Outdated Decor - No Internet !
As a frequent visitor to Birmingham I always book the Crowne Plaza, I'd love to say that this is due to the wonderful experience, but Im afraid it's all to do with collecting Priority Club points ! You cant knock this hotel for location, views over Birmingham can be great and it's walkable from New Street. Food is good, rooms are of a good size and the mainly Chinese staff are very pleasant. Negative wise, this hotel doesnt seem to have moved on, decor and fittings are old, the heating / cooling would grace the early 80's and no... more
Pretty good
The decor wasn't what you would call modern, but the room was huge, with comfy beds, and nice and clean. As others have said the breakfasts are well worth getting. I'd include with the room price because you save a few pennies. The breakfast choice is vast and all very tasty. Make sure you ask for the cooked specials though - we went during the weekend and the menu wasn't out so we didn't know we could get cooked things like waffles until the monday when we left.
Good Stay
I have just returned from an excellent 2 night stay. The rooms were spacious, we had 4 in the room. The beds were comfortable and quiet. The hotel was clean. The requests we made from house keeping were handled promptly. The leisure facilities were small but adequate. Breakfast was excellent. Only downside was the staff while helpful, were not overly friendly, however this was not a problem. I would stay here again
Above average European Hotel
I am a physician, and I travel about once a month to medical conferences. I stay at various European hotels frequently each year, and I found this hotel to be better than most! I was surprised to read the unhappy experiences of the posters on this site. I found my room to be exceptionally large, with two queen size beds, a seating area and a large bathroom. It appeared to be similar in size to a North American hotel room, and nothing like the seemingly miniaturized 4-star hotel rooms I have suffered with in Italy and Sweden, in particular.... more
Faded and very poor value
It's sad that there are still so many corporate hospitality providers still praying on the whims of business guests who may be more reluctant than normal to complain when someone else, usually their employer or client, is picking up the bill. From my experience, this hotel epitomises these values. I paid £151 (that's nearly $300) for a single night, including parking my car in the dingy and poorly signposted underground car park. The room was on the 9th floor - allegedy non-smoking. Either my neighbours flouted this, or, more likely,... more
Would stay here again...
Overall, no complaints from my wife and I. Arrived from Heathrow on Sept 2nd (take the National Express Coach, its direct to Birmingham) and staying until Sept 6th. Front desk staff were very helpful. The breakfast serving was awesome...worth the booking in itself. Rooms are average size, clean and bedding good (North American standards). Bathrooms were good. Glad the room had air conditioning...early Sept, temps were 22 C but the rooms were quite stuffy and humid. Pool and gym facility was a very nice ammenity, excellent trainer... more
Looking shabby
Crowne Plaza is billed as the higher class version for the Holiday Inn chain. Indeed I have stayed in a number of Crowne Plaza hotels in the UK which are of a very VERY high standard. This hotel however is not one of them. It really really needs a refit. From the outside it looks tired but inside in the rooms it is worse. Over the last few weeks I have stayed a few times and on each stay I have noted mould in the bathrooms, cobwebs on the roof, rips in the carpets and so on. This is a shame as the location is great and... more
Ok for an overnight stay
The location of this hotel is very good being a 10 minute walk from the bullring and next door to the Mailbox. The downside is that it is way overdue an update. A lot of the rooms are looking sorry for themselves and cannot justify the room rates (you would get a cleaner, better presented room in a Travel Inn). Parking on-site is also very expensive. The staff were all friendly and helpful but there are much nicer hotels in the city for the money – look elsewhere.
Retro Birmingham style!!
Stayed for 1 night on a weekend break. Staff very friendly and helpful. Room a bit dated but very clean. Breakfast very good. Overall not too bad.
good location
I stay here often when I'm working in Birmingham as the location is great. Having stayed in most of the city hotels this one fairs slightly better than some of the others. The rooms are in need of a make over but generally are a good size, clean and have the expected amenities. The showers are pretty much hit or miss but I've been in worse! Rooms can get pretty cold during the winter and the heaters are quite noisy. The hotel staff are really friendly. The food is good, room service is fast. The pool and gym are handy but can get a little... more
