Best location in town!
Our stay at this Pousada left us with an impression that the hotel was a good four star, bordering on five star, hotel. The best feature of the hotel is it's location - directly across the street from the Roman ruins of Diana's Temple. Situated at the highest point in the town, the hotel offers the best views of the surrounding area. While other reviewers have noted that the rooms are particularly small, we stayed on the 3rd floor of the hotel and had a lovely spacious room with windows looking out towards the Cathederal bell tower. excellent breakfast & location, plain room
We greatly enjoyed our stay in this hotel. The 'deluxe' room was plain, but the public areas were handsome, and it is right next to some of Evora's major sights. Breakfast was generous and varied. Upon e-mail request they reduced the published rate for our mid-March visit so we got a deluxe double room for the senior rate of 107 euros with breakfast. Evora is a rather boring city, though. Food options are poor and the streets are not lively even though it is supposedly a college town.
Great location in small town
This hotel has great location advantage, literally next door to Roman Coliseum ruins. This former monastery has held onto most of its former structure and décor. The spacious hall ways is filled with antique furniture and there’s a beautiful marble staircase. However the rooms were not decorated with the consistent theme. Our small room had a shabby chic, country charm feel. The furniture was likely from Ikea. It would’ve been more interesting if the furniture was gothic. Mornings can be loud when other guests check out and drag... more
A memorable, special place
We loved this place. Evora is special and this hotel fits right in. It's a masterful job of renovation. Yes the rooms (cells) are small but the ceilings are high and the bathrooms nice so somehow it didn't feel claustrophobic. The pool is small but beautiful.Tthe restaurant is gorgeous, tasty and suprisingly reasonable. Evora is worth seeing and this is without question the place to stay there.
Poor Pousada
Evora Pousada was a disappointment in April 2006 - poor service, grossly expensive bar which then overcharged, and little breakfast choice, plus an unmade room on arrival, marred a nice setting.
A Must in Portugal!
My husband and I stayed here in May 2005 and we absolutely loved it! The pousada is directly in the center of the beautiful town of Evora (a MUST see town if you are going to Portugal - a world heritage site). The rooms are cozy (small but very authentic as they are the cells that the monks used to sleep in) and beautiful - marble bathrooms, antique wood furniture and even a flat screen TV (the monks didn't have it this good)! The hotel itself is stunning - gorgeous corridors, beautiful and refreshing pool (a great break from sight-seeing)... more
Disappointing small rooms
We decided to 'splash out' on Evora Pousada but our room was VERY small - only 12 sq m or so. It was not in brilliant condition either - it all needed a coat of paint. We booked in for 6 days and tried to pull out after 1 - but they would not let us, so we left after 4 for the Hotel Riviera which was cheaper and better. (But the Pousada breakfast was excellent - including a self-service champagne!)
a highlight of Evora
We stayed at the pousada dos loios in October 2003 - it was a highlight of our visit to Evora. Right out the front door you are looking at the ruins of the roman temple, and are just around the corner from the cathedral and the main shopping street taking you to the square. The pousada is truly lovely, with attention to every detail. The staff was friendly and helpful. While the regular rooms are tiny they are well appointed and lovely, and really there is plenty of space to relax in the public areas, which are furnished beautifully and are... more
Comfortable and cozy
We stayed a few days in Pousada dos Loios last Fall with our Grand Circle travel tour group and found the former convent well appointed with lovely furnishings and to be one of the highlights of Evora, the square in easy walking distance that was both charming and approachable. Our room had old world plush velvet drapes with beautiful Portugese needlepoint beside-the-bed rugs. And the parlor was very condusive to chatting with fellow travellers by the open fireside in comfy overstuffed conversation oriented seating and outdoor terrace... more
A disappointment
My wife and I spent a wonderful ten day vacation in Portugal in March 2003. We found the country beautiful and the people reserved, but charming and helpful. Based on what we had read we insisted to the travel agent that we stay at the Pousada dos Loios. It was the one disappointment of our trip. The room was tiny, not unexpected in a former monastery cell, but the real disappointment was the service in the restaurant. While the quality food was good, the head waiter was sullen and the waitresses appeared non professional. Considering the... more
