Best dining experience of the summer!
On entering the City Inn, my friend and I were slightly intimidated by the number of staff who were standing to attention and ready to greet us (obviously, being a new hotel, it was slightly overstaffed) but this meant that we didn't have to wait at all to be taken to the bar and provided with a drink and menus before entering into the restaurant. This meal was, by far, my best dining experience of the summer! The menu was a real treat, the food was served up quickly and beautifully and the waiting staff were more than happy to... more
Not for the faint-hearted!
made a late booking - room £80 not £255 (thank goodness!). in its favour the room was ok (like any chain, even much cheaper ones, but with a computer in the room), and the bathroom was well-designed. housekeeping was poor - room needed vacuum cleaning and the heavy mugs in the tea-making kit were coated in food debris. i encountered half a dozen staff - one was pleasant, friendly, the rest were supercilious or downright unhelpful - particularly the gate-keepers in the evening. the worst aspect of this hotel is the access.... more
Some of the best staff ever
Obviously issues regarding access at present (as others have said) but they have done much to make life as easy as possible under difficult circumstances. The customer care is excellent even chatting happily to a seven year old (who was talking about her birthday) as if she was the most important guest ever! Rooms great, food great, service great. Only regret is that we didn't travel by train as this would have been much easier.
Wonderful
This hotel opened 3 weeks ago but the professionalism of the staff was wonderful. OK there is a bit of an issue accessing the hotel at the moment but the hotel has done everything it can to help & even the security supervisor was friendly & helpful and made it more of an adventure than a problem to park your car (only £5). The room rates were reduced because the grounds outside are not quite finished. But once indide the hotel you are not even aware of this. We booked a club room which was spacious and so comfortable.. We both loved... more
Management response from David.Orr

Many thanks for your thoughtful comments.. As I write this response I am aware that when we opened our Westminster hotel in September 2003 Tripadvisor was really starting to become an important source of independent information as well as an important motivational force to demonstrate the power and importance of customer feedback on a truly global scale. I think that Tripadvisor has been a very positive platform for customers and it has also been helpful to us within our business. I really welcome the opportunity to interact with Tripadvisor and have over the years been a keen advocate of the importance of undiluted customer feedback, not all hoteliers feel quite the same.. As we opened our hotel, quietly, over the last three weeks in Leeds we knew that we had challenges with the incomplete areas of new Yorkstone and Granite paving outside the hotel. I knew that we would be offering a very low rate in the early weeks to reflect the fact that each day whilst we were geting closer to completing the external and some internal works there would be a level of inconvenience and the potential for some confusion over access, directions, window cleaning, and final commissioning as we wrestled with the need to get the operation up and running, introducing our new business and it special attributes to the City ofLeeds and its people and its visitors. I think it has been the right thing to do and it has been very important as you can imagine to all the talented people we have recruited that we made the commitment to get going, despite the challenges, but I do accept fully that it has compromised some aspects of the experience. We will do our best to recover your confidence. I think that the reviews are by and large fair and I take personal responsibility for the valid points made. But please believe me this is a fabulous hotel, but it is our newest baby albei growing up fast... If possible it is even more helpful to get feedback direct as well as on Tripadvisor as it speeds up our ability to respond, resolve and rectify. Our corporate culture is 100% customer commitment. Taking some of the points made I hope the following is of some help,,, Directions.. Leeds is one of the UK's most hallenging cities fordirectional legibility, the council and AA are being helpful but please download from our website fo the latest and best directions. Unfortunately satnav relates to the old use of the site as a ar park which is confusing. Also our website wrongly suggests our parking is open ,it is not yet (September the 14th latest) but we now offer much more convenient parking and I agree if you dont know Leeds it is difficult to find.. We will also look at sorting out an apprpriate deal for customers and make sure that is also on the website. The Cleaning points are all in hand, unfortunately the contractor had not been able to access some windows as the terraces were being worked on below. Rooms issues I am sorry about, but we have had early challenges that are now being supported by our Group Head Housekeeper who is exceptional. The lady in the lift has to be there to ensure we are fully "accessible" and legible to all customers. Our Fitness suite is now open and is just fantastic. The access from the station is having many millions spent on it by the City and in a few weeks will become a wonderful light and dramatic route(under cover from the rain, I tink they want to rename the street Light Neville Street). We will keep our staff in the Dark Arches(which are permanently lit) to escort customers, help with info directions etc as well as giving you all a 50% off exceptional City Cafe food offer. SkyLounge is now open on Sundays, that should have been the case since before last weekend so again our fault, but it is a truly special space. The main areas for works to be done relate to the external paving, every day there is significant progress and as the terraces take shape I think it is clear that the other buildings beside us are also exceptional and the public spaces at the canalside will be some of the best in the UK, not just Leeds. As all our paving and Al Fresco terrace works complete in the next two weeks, there will be further works around one of the buildings the rather astonishing "Candle" Tower building as they complete,, Watermans place which is a CZWG building will be finished and fully open from 14th September,,but we now have a much clearer access arrangement in place that hopefully customers will agree works far better as of now,,.. Leeds will have a truly exceptional hotel staffed with a super team with two stunning destination Bars, SkyLounge(which is so busy already you must please book your panoramic terrace table in the evening), Granary Lounge(its canalside terrace will I hope be open from Friday 21st August) City CAfe(similarly terrace open friday) as well as the City Inn standard rooms which as many of you know are well thought through compact but ergonomically user friendly and equipped with a wholly free to use Imac system that can for example give you skype video conferencing..Conference rooms with canalside and skyline views as well as private terraces for your parties.. .. It is painful to read the critiques but it is certainly helpful to make sure we resolve issues and also remind us that every day we can delight you or let you down ...and hopefully as you can see form the review of all of our hotels we do try really hard for it to be the former.. It is also really encouraging if reviewers do see through our efforts and certainly as each day passes we are making headway. We will put much more detailed information on our website to assist directions and progress.. But thank you all for taking the time no only to post your articles but to also read all this from me.. It was a bit long!! David David JM Orr Chief Executive and Co-Founder City Inn Ltd

Work in Progress....
Just experienced the new City Inn in Leeds. Its in a fairly good location but as previous reviewers have mentioned the entrance at the moment is very uninviting thru the dark arches and past the smelly canal. The hotel is fairly soulless and its disappointing that the Sky Lounge isn't open on Sundays and don't really understand why this should be the case. There is a very irritating automated female voice in the lifts which drives you mad and as usual, the housekeeping staff seem to have an inane ability to close doors rather than slam them... more
Will be nice when it and the surroundings are finished
Agree with the other posters: impossible to find / access by car or taxi. Currently in the middle of a building site, which means dust and noise and I bet the credit crunch will mean the area won't be fully developed and builder-free for a good while yet. You have to walk down the dirty and smelly dark arches, navigate a few construction sites and then you're there. Rooms are standard CityInn, Ours seemed a tad bigger than other doubles I've had but no bath, only a shower. The Mac TV and internet system is a nice touch but... more
Will be better when its finished!
We stayed at the hotel for 1 night on 15 August 2009. It had been open 3 weeks then There is still a lot of building work going on around the hotel and this is very unattractive. It is not easy to get to the hotel as there is no access for vehicles. It is not possible to get a cab to or from the hotel either at present. This is not good as it was raining when we stayed. The car park is not finished so you have to pay city centre rates to park. The girl who checked us in seemed nervous and a little confused. She didn't... more
Great rooftop bar, great hotel
Brand new city centre hotel (opened late July 2009). I stayed here for 1 night just less than 2 weeks after the hotel opened. Liked: Public bars/ spaces- modern Rooftop bar- best bar in Leeds! Setting- on the canalside Breakfast- quality Modern rooms if a little sparcely decorated Nice touches such as when we turned up at 2:45pm to check in, it was 15 minutes before the rooms became available so they gave a slip of paper allowing a free drink in the bar for each person in the group. Not bad! I hope the good... more
Would be nice if it was finished!
I stayed in this hotel with my mum for her 50th birthday as a treat. We drove to Manchester and as soon as we turned off the junction for Leeds we ran into problems. The hotel's sign post took you to a dead end street and the sat nav had no idea where the hotel was. After driving around the leeds loop for an hour and after asking 4 people, who had never heard of the hotel, we decided to go back and try the dead end street again. There was a large building in the process of being built so we asked one of the builders for some help. He quickly... more
Fantastic hotel for business or pleasure
Stayed for one night in this hotel for business. It was still not 100% finished but had only been open for 2 weeks! Aside from that, I have no complaints. Staff were very helpful, rooms were perfectly clean, and modern and contemporary. Breakfast was great - I didn't try the Full English, but judging by what I saw other people have, it looked really nice. Location isn't too bad if you want to walk around, I think when they finish the outside area it will be a lot easier to get to. Room service was very nice, and reasonably priced as it... more
