Excellent Stay
Just stayed 2 nights and found excellent service, with a good quiet room overlooking rear gardens with TV and tea and coffee. Superb swimming pool, almost like a hot bath! Good selection of breakfast and the English Breakfast option was freshly cooked with ample servings. Breakfast room spotlessly clean with white tablecloths to match. Staff always friendly and helpful. Just over 10 minutes slight downhill and easy walk to the edge of town, with Cathedral another few minutes further on. Would certainly return and thouroughly recommend.
Excellent customer service
With the hotel only 10 minutes maximum walk from the centre of Canterbury, this is a great place to stay to investigate the area. Stayed here for 1 night at the end of March. The hotel is on a main road going into Canterbury. This made it very easy to locate initially. The road was very noisy but not inside the hotel or in its grounds. Inside, the hotel was very quiet and the only noise that we could hear in our room was from the tweeting of the birds outside. The rooms were comfortable and provided everything that you would... more
The Ebury is awesome!
From start to finish our stay at the Ebury was fantastic. The levels of service were particulalry exemplary. Some hotels we have stayed in have garn to boot, but the Ebury just keeps getting better and better...
Why We Love The Ebury Hotel
The Ebury Hotel is a intimate ,cosy Hotel .A magnificent original Victorian building with a host of period charm with a superb garden where there is one of the oldest and largest trees in England and is mentioned in the "Canterbury Tales". A warm welcome always with a superb restaurant offering food as good as any top class U,K restaurant, Situated within easy walking distance of the Historic town of Canterbury and also very central for touring all of Kent. An absolute must and fully recommended.
Where do these reviews come from?
This is NOT a quaint and charming hotel (B&B) as some prior reviews have claimed. This is an ordinary run-of-the-mill hotel in a very convenient location. There is no elevator so if your bags are heavy and your room is on the third floor--good luck. And don't count on the service staff to carry your bags up and down for you--you're on your own. The rooms are basic, not charming--and spiderwebs, moths and bees are everywhere since the windows are left open in the summer (no air conditioning). Having said all of that it is an acceptable place... more

Our hotel was built in the 1840s, initialy as two houses for two important Victorian gentlemen. Unfortunately at that time the technology for lifts and air conditioning was unavailable. We do not have a suitable place to install a lift, and due to our English climate, a/c is unneccessary (apart from one or two days in August). My staff are more than happy to carry guest's luggage, and all guests would be asked if they require assistance. Although we have yet to find a third floor in the building. There are times we wish we had the open spaces of America, and a blank canvas to design and build a hotel with every up to date facility, however our hands are tied by constraints dictated by the building, and the conservation area . Perhaps that is why the cathedral doesnt have a lift or a/c either.

Fawlty Towers
The Ebury Hotel should not be called a hotel. It is a merely a B+B with en-suite showers. The rooms are basic and the decor is hideous, think Hilda Ogden meets Alf Garnet. The service is appalling as was the breakfast. I spent a weekend at the Ebury and felt very short changed indeed. The floors a creaky so much so that one is woken by every person passing the room throughout the night. The laundry is located close to rooms and makes a monotonous low churning sound from 7am onwards Seriously places like this are why... more
Management response from aliCanterbury

Last weekend we had the misfortune of accepting a small group of Londoners visiting the provinces for a wedding for two nights. After their first nights stay my staff had to field complaints from the rest of the hotel regarding their behaviour; drunken singing, shouting, and running up and down the corridors until 2am. On Saturday morning, we pointed out that this was unacceptable, and if it occurred again they would be asked to leave. We were then informed that this sort of behaviour is to be expected at the weekend, well I am sorry but it's not, it's selfish, childish and thoughtless. With regards to the rest of the review I wont waste my time defending my hotel, as previous reviews speak for themselves. Finally I am rather glad the reviewer prefers a different hotel chain, I shall warn them in advance.

Hotel or B & B?
In the United States we would probably call the Ebury an Inn or B & B. Nevertheless, we were quite happy with our stay there. Of course, no elevator or air conditioning. There is a good car parking area, so you can leave your car and walk about 10 minutes to the historic central area of Canterbury, which is well worth a visit.
Great Hotel best place place I stayed in on my trip
My wife and I stayed at the Ebury in June 2005 for our Honeymoon trip to the uk. The hotel was excellent in all ways. It was located in very easy reach of the town centre just a quick walk to all the interesting sights and also very peaceful at night. We had room two the room was excellent the bed was just perfect and also king size, so that was a bonus, the hotel had bags of character not one of those terrible anonymous chains that you get!! The bathroom had a proper bath and shower and the room was very pretty and full of charm. The... more
OK, but not great.
We stayed in the Ebury for one night and found that the room, while pretty in appearance, was in need of an overhaul. The radiator was turned up to "boiling" and required that we leave open the rooms' windows to be able to breathe, much less sleep; we literally broke a sweat from the heat. As luck would have it, there was a large tree outside our window that provided the privacy we needed to sleep with the windows and curtains open. The floorboards were so squeaky that we were afraid to do much walking about in our room for fear of... more

All our radiators are fitted with thermostatic controls, if the radiator is too hot, a quick turn of the control, and bingo, no more heat. Yes I admit one or two of our rooms have squeaky floor boards, however the building is over 165 years old. Our beds are not rickety, they are new king size 5ft by 6ft 6" beds, not quite as big as the American king size, but perfectly adequate for the normal size of our guests. There are also one or two rooms where we have been unable to install a shower, these ensuite rooms have a full size bath and a handheld shower, again with perfectly good temperature control. (I was unaware that the word "en-suite" meant shower). Other than the above points we seemed to pass muster, and we always welcome constructive criticism.

Lovely
We stayed just one night here - our first night in England. We had read the reviews, which led us to make the reservation, but still weren't expecting such a nice room. The room we had was quite large, had a fireplace, large bathroom, and overlooked the lovely garden. Tea and biscuits were ready for us in the room, and the "full English breakfast" was great. In fact, it was only later in our stay that we realized that our breakfast here was much better than most! There was ample room for parking, but it was also a short walk to... more
