The Refurbishments are great.
Just recently returned from a 4 day stay at the newly refurbished Nether Abbey with a group of 10 other Golfers who have been going to the hotel for 13 years. The hotel went under a refurbishment early this year, and the results are impressive. The new management are warm and friendly, the rooms have been done to a very high standard, and the bar/ restaraunt areas very clean, and furnished in a contemporary style. Ideally situated on the main road into North Berwick it is easy to find, and an ideal base for anyone wishing to use this... more
This is a superb hotel!!
I stayed at the Nether Abbey last week while golfing - It has obviously been refurbished since the last reviews. The hotel is very well presented: - everything exceedingly unsoiled, fantastically fashionable, and the contemporary styled bedrooms worthy of special mention. The food was an impressive standard and of great value, the bar and outside seating area splendid and the staff very helpful and very friendly. I use hotels every week, paying in London £260 - £300 a night for accommodation. The Nether Abbey is of a higher standard... more
Disappointed - and frozen
very disappointing after the encouraging website. Food at dinner was good but breakfast choice and service limited and disorganised. The main problem was the room - absolutely arctic. Not what you are looking for on a pre Christmas weekend break on a snowy December Friday ! Even worse was the bathroom. Nowhere to put anything down and the shower was a trickle. The worst bathroom I've ever been in in a hotel.
Never never again
Extremely disappointing- after seeing photos of cool contemporary looking rooms on the internet and reading on the website about how they had "recently refurbished our fourteen bedrooms" we booked a 2 night stay several months in advance. On arrival however the website is deceiving- the place looks tarted up downstairs in the bar, but climb the creaky stairs with threadbare carpet and we found our room was apparently one that hadn't undergone "recent refurbishment" (still happy to take our full £100 a night though). The room was postage... more
Better than expected
I have just returned from a four day golfing break spending three nights half board at this hotel as part of the package.I agree with other comments to a degree with regard to the accomodation, but the management are in the process of modernisation from the ground up. Meaning the bar and restaurant first which can only be described as excellent. The quality and value of food was superb and the choice and quality of the beers and lagers was excellent, the drinks are a touch expensive but on a four day break you can put up with it.Overall a... more
Overpriced -even with free crisp!
We stayed for our last night of a jaunt from Land's End to John O'Groats (by car!) at Nether Abbey. North Berwick itself exceeded our expectations and was a super little town but the hotel was a tad disappointing. It was far and away the most expensive accommodation of our road trip and we felt that it was overpriced for what we got. The service was quite pleasant and the food was very good, the room was a good size with a view towards the Firth of Forth and a comfy bed but there were niggling little things that just took the edge off our... more
glad to be back

It is tough to know where to start ....i havent seen blankets like that since i left the scouts ....i havent seen a television like that since i gave up squatting ....i havent seen a shower like that since we fixed our leaky pipes .... i havent seen room decor like that since i last visited my nan ......oh and an illegal immigrant raid wouldnt go amiss to check the staff out . i dont want this review to be too one sided, so on a positive note i saw no... more
Nightmare in NB.
Light fitting was hanging off the wall. No way to regulate room temperature. Bed sagged in middle. Musty smell in rooms. YUK!!!
Never Abbey
I would have almost rather have stayed in a barn. Not much difference, really. The hotel had the smell of manure (from the local agricultural fields or so I am told), the bed mattresses were flat, limited running water (had to lie down to wash off), and you couldn't regulate the temperature in the rooms. The only differences were that you actually had to pay money to stay at the "Never Abbey" and they had fresh flowers on the desk when you walked in. Nice touch, huh.
Never stay here again...
Terrible. Very cramped rooms. Beds like waffle irons. Heating was uncomfortably hot or too cold. Breakfast limited at best and staff unhelpful.
Management response from NetherAbbey

this review bears no relation to the type of Business we are now and occurred before a 4 year rennovation programme with an investment of 700k, culminating in the rennovation of all bedrooms in 2007 to a 4 star standard
