A Perfect Little Place to Stay in a Perfect Little City
from Frites
My wife and i just came back from a trip to England, Scotland and Paris. We used Trip Advisor to find all of the places to stay after a friend recommended it and that is how we came across the Ceilidh - Donia Hotel. To use the word Hotel is wrong, the Ceilidh - Donia is more of a bed and breakfast, being that breakfast is included in the room rate. The Hotel is located just about a mile out of the town center in Edinburgh, but that only makes it better. With bus service that takes you literally from the hotel's backyard to the...

A lovely atmosphere and would return!
from SW+GH
We stayed for 5 nights from the 20th of Aug to the 25th. Our room size was small but lots of draws and a good sized wardrobe to be able to unpack and stash the suitcases under the bed. Very homely feel to the hotel and our room. Most comfortable bed we had found in the UK. Very clean and new feeling. Awesome shower with power head. Drank in the bar most nights, breakfast in the hotel most mornings and one dinner. Food well prepared and presented and good value for money. Order breakfast the night before, hot cooked to your...

Personal, private, and (for the money) posh
from BrianTH
We've B&b'd a bit, and occasionaly found those three "P",s. Cooked to order huge breakfasts, (not using a microwave - other places we've stayed we got used to the slightly over-nuked bacon with the trademark black corner ). Real fresh mushrooms, not canned. Dinners with real flare. Owner hosts, with young Scots as staff, were available when we needed, and left us to our privacy when not. Located in a quiet area, easy bus access to the city center. Immaculate rooms, the bathroom sparkled. and roomy with a view for ours. And,...

Outstanding hospitality and dining coupled with ideal location
from Chardo23
We visited Edinburgh in August, which is the height of the festival season. The hotel Ceilidh-Dona offered the perfect location as it allowed us to leave our rental car on the street in front of the hotel while providing us with easy walking access (~25 minutes to the Royal Mile in the center of the city) and readily available bus access (~3 minute walk to the bus). Being in a picturesque and elegant neighborhood away from the bustle of downtown was idyllic. Our room was spacious, beautifully appointed and sunny. The hotel mixed old...

Good value, service 'a little edgy'
from mskono
This a good hotel with smallish rooms and a very highly rated restaurant which had very good food. The hotel is a good value. The only detraction from my view is the interaction with the manager. We arrived to a locked door, spent a good 5+ minutes trying to raise someone at about 5pm (even the taxi driver helped) and then were treated a bit rudely. Also, on the second night got some abrupt help finding another restaurant close by even though we'd dined at the in hotel restaurant the prior night. Be sure to indicate the quantity of...

Too expensive accommodation
from jayhawk76
The room was located on the third floor and the stairs were too narrow for us to easily carry our suitcases to the room. Although a fan was provided, it was not efficient and the room was uncomfortably hot. Thankfully the hired help was friendly and accommodating, the owner who we met was cold, distant and unfriendly. In fact I preferred to talk with the staff than the owner. The price per person was much higher than expected and over priced for what we received. We do not recommend this B & B and would not ever stay here again.
Great Hotel
from wjr
Great hotel in a nice quiet neighborhood. Great hospitality and friendly staff. Great meals, desserts and bar. Very clean and comfortable rooms. Nice strong shower. Great view of Arthur's Seat out of the front rooms. A short walk to the bus and a short ride (One way = 1 Pound, Whole Day = 2 Pound 30) to Edinburgh's Historic City Center, Princes Street, the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace or the bus/train station. And two extremely friendly Golden Retrievers, Celtic and Callie, to greet you after a long day of...

Great value for the money
from Tamara_Mc_8
Great location--an easy bus ride to the City Centre. Rooms are clean, bright and well maintained. Dinners in the restaurant were excellent. While in Edinburgh, we stayed at a four-star Castle for one night and, for the money, I would pick Ceilidh-Donia first everytime.
Good Value
from FarmerJane
Compared to similar hotels in Edinburgh this hotel is very affordable. Hotels are always more expensive in major cities so the price really can't be compared to the rest of Scotland. The power shower is amazing! Best shower of my life. Room is average size with great halogen lighting. Oddly there was only 1 mirror in the room above the pedestle sink. I wish there were a full-length dressing mirror. There are only 3 channels on TV, but the TV has a DVD player. They have a good selection of DVDs to borrow. It was nice to just relax...

Decent Hotel
from Travel159549
My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Ceilidh-Donia in early July 2006 and had an enjoyable experience (though we have no other Edinburgh hotel experience with which to benchmark). The hotel is older (as are many in Scotland), and with the age comes some of the minor items that can either be attributed as "character" or "nuisances". Our hotel room was clean, included a nice breakfast (already in the price), a "power" shower (no bath), and a small TV (with only 3 channels). There was plenty of free street parking for our car. All in all the...
