please everyone. Food was basic and portions small but that didn't bother us, again quite a few were complaining. We found a super pub The Black Bull in Town the food here was second to... more
loved the everything about the hotel
Stayed at the Glenburn for a weekend- it was great. Food was off good value and although it was not huge portions it was plenty and really served up hot on hot plates. The staff were very friendly and polite at all times. The rroms were clean and fresh towels everyday. The hotel was like a castle and the views were excellent. As expected at this time of year it was an older generation who was staying but it never stopped us having a great time - entertainment was good Friday and Saturday with the resident duo playing in Friday and a special... more
Look hard and you shall find!
We have just returned from a weekend coach trip to the Isle of Bute staying at the Glenburn Hotel. First impressions of the hotel are that of a grand nature and inside at reception it does not disappoint. We were checked in quickly and with little fuss and given directions to our rooms. Ours was on the 1st floor. It was a twin and of adequate size and it has to be said although the room was dated it was immaculately clean. The downside and a very big one was that the windows badly let in draugts to the point where the curtains swayed... more
