new and improved
from melenhorgan
I have been to The Ship a few times now, normally for our work's Christmas party and it was a bit tired and nothing special to say the least. This year however I got a very welcome surprise! The food was excellent, specialising in locally sourced food and even some organic stuff! On further investigation I found out that it had changed hands which explained everything. The whole experience was just much better all round, the service was faultless and I even asked for a sneaky peek at a refurbished bedroom and it was really impressive (I...

Nice Hotel - Shocking Service
from Nickandsherree
I booked a weekend away as a treat for my girlfriend as she went to Chichester Uni 16 years ago. The hotel itself was very nice, perhaps just needs touching up a bit in places. The only problem was the service. Upon booking in the receptionist didnt ask if we would be booking dinner that evening (this has never happened to me before) so i thought the restaurant must be fully booked - it wasnt, it was half empty. Before going out in the evening we went to the bar for a drink - i stood and waited like a lemon for 5 minutes before my...

Better than expected
from A TripAdvisor Member
The Ship changed hands in May 2006 so all previous reports need to be revised. The staff are now very good, most helpful and cheerful. The Brasserie food is good with a wide menu and service is prompt. For an hotel in the middle of a busy town one might expect some traffic noise and as the building comes from the 18th century it has a lot of character but no airconditioning so double glazing would be of no advantqge. Many hotels now have semi self-service breakfast facilities and I see little wrong with this.
I liked this more than your other reviewers!

Bad start: when I arrived they'd no record of my reservation. They recovered quickly, however, and the helpful girl at reception found me a super room - and at the price we'd agreed in my e-mails: £79 (including full breakfast) for a double room for single occupancy. My third-floor room (36) had been recently refurbished and had a wonderful view of the cathedral. I was very comfortable. The bathroom was big and clean - though the water pressure for the shower was a bit weedy. The restaurant was fine with some quite interesting things...

Moody Breakfast Service
from A TripAdvisor Member
Rooms were small but clean and tidy. Same could be said for the reception. I think this place is trying to move on from being a hotel into being a bar and restaurent. Well, if they have any hope of success they are going to have to overall their staff training methods. Breakfast was well....a dogs breakfast. The food itself was average, but the service was rude, random and I would say ruined our stay at the ship. Good location but not worth the money.
The Ship Hotel, they should have called it Old Ship
from longhaultraveller2
They should have called it the OLD ship cause its Old indeed. Our double room, Number 6, was on the small side for £99 + Breakfast Cracks in the ceiling, chips around the doors, paints peeling. There was 2 fag burns on the duvet cover! But worse upon worse was the bed head-rest, those greasy dark patches from to many heads over the years. Downstairs Brookes restaurant looks really swank and posh but servers basic stuff, like fish n chips and burgers, Breakfast is served in here as well and its self serve. Our room...

Disappointing for the price
from A TripAdvisor Member
Having been highly recommended and considering the price I was extremely disappointed with the room and unhelpfulness of the staff. I had a single room at £79. It had been a particularly hot day and the room was extremely warm having had the windows closed and the curtains wide open facing the sun. First problem - no air conditioning, not even a fan. Had to open windows close curtains and leave room to cool down. Staff not sympathetic. Trying to get any info from reception was like pulling teeth. e.g dining arrangements, wake...

A gem......
from roberph
I just stayed 2 nights at this hotel located on the main street in Chichester. Small (62 rooms) historic hotel well situated - free parking, indivudually themed non smoking rooms (great!), excellent staff. There is also a bistro in the hotel where breakfast is served. Not the greatest breakfast (no ham, cheese, croissants etc??) but not bad and included in the rate. Overall a very good hotel.
enjoyable stay
from A TripAdvisor Member
very enjoyable nights stay. room had dual aspect views of the Cathedral & Prory. reasonable size with large bathroom. Problem with radiator in room sorted promptly. Breakfast self-service and all staff polite & efficient. One thing though, if the management are reading, you could do with some door dampeners on the outer lift door on the 3rd floor. (door banging everytime someone gets out of the lift late at night, not conjusive to nodding off !) overall an enjoyable stay, in a beautiful city.
could do better
from A TripAdvisor Member
The Ship Hotel is in a perfect location, if only it was a bit easier to find. Found myself driving round and round. I knew where I wanted to go, but couldn't get there. My first impression wasn't good. I had to wait at the reception desk for over 13 minutes, whislt the two receptionist were on the telephone. One taking a booking and the other chatting to what seemed her mangager, Richard, about why the cost of the kitchen staff was so high. Apparently it was because they stayed until very late cleaning! Just a ' Sorry to keep you waiting' or...
