Could have been better
Booked in for 3 days to Derwent in Torquay. The bedroom was reasonable and entertainment was good. There are several entertainment areas throughout the hotel, so pleanty of choice. The food was very nice too. The leisure, pool and gym facilities only look good from a distance. The gym I found was small lacking sufficient equipment, I mean only 1 exercise bench with a people having to wait to use it. The Jacuzzi was old with bits of broken fiberglass around it. No notices or rules to exclude people for antisocial behavior, One crowd in the... more

Thank you for your review. I am sorry that some unacceptable language was used by other guests whilst you were using our leisure facilities. I have discussed this with the pool management team. We hope to be able to welcome you back on a future occasion. Kindest regards

"excellent all-round hotel. Five-star + stay at a two-star listed hotel"
What more can I say?- when reading the negative reviews about the Derwent I honestly thought they were talking about a completely different hotel. Yes-the balance had to be paid in full a time before the actual date- but if you read the terms and conditions in the brochure or online this is clearly stated. The facilities are all clearly signposted and a full itinerary is included in the welcome pack. The receptionists who were second to none can always tell you about anything that is going on-JUST ASK !!!!! . . For instance I asked... more

The Derwent
Ariived for a 2 day stay as part of an organised birthday party. The Derwent is one of four hotels all linked by walkways and with shared entertainment facilities. The room we had was pretty dark and a bit too warm to be comfortable but clean enough. First night`s dinner was alright but again the restaurant was too hot and very bright. That`s the not so good - the rest was just brilliant and hence four stars. The entertainment and facilties this place has is second to none. Every night there is a huge hub of activity going on even in... more
A free upgrade from the Derwent
I had booked the Derwent 2 star also part of the THL leisure resort but due to a gas leak in an ajoining hotel after the 1st night was upgraded to the Carlton which is a 3 star. The room I got was ok , not as big as the room Id left behind (bunk, double, single) for 5 people we had to make do with a double single and travel cot which involved me sharing double with 2 kids.. As was the only room available we took it. The bathroom was better than Derwent, but the shower head had black around the water spray holes. The access was much better... more
This is by far the worst holiday I have ever had
To cut to the chase, when I booked this holiday they 'forgot' to mention that it needed to by paid in full prior to arrival. We booked 4 rooms 3 being family suites. The family suites are as far away as possible from reception and this trek involves at least 10 stairs and 8 doors (approximately), although there is 3 lifts the stairs can not be avoided. For a mother with a baby under 1 this proved to be quite irritating. The rooms, however were a pleasant surprise. With bunk beds, single and double bed, 2 seater settee and travel cot... more

It is rare that a guest of TLH Leisure has to complain regarding the service provided by our teams. This said guest perception is paramount, and I accept that their perception of our customer service was poor. The reviewer has had a response from the owner of the company, prior to our knowledge of this review being posted. The response did take 4 working days as the reviewer had asked for a full investigation. After reviewing how we dealt with the gas leak from a building adjacent to us, it is my conclusion that we acted promptly and involved the Gas Emergency Agency inline with our protocol. The leak was from a neighbouring property, therefore out of our direct control, we are currently in discussions with it owners to avoid a recurrence. This said it is obviously distressing for anyone to encounter the smell of gas, especially guests with children. It is my understanding that these guests were offered an immediate move to one of our sister hotels, and then an upgrade to one of our 3* hotels for the two remaining days, and given a substantial discount for the inconvenience. A few points raised by the reviewer in correspondence with us regarding our customer service were relevant and have been addressed. It is my conclusion however that my team at the Derwent Hotel did everything possible to address the situation promptly and with a good degree of care. We continuously review customer feedback and continue to strive to offer the best customer service in our industry. We have been extremely successful in this area, I am truly sorry that this was not the reviewer’s impression. We have been trading as a family owned resort for over 50 years. This has only been possible because of the quality of service, and value we offer. I hope that anyone reading this review continues to read the vast majority of positive reviews posted by other guests. We are also listed as TLH Leisure Resort.

good standards with excellent facilities
I travelled with my wife and four teenage children. The children were placed next to us in two twin rooms. The rooms were clean and probably slightly better than the two stars suggest. We stayed half board which was excellent value for money. Food was great at times but dissapointing with a few items. The facilities at this hotel really made the stay worthwhile. There are four hotels joined together and residents can use any one of the hotel's facilities. Staff were very good. we kept one poor receptionist tied up for ages as she phoned... more
Run Down....
This was our third visit to the Derwent Hotel. Our stay was enjoyable but some standards have slipped. The bedrooms are very run down. Bed was broken, carpets dirty, tiles missing in the bathroom & sealant missing around the bath making the bathrrom smell damp. Money needs to be spent updating bedrooms, corridors & the reception area. The restaurant has been updated & looks so much better. The service was excellent, food was good (even though the profiteroles had gone off & the jug of milk had not been cleaned), it was good value.<br... more

The Derwent Hotel has a continuing bedroom investment programe that has seen 30 of the 175 bedrooms refurbished over the last 18 months. The vast majority of the balance of rooms have been refurbished within the last 5-10 yrs. This investment will continue this year and beyond. Although some of our older bedroom stock is quite dated, these rooms are clean and any faults would normally be resolved by our mantainance team. I appologise to the reviewer if this was not the case and will look to identify the room that was occupied. As a family owned and run resort customer satisfaction is one of our core values. We have invested over 1 million pounds in our 5* central facilities in recent years, as well as the full refurbishment of our 400 seat restuarant at the Derwent Hotel, which is one of 4 hotels on the complex. We hope that our guests see value in our extensive, well apointed resort that includes the free use of our Aztec swim complex and our nightly entertainment. We continue to take note of our guest comments and direct our capital investment into the areas that our guests want us to.

A very pleasant place to stay.
My wife and I have just spent a very nice few days at the Derwent Hotel. We travelled with Leons Coaches from Stafford, Harry the driver made the journey very pleasurable. We were met by the receptionist who came on board the coach with a welcome pack containing all we needed to know about the hotel. Our bags were taken up to the room without asking, a very nice touch. We had asked for a quiet room which was at the back of the hotel and managed to get a good nights sleep. No grumbles about the room it was cleaned every... more
Better than a 3* hotel can't believe its only 2*
The hotel was great, staff were friendly. Service in restaurant was excellent, menu clearly marked on items that were extra and those included in the price, they did a melt in your mouth banoffee pie which was delicious. My daughter who is quite a fussy eater really enjoyed the choices on the menu and the food. Drinks were cheap. Rooms clean . We used the swimming pool which was lovely, One large pool for swimming lengths and one smaller pool for lounging in. The ballroom was spacious and had a good dance floor. One complaint we... more
