Not deserving of its AA Red Stars
Our free tijme is very limited so when we do have a break we tend to head for an upmarket hotel where we can expect a bit of luxury and delicious food. We chose Ballathie because it had the same AA grading as the fantastic Loch Torridon Hotel. We expected things to be on a par. Not so. On arriving in the lobby, the porter looked at us and took to his heels. This was a poor start in comparison with Torridon where on arrival on a very wet night we were met at our car in the carpark with an umbrella, our luggage taken to our room... more
Lovely hotel, high quality food, great service
We had our wedding here in November 2006, and the majority of our guests have since been in touch with us to comment on how lovely the hotel was, the high quality of the food and great service from friendly/helpful/efficient/courteous/professional staff. We couldn't agree more, and in particular with regard to the latter comment both on the day itself and throughout the entire planning process.
A beautiful hotel and excellent service
Having read the previous two reviews we were a little apprehensive about our visit to Ballathie. However, our experience of the hotel was excellent. We stayed in the Riverside rooms, suite 1,and the quality of room was lovely with scenic views of the river and main hotel. We have nothing but praise for the room and hotel. The food was excellent with an outstanding wine and whisky list! The staff were well informed and always helpful. Overall, and excellent stay and to be thoroughly recommended.
Don't stay in the Riverside rooms
My husband and I have visited the Ballathie on many occasions and it is the food more than anything else which has kept us going back (we haven't been this year due to a newborn baby). The dining room is lovely and in winter very warm and welcoming and we have always found the service to be excellent. In fact maybe we're just very fortunate but we tend to experience good service at most of the hotels we have visited. I remember a stay at the Ballathie when during afternoon tea served in one of the sitting rooms (with a lovely roaring... more
Horrible service and way overpriced
I booked the Ballathie house as a surprise for my parents while we were visiting the UK... After a long drive and a magnificent entrance ot the grounds, my mother and I went to check in and both ended up having the same reaction - "should we leave and go find another place?" Unfortuneatly this would be indicative of the service for the rest of the stay. We were paying a lot of money for the stay (5 days) and I am sorry but the food, rooms and service should not have been half the price. As a comparison, we stayed at the Devonshire Arms... more
Disappointing.....
Let me start by saying that this is mainly down to cost in as much as , in my opinion , we didn't get what we paid for. We are self employed and cannot get much time off so weekends away tend to be an bit more "concentrated" than normal. Having stayed in various top quality hotels around the world , we found Ballathie to be lacking in several areas but I shall try to give credit when it is due. Arriving at Ballathie is a wonderful experience. The long driveway through an avenue of mature copper beech trees and flowering... more
Wonderful
We stayed (sadly just for one night) for a special birthday treat. It is a beautiful hotel, and its grounds are great for a romantic stroll through the bluebells down to the River Tay (it was May). Appears to be popular with well-heeled anglers. Excellent service, wonderful ('superior') room with our bathroom having genuine deco original features and ending in a turret. A great place to relax and spoil yourself in calm and elegant surroundings, surrounded by the rich landscape of east Perthshire, and to speculate discreetly about your... more
