The Churchill Hotel

My wife and I stayed in the bridal suite which we found to be grubby with tired old furniture and desperate for refurbishment. The bathroom had not been replaced for approx 25 years and the sink was cracked and whilst there was a shower fitting to the bath there was no shower curtain. The hotel advertised the bridal suite as one of the finest rooms in York, if this is the finest I would not like to see the others. Stayed at this hotel in September and booked a room in the new extension. The room was a suite which basically meant it had a sofa in it. These rooms were just finished being renovated are were quite comfortable. The few days we stayed there was a conference and felt that the paying guests were "sidlined" with all the preparation for the conference. The last night the guests had to take their evening meal in the dining room at the back which didn't have any windows and had no ambiance or atmosphere. We were very disappointed with this... more

My family and I stayed at this hotel over Christmas a few years back and had a really nice time. The hotel has a special Christmas program with 3 meals a day and entertainment provided. I have never eaten so much in my life! We stayed the room at the basement of the hotel, which sounds strange but it was really quite nice (to be honest, I am not sure if they normally rent this room out). We were upgraded to the honeymoon suite. It was an enormous room but a little tired in terms of decor. Staff tried hard and it was quiet and comfortable.

We've recently returned from a short break to York, staying at The Churchill. Firstly on York, we loved it, there was so much to see and do, and the history of the place is so interesting. The Churchill Hotel was the perfect place to stay. Within a short walk of the town and free parking the hotel is perfectly situated. Just returned from a relaxing mid week break in York at the elegant Churchill Hotel, a short work from the city gates. We were able to book the Bridal Suite at an extremely reasonable rate, compared to prices charged by the average local B&B in the area. We booked the Churchill hotel as we liked the idea of sole use for our wedding. We were very disconcerted when I read some of the reviews on this website, although our experience could not have been better. The wedding organiser took all the worry out of the finer details and was happy to accommodate all our requests. The hotel was refurbished after we booked and our guests had excellent comments about their stay. Arrived at the Churchill friday afternoon room not ready. Shower not working Breakfast very poor one rasher of bacon one sausage 2 mushrooms i egg need i say more.Bar staff mainly students but what excellent staff they made up for the shortcomings of the hotel and made our stay enjoyable well done to you all.

Arrived at this hotel to find that they were undertaking renovations of the bar area, which was a bit disconcerting, especially as the furniture was all piled into the other bar. Room comfortable, although the decor was a little shabby, I felt the shabby chic look fitted the general atmosphere. We didn't eat in the hotel, other than breakfast which was excellent. Booked on a cheapo deal as it was so early in the season. Good location with the major sights only a short distance away. In common with some other reviews I'd agree the room was a bit cobwebby but there again so is my house so not that bothered - it was pretty clean where a duster could reach!
