Terrible Hotel Greenside in Edinburgh
We stayed at this hotel during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2007. The price was exorbitant; and the hotel was absolutely disgusting! Wallpaper was peeling off the walls, the decor was old and carpet filthy. Bedspreads were ancient. TV aerial didn't work and thus only picked up 2 stations. The staff were slow and when we checked out a couple of minutes late, they made a point to let me know that I was "lucky" that I wouldn't get charged for a late check out. Arrogant and rude. Did not try the breakfast as it was only served... more
The worst hotel that I met in my life
The only merit of this old and decadent hotel is the location, closed New Town. Four floors without elevator, steep stairs,no help for luggages to go upstairs, uncrible durty, poor breakfast, unkidness staff!! three stars hotel but the real value is less than one for a price of 150 £ day for a double room
Very distressing
Had we read a review of this hotel before we reserved for a night, we never would have stayed there. There were holes in the walls, wallpaper dingy and peeling, no battery in the remote, plastic cups dented and unusable, and the 1 staff person not helpful. The view was not at all nice, and we had to carry our bags up 4 flights of stairs. It was 4 times the price it should have been. It's sign has 3 stars awarded by the Scottish Tourist Board - perhaps left over from 50 years ago?? We were totally appalled.
Do not recommend! Yuck.
The Greenside is plain and simple, a dive. We stayed there one night, and it should have been half the price for what it was! First off, it is dirty, dingy, and barely feels safe. We stayed downstairs in room 1, and on the way to our room, we noticed one room's door was not closed, and the door was dented in on top with the impression of what appeared to be someone's head. Ok, that's not the best sight, and regardless of how it got there, I can tell you that if I was management, that would be a door I replaced immediately! In our... more
Great value
I stayed two nights at the Greenside Hotel in Edinburgh in May 2007 and had a great experience there -- a great value for the budget traveler. It's in the New Town area of Edinburgh, which is worth visiting anyway, and although it's a bit of a walk to the Royal Mile -- about 10 minutes to the Holyrood Palace end, and many of the tourist attractions are closer to the Edinburgh Castle end -- it's well worth the walk for the savings. Breakfast was great (and free -- another hotel I stayed in charged for anything but continental... more
Greenside Hotel, Edinburgh. Recommendation
I’m sorry to read the negative reviews posted by other Tripadvisor members, and hope it doesn’t mean that the Greenside has declined. Certainly, those members’ experiences don’t match the very positive ones we had during our stay. My family and I stayed at the Greenside Hotel in the Spring of ‘04, and found it to be very pleasant budget accommodation. (Rates from 25 to 65 GBP from the 2006 website). It offered excellent value. Our rooms were large: the top-floor one I shared with my brother had two double beds; my... more
Not reccommended unless your broke and not bothered about perfection!
I was surprised at how worn down the hotel was. On the occasion that I called to check my reservation the woman answered my questions before i could ask them. I was a beautiful building, it was just a shame our room wasn't very clean, with dust hanging from the ceiling and a big hole in the wall behind the sink. They could do so much if they invested some money in redecorating, not quite refurbishing therefore i'm sure they could find the budget. Breakfast was nice and the staff were friendly. Overall if you want a cheap place to stay... more
Stay away!
What Dump, dont stay here, room we stayed in is in need of refurbishment, A very tired looking hotel, breakfast very poor You have been warned
A Tired and Worn out Hotel
The hotel sent a brochure out showing various points which we feel were taken from their sister hotel on the same road. No food offered except for breakfast which was a greasy affair and overcooked. Rooms were tired and well in need of decoration, owner charged for 1 nights stay which we had cancelled more than 24hrs in advance of us checking out, promised a refund if room was resold,it was resold and no refund given. It was more like a YMCA than a 3 star Hotel.
Quality not worth its price
We read most of the review claiming the rooms will be large but we were shocked to find a tight space room at the highest floor. There was hardly any space to walk around n we had to squeeze our way to the balcony to enjoy its view, though nice but not worth the price we paid for (double room). The manager also does not welcome our comments very much. Bathroom is nice and clean but the water heater makes too much noise when it's turned on. Cups were not clean when we first arrived. Blankets not thick enough for the cold weather. <br... more
