Exactly what we expected.
I took my family to Canterbury to show them an "old" England different from London. The Cathedral Gate fit in perfectly with the Cathedral and the old city. Yes, the floors slope and the doors are crooked - but that's the fun of it. Visitors looking for Holiday Inns abroad should go elsewhere. Visitors seeking a memorable experience and VERY friendly, informative staff should contact the Cathedral Gate.
Love it or hate it
You will not stay here and have neutral feelings. If you tend to like chain hotels, this is not your place. If you want something unique, you might give it a try. The back of the hotel looks onto Canterbury Cathedral. The room itself was nothing fancy to say the least, college dorm furnishings at best. We had to walk across the roof to get to our room as another reviewer mentioned, but it was also a nice view of the catherdral and what other hotel would have cats playing on the roof. The lady at the hotel was incredibly nice and even... more
Agree, No Value
The goods news; friendly staff, OK breakfast. The bad news; run down building, bathrooms falling a part, no shower, dirty entrance, furniture straight out of a trailer park, etc. All of this is not due to it being an old historic building but due to lack of basic maintenance. Location was good right next to the cathedral, but there are many more choices just a block away that are a better value and more interesting. From a bigger picture, one would have to ask why stay in Canterbury at all. 'A nice place to visit, but I wouldn't... more
Happy Memories
Fully agree with the latest comment on Cathedral Gate. We stayed some years ago with breakfast served in the room overlooking the Cathedral. No price could pay for that historic view sought by so many Pilgrims for 800 years. yes, there may be hotels with modern facilities, lavish rooms, extensive grounds, excellent cuisine but nothing matched a wonderful week-end we had. Those of you who are film buffs must buy the video of Canterbury Tales, made during the Second World War of an Amercan visiting the area. Interesting views of bombed... more
most unique hotel we've ever stayed
The Cathedral Gate Inn was very unique! Never have I had to cross over a roof to arrive at our room. The doors were slanty, the floors were uneven, yet our room was clean, nicely decorated and the view of the Cathedral at night was like staying in a fairy tale. The staff was superb! We have never had such helpful people. The dining room was enchanting and breakfast delightful. I expected to walk down the hallway and meet a ghost or "lady in waiting" We were there Nov. 22 to 24th, 2003 and loved it.
Good value, great atmosphere
I was hesitant to stay at the Cathedral Gate Hotel due to a negative review on this site. Fortunately, I decided to give it a try and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. My purpose for visiting was to scout the place for a choir tour I am leading, and I had no second thoughts about reserving rooms for the tour. If you want to stay in an historic building with fine staff and great location, I highly recommend the Cathedral Gate Hotel.
Had a good time at the Cathedral Gate Hotel
I've stayed at this bread and breakfast two times and found it to be an attractive old creaky building in the center of town. The bed in the Barn (each room is named) is lumpy, but the staff and the service is great. The room comes with a Continental breakfast, but for a few pounds more you can order an English breakfast which is as good as any other location in Canterbury. This hotel is close to all resturants, pubs, and is right next to the Cathedral. Overall it was a very good experience.
Cathedral Gate Hotel
Small Room Looking over the Buttermarket, the windows rattled all night ,and the bed it was like sleeping in a bed of hay it just saged and then sunk in.There is alot more in Canterbury than this place for the price.
Highly Recommended
Foudn this gem of a hotel by chance and highly recommend it. Just by the Cathedral gate the hotel is in an excellent position with a wonderful view of the cathedral and the buzz of the square outside. For being so central the prices are very reasonable and you could go even cheaper by sharing ammenities. If you want a five star hotel then this is not for you but if you want a piece of history, this has been a hotel since the 15th century, with sloping floors and low beams then this might just be for you. The rooms are clean and comfortable... more
No value here!
I have traveled the UK extensively over many years and have not been prompted to write a report on any hotel - until now. If you paid $135 a night for two twin beds in the US, or anywhere else for that matter, you may expect a certain level of comfort. Not at the Cathedral Gate Hotel in Canterbury, UK however. The historic value aside, there has been no effort to bring this establishment up to any acceptable accommodation at the price. The room (#12) had decrepit (not historic) furniture with drawer handles missing, in other words -... more
