The George in Rye

I was taken here for my 40th birthday on 23rd by my boyfriend and all I can say is it is the perfect place to be taken for a special occasion. Everything about this place is lovely. It's very trendy and boutiquey but at the same time you feel relaxed and spoilt. It's indulgent but not precious. What an amazing find in the middle of beautiful Rye. Decor and fantastic rooms straight from Elle decoration. Rm 12 is great. We ate at the restaurant every night as part of a 2 night deal - great food - particularly the cabbage starter with paprika (seriously). Only complaint was the music - eating breakfast to Hard Rock and evening drinks to 80s rave music ruined the ambience a lot,and really took the edge of this being a modern stylish hotel. Heaven in a hotel. Stayed for just one night & although over my usual budget, both myself & partner agreed definately worth the splurge! Beautifully co-ordinated decor, everything about the room was perfect, especially the comfy bed & roll-top bath overlooking Ryes old tiled roofs. I booked four rooms for New Year 2006 in October on their New Year package. This was withdrawn at the end of November to standard room tariffs, as the take up for the package was limited. I had the option to book New Years dinner separately. Thank the lord I did not. I knew from when I started making the reservations we would encounter problems. I had high expectations of the George in Rye having read several national newspaper reviews and peoples comments on this site and I have to agree that the ambience, the stylish decoration of the rooms and the location of the hotel lived up to these expectations. Had a one night romantic break at the George last week and we thought that the place was great. Stayed in room 16 on the top floor - a great view above the rooftops to the floodlit church and a really comfortable double bed. The room was on a slight slant, so watch out when you put things on the bedside table. but rather than an annoyance it was quaint. Have to agree with the previous reviewer. The rooms are good and the staff are helpful and friendly - though it's obvious that they are under-staffed. I also noticed that when the reception was unmanned, and the phones were ringing off the hook, the manager just sat there reading his paper. The food in general, and especially at dinner, was pretty poor and they charged top whack prices for it. Other diners were also unhappy. We stayed at the George last Sunday and were really impressed. The room, which seemed initially quite small when we first entered, quickly grew on me - a nice touch to have the retro-styled digital radio playing classic fm in the background - other nice touches included a personalised greeting letter addressed to my partner ("and guest" to give me my official title :) ), lovely lambswool scented heart-shaped cushions on the bed and a great rainfall-style shower over the bath with Aveda products.
