Fabulous
A fabulous hotel, with excellent and friendly staff. We had a superior room, that was very spacious. We were near the road but didn't really notice any traffic noise. The food in the Bistro was excellent and we would definitely come back here.
Fantastic Location, great value lovely staff
Just returned having spent 3 nights in the Stables Lodge, while doing some serious walking in the area. If you know the area, you won't need telling how lovely Betws y Coed is. If you don't, well words can't do the area justice. We have stayed in the Hotel previously, but this time opted to stay in a family room in the Stables Lodge, just to the rear of the property. The room itself was fine, bright an airy with a large double bed, plus a folding double sofa bed. The bathroom was great, with a reasonable sized bath cum shower. <br... more
Never Again...
I booked a single occupancy room for 3 nights and checked out after the first night because it was so poor. The room was tiny and was just generally dated and a bit shabby in my opinion. I wanted to check out within 2 hours but was informed by the management that they would have to charge me 50% of the room rate as I had creased the linen on the bed by sitting on it. I think I had probably used the bathroom too. Clearly an outrageous act. I reluctantly stayed for a night. Generally I found the staff that dealt with me unhelpful all round.... more
Management response from RoyalOakHotel

As family business and independent Hotel operator for over 30 years, we are of course sorry that we do not seem to have met this guest's expectations of us during your recent visit. Customer satisfaction has been the key to our success over decades of trading and is at centre of all that we do here at the Royal Oak. I have personally investigated this matter speaking to Brian, Food and Beverage Manager, as well as Leila, Senior Receptionist, concerning his stay. We offered alternative superior accommodation that would normally cost £120 per night albeit non-smoking at no extra charge being worth £55.00 per night as we do not let these rooms on a single rate unless a guest is prepared to pay the normal double occupancy rate. My staff were right to advise of the non-smoking policy in these rooms in order to avoid complaints from future guests wanting no smoking rooms as is the increasing trend. Single rooms are priced at £65.00 per night whereas double rooms start from £80 per night, both bed and breakfast; we consider the price difference adequately takes account of the size difference. So far as the charge levied, this took in to account that the bathroom required a full service to include replenishment of toiletries, towels and change of linen as well as hoovering – everything we would normally do had someone stayed. Accordingly, the proposed charge was more than reasonable given that full and proper compensation as well as complimentary upgrade worth £55.00 per night was offered but declined. We would add that the guest was so keen to post their report that it was on display at this sight BEFORE we have even received it, never mind investigate or reply to it. We welcome all constructive feedback as well as consumer choice and opinion. However, it is disappointing when you go out of your way and even offer well over the odds compensation that it seems to count for very little - you decide.

Superb
Excellent all round package. Staff courteous, efficient and pleasant! Food in the Hotel restaurant, and the grill was wonderful; from the gourmet A La Carte selection and the Saturday night grill to the sumptuous breakfasts. All the staff in the dining areas were amazing. Room was fine, a little noise from the extractor fan from the kitchen but not a real problem, although the view of the back service area could have been screened maybe? Only comment, (not a complaint though) could do with some slightly more comfortable sofa... more
Disappointing
This hotel is a bit grotty really. It's above a busy bar, so you don't really get the peace and quiet you might expect in a place like this. The food's OK, but nothing special. We paid the best part of £100 for our night here, and probably wouldn't do again. Our room was in need of a re-furb, and we left feeling a bit ripped off. Better luck next time?
OK but a bit over-priced
My husband and I had a night here in early August 2005. We paid £50 each for a superior room (all they had) compared with £40 each for the standard double. Our room (which was at the front) and bathroom were fine, although the decor was a bit dated, but our main complaint was the noise from the A5 which is a busy road. If it had been hot and we had wanted to keep the window open it would have been unbearable. That said, our evening meal in the grill was lovely and the service excellent. All-in-all a reasonable stay, but pricey for what you... more
Needs some Help
My husband and I have just returned from staying 2 days at this hotel that we chose because of the high reccommendations from Trip Advisor. Unfortunately, it did not live up to the expectations registered by the other guests. The standard room that we stayed in (£80 and small) was in much need of modernisation unless you like woodchip walls and unmatching bedding and curtains. The bathroom was modern though and a complete conrast to the old fashioned room. The hotel overall was okay but we found that £80 was overpriced and... more
Lovely Hotel
We stayed here for two nights in early March 2005 and were very very pleased. The receptionist showed us two rooms and we chose an executive room above the bar. We didn't hear a peep from the bar downstairs, even though we slept with the windows open. The room was spotless and the brand new bathroom was fabulous. They have just renovated the restaurant/Grill Room next door and the cooked breakfast is fantastic. The evening menu is even better and the food is just great - the staff cannot do enough for you and make this hotel really... more
Always My First Choice
i have stayed here 3 times - all brilliant and its worth having an evening meal in the restraurant - even better if you can get it included in a deal. They also have family lodges which are a little cheaper and ive stayed here too - and these are well worth the money. gets very very busy in the summer and worth considering asking for rooms away from the bar as people sitting outside can be a little noisy! Dont let my last comment put you off - its still my first choice when i stay in Betws-y-Coed.
just enjoy
We stayed there last September and at first when we were quoted £45 each for b&b we were not sure. However when the receptionist informed us that dinner was only £15 instead of £25 for non residents we decided to stay. The room was great, bathroom a treat, view was not one which memories are made of, but overall up to scratch. The dinner we had that night was excellent value. We would have been happy as a non resident, the service was good, food was so good. The Stables bar next door was lively without you having... more
a True gem in the heart of wales
Superb accommodation, the most courteous staff you could find, from the reception desk booking the reservation, to the brilliant team in the Grill room, where the menu is a delight. Breakfast is mighy fine too.
