Rooms small but otherwise above average for a 3 star hotel
I recently stayed at Chancellor's Hotel for an academic conference. The Hotel is a bit out of the city, but fairly easily reached by a 10-15 minute bus or taxi, however as it was the conference venue it was the most convenient place for me to be. The hotel itself is quite nice, with beautiful grounds and well kept restaurant, bar and café areas. The hotel layout isn't very intuitive though and the signage leaves a bit to be desired. The bar area, for example, is tucked away such that people had to ask others to find it. A good thing... more
A well kept secret
To be enjoyed properly, an evening in Manchester needs a hotel for the night. When Manchester United play at home, all the medium priced hotels fill up quickly, so it looked like we were going for an early exit and the last train home. I checked every day for cancellations - but the only hotel available was The Grafton - and I'd rather spend a night in a cardboard box than stay there. I started widening my search - checking every web-site I could think of. But the home game at Old Trafford meant there was no room at any inn. Then... more
Great Location - Good hotel
Stayed for one night stopover from Scotland to Devon. Great location - about 5 minutes walk to the famous curry mile. The breakfast was reasonable, is served until 10:00am at weekends and checkout is 11:00am. Double room cost £59. Fairly small room and cramped bathroom but shower was very powerful. Nice and quiet at night considering how close it is to the student population. Some great pubs and a Tesco's is nearby if you need any snacks. Apart from the usual noise from guests slamming doors in the morning nothing else to... more
Excellent value for money, stunning grounds
I stayed at the hotel for 2 nights. The hotel is best described as a country house (although much extended since its conversion to a hotel) in the middle of a city (I assume it was a country house when it was built in 1850, its just Manchester has expanded around it in the intervening time). In my opinion the hotel represents great value for money. Certainly I think it was better than some hotels that you would pay an awful lot more for. Whilst furnishing in the room could be perhaps described as "minimalist" it was as good as (if... more
You need to pass the intelligence test to stay here!
There is a lack of commercialism about this hotel. Perhaps it's because it is part of the University that makes staying here something of an intelligence test. What other hotel has a web site that does not carry its telephone number? Or has directions that assume that you must be travelling from the south (perhaps aimed at Manchester United fans??!!) Or has signage for the hotel (I arrived from the north!!) that makes it more like a treasure hunt? Or has its room numbering in vertical pods rather than horizontal floors? Once... more
Good location,good value but basic
I have stayed here twice in 2007 on business which is only 10 minutes drive away. It is geared towards onsite conferences but the food is good and it is close to bars and restaurants. Some of the "standard double rooms" are really singles with a double bed which makes them very cramped. If you are on your own go for a single as there is more space. Wifi is available is the rooms and the breakfast is good.
Very strange hotel
Although the hotel is obviously well-run it has it's problems - it is very much geared towards the conferences it holds every day (maybe I should have guessed from the title - doh!) and has no concessions to atmosphere - very bland and characterless, and in the evening completely empty. Also it may be in a quiet area of Manchester, but the oh-so-safe fire doors go BANG!, so I woke up whenever my (very close) neighbour shut his door... So unless you're attending a conference there, maybe not.
Great value for money
This hotel is located in an amazingly quiet area of Manchester, within the grounds of the University of Manchester sports facilities, south of the city centre. I have stayed here at least 5 times for business and I return every time I have to be in Manchester. It is easy to get to the city centre by cab or bus. Some nice restaurants and pubs are within walking distance. It is not luxurious, but it is great value for money as generally hotels in the UK are very expensive. Wireless (paid) internet access in the room. Ample space to park your... more
Brilliant
Chancellors is a great place to stay when you visit Manchester. I have stayed there for three nights recently and it is not my first visit. Although the hotel is a distance from the city centre, it is completely accessible via well served bus routes. The hotel is set in it's own grounds and actually looks like the photograph in the brochure. My room was immaculate and comfortable, and I slept really well each night. The staff were friendly and the breakfast was superb.
